This had been on my TBR since 2009 but I am glad I finally picked it up. It‘s a great read, set in Canada in a historical setting of empty landscapes, trackers, hunters, etc. A man is murdered and a boy is missing. What follows is a journey across the winter landscape with lots of pov‘s and storylines.

I started King of Ashes for #CampLitsy25 and have read a bit in I See You‘ve Called in Dead too. The tagged book is an oldie, I can‘t even remember why I bought it. It‘s my #Roll100 read for August.

In 1867 in Northern Canada a fur trapper is found murdered in his cabin. Dove River is a small town the fur trade flows through, and we get to know many of the residents, including Mrs Ross, whose 17 year old son goes missing the night of the murder.

I liked this, but it was much more slow moving than expected. There are a lot of characters with questionable motives, and some side plots that could have been left out. But good.

I read this book years ago and still think of it frequently. It might have been one of the first novels that made me feel physically cold as I read it. Very well written with suspense, complex characters, and beautiful, if chilling, setting! A favorite of mine!!

Good descriptions and characters but the plot was one dimensional for me.

This was really good. Set in a remote Canadian settlement in 1867, a man is brutally murdered! It‘s dark and bleak and full of atmosphere. Just what I needed right now to be honest. Highly recommend. 👍

Undecided.
I quite liked the writing. Description. Landscape.
But really couldn't keep track of the characters or feel much toward them.
I was looking forward to reading this as I'd read good reviews, plus the fact that the author hasn't even visited the area but had researched thoroughly.

I have to confess I've struggled to engage with this. It's only in the second half that I've found it more appealing. But now I'm struggling towards the last 50 pages.

Book club pick...
I'm not getting into it as much as I'd thought. Finding it a challenge to keep up with characters. Hopefully it'll flow more...

I read this book last December in Windhoek and felt drawn to rereading it. There are so many beautiful passages that resonate with me.

I found it fascinating when I learnt the author researched the whole thing without leaving London. It shows the power of imagination in conjuring up worlds of which one has no experience. This shouldn‘t, I suppose, be a surprise. I don‘t imagine JK Rowling has ever visited a school for wizards, Tolkien never ventured very far from Oxford, & CS Lewis had perfectly normal wardrobes, but it‘s still impressive nonetheless!

Oh my goodness, I loved this book SO MUCH! If you read the description and think it sounds dry and like work - it really isn't! The writing is exquisite and fairly soon you're completely engrossed in the mystery and can barely stop reading. Penney doesn't unravel all her characters' complexities and I rather like that. Just imagine: she wrote this book without visiting Canada because of suffering from agoraphobia! Serious writing talent.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I'm really enjoying this rather slow, atmospheric book.

“The sickness of long-thinking” is an apt phrase for the grief of loss in knowing what cannot be.

Thoroughly enjoyed this tale of wilderness, discovery, and mystery.

I've been trying to sit down with this book all day, but every time I get started there's something else to do!

The book is set in Canada in the 1860s. It starts with the discovery of the murder of a trapper, and then follows various events that occur as the murderer is sought. As Stef Penney suffered from agoraphobia at the time of writing this novel, she did all the research in the libraries of London and never visited Canada. It still makes for an interesting read.
