Will Dillard is sent to a summer camp to “cure” his homosexuality. After spending years blocking out those memories he is suddenly forced to confront his past when a fellow camper makes a slasher film based loosely on their time at the camp. I loved this quirky debut novel and am excited that I got to meet Nick White (who was so funny btw!) at the Ohioana Book Festival and will definitely read more from him 😄

So far I'm really enjoying this book I picked up at the Ohioana Book Festival in April! The author was super friendly and fun in person, as evidenced by the promotional drink recipe for his book of short stories 🍹
panVery disappointing. I‘m not sure if it‘s because the author was a first-time novelist or because he was trying to do too much, but the story was all over the place. The characters were not appealing, and in spite of the compelling subject, it was a slog. Finally—and this is going to seem incredibly silly—the main character‘s tendency to get or to be put into situations where his hygiene is compromised was really gross. ⭐️⭐️
After a exploitative slasher movie comes out based on that summer William Dillard went to a “pray the gay away” camp, years later, William will have to reconcile who he became with who his reverend father, who sent him to that camp, wanted him to be. #FierceFeb #PapaDontPreach

pickWilliam "Rooster" Dillard just found out that the new movie, Proud Flesh, an exploitation slasher film, is loosely based off events that happened in his youth. When Will was 15, his father, a pastor, sent him to an aversion, "pray the gay away," summer camp. Tragedy strikes during that summer with long reaching consequences. The prose ain't pretty, but it's a good story, dark and worthy of being read. It's a pick!!!

so-soProbably more like between so-so and pick, honestly. I love what this book is doing and the premise (a young man recounts his time as a teenager at a religious camp designed to "cure" homosexuality and the abuse and tragedy he and other campers endured there) is compelling, but I thought the whole thing didn't *quite* achieve the fullness and sharpness I would have liked. Very glad I read it, and I do recommend.
Giving myself today and the weekend off, and I'm going to read read read! Starting here. Am about 80 pages in and it's great so far.

pickY'all. This book is AMAZING. The writing is like a river, and it gently takes you through some hard and painful scenes. Just amazing.
This one is going to be tough subject matter but so far it's definitely well written.
pickThis was a difficult read. I didn't care for Will as a character, until the end. But the rational part of me knows that we all react to trauma differently, and all of our experiences as queer folk are different. In the end, the truth felt small compared to the build up of secrets and memories, but I was, if not pleased, then at least mostly satisfied. This is a relevant queer story about an underrepresented part of the community.
Okay, here we go! So far everything we know is told through the lens of an adult looking back at trauma; everything has been filtered through that lens. I have a feeling this next chapter is going to be brutal.
I've noticed this dichotomy before; in terms of the struggle, I'm still so young. I came out in the early-mid 90's, and even just a few years makes such a difference. By the time I was a junior in college in 97-98, first years we're coming to campus having been out and active in queer communities for years already. But even my own experiences pale compared to my partner, who came out in the feminist movement of the '70's.
