League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Omnibus Edition | Alan Moore
19 posts | 18 read | 8 to read
At last, Volumes 1 and 2 of Alan Moore's LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN are collected in a single, hardcover edition! As the twentieth century approaches, there is a need for a new kind of champion - adventurers not bound by the chaste order that characterizes the stagnant Victorian Era. The enigmatic Campion Bond of British Intelligence has begun a recruiting mission, collecting a menagerie of individuals who can be of value to his superiors due to...activities that have forced them beyond the pale. But as Allan Quatermain, Mina Murray, Captain Nemo, Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde, and Hawley Griffin, the Invisible Man discover, British Intelligence has plans for them that go far beyond mere spying. And if they survive their first test against the devil doctor of Limehouse, they'll have to battle an even stranger menace from the stars!

For the #LittensDressedInBlood prompt “Monster Mash”, I chose The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novels. I haven‘t read all of them and sadly I don‘t own any, though I will definitely be rectifying that soon! I love the idea of mashing up the storylines of several literary characters into what is essentially an anti-hero group of badassery. 😅

Wow, that was so terrible. The first volume‘s story was okay. I think it‘s safe to say now I‘m not a fan of Alan Moore and Watchmen was a fluke. What‘s so disappointing, though, is that I love the CONCEPT. I mean, all of these great 19th century fictional characters teaming up, led by the one woman on the team? So fun. Like V for Vendetta, I have to say I enjoyed the movie interpretation much more than the original graphic novel.

MaleficentBookDragon @Amandajoy 😅 it was random for me as well. I was just browsing Prime and it popped up as a “Watch again?” 3y
Avanders I mean, I don‘t *love* it, but I don‘t mind it either! 😁 Plus I do love one of the worst-rated movies out there (Jupiter Ascending) 3y
LibrarianRyan I like this movie. It was bad for the books it‘s based off of but overall a fun watch. 3y

I loved it! I enjoyed the pacing, dialogue and treatment of the characters, which actually took them beyond their original setting in a really fun way. Managed to talk about some occasionally jarring and mature themes as well. It was not just a cut and paste of the classics at all, but a believable (in context) interaction of ordinary people struggling against extraordinary circumstances, their own or their environment‘s. I strongly recommend.

CatLass007 Thanks for the tag. This looks fabulous! 6y
Ross I strongly suggest the Omnibus edition if you can find it! 6y

Sampled this YEARS ago, never got my hands on a full edition. Chapters/issues bookended by period-appropriate (1898) intro/outros. It takes a “what if were true” stance regarding many of the classics (Jekyl & Hyde, Invisible Man, 20,000 leagues, etc.) and then posit that the British government begins recruiting them for a special team of problem-solvers. So much fun. The lit-nerd in me loves looking for the references and clues. Plus: Alan Moore!

Starting this omnibus which contains Vols I & II! Moore's imaginative writing and O'Neil's detailed artwork combine to make these stories featuring 19th c. literary figures on a Steampunk adventure come to life. Not always pretty, sometimes downright lurid and/or prurient, they are nonetheless fun and clever.

(Pictured: Detail from cover which shows Quartermain, Jekyll/Hyde, Nemo, the Invisible Man, and the indomitable & enigmatic Miss Murray)
