Oathbringer
Oathbringer | Brandon Sanderson
The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Words of Radiance, from epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson at the top of his game. In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance. Dalinar Kholins Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified. Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinars blood-soaked past and stand togetherand unless Dalinar himself can confront that pasteven the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization. A lot of setup in the beginning, including some great character development for Shallan. Her growth and evolution really made her an unexpected favorite of mine. But then BAM! So. Much. Battle. Lots of excitement followed up with some nice ending closure.

On a side note, someone at GraphicAudio needs to be told that French kissing sound effects are totally unnecessary.

Zoes_Human @RaeLovesToRead I KNOW! GraphicAudio is know for their full movie-quality sound, which is, by and large, wonderful. But that was just a step too far. 7mo

Yes, that is Rhythm of War, not Oathbringer... I read Oathbringer on my Kindle. It was pretty good, but also ever so sprawling. I found myself losing track of everything that was going on.

Despite it feeling rather chaotic and frantic, there were elements that I really enjoyed and I'll be moving straight on to Rhythm of War.

Stormlight Archive is a deeply inventive fantasy series, with a rich lore and lots of character.

⭐⭐⭐ for this instalment

DaveGreen7777 Sooooooo, I‘m guessing you didn‘t agree with me that Oathbringer was the best in the series, then?? 🙈 1y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Oh Dave, I'm sorry! Maybe don't read my Goodreads review... hehe 😂😳 On the whole, I'm enjoying the series, but I'm not quite as smitten as some of my friends and I'm a bit worried that an angry mob might be forming, haha. I don't know if I've been spoiled by Robin Hobb & GRRM or if I'm just getting increasingly hard to please 😅😅 1y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead HA HA! Don‘t worry, I promise not to take it personally that you‘re not enjoying the series quite as much as me! 😁 1y

Rae vs. Stormlight Archive continues.

With each of these books I've been tempted to give up at the halfway point, but Sanderson has managed to dazzle me in the second half... I'm hoping it will be the same with Oathbringer.

There's just so much lore and so many points of view! Sometimes it feels like starting over and over again. I struggle to remember all the different minor characters / spren / locations / backstory that get thrown my way.

But on the bright side, I finally finished my reread of the first two books of the Stormlight Archive and started reading Oathbringer! I'm loving it so far, and looking forward to reading Rhythm of War next.

I'm not sure how to feel after this chapter.

Am I supposed to intensely dislike young Dalinar and his allies? Is Sanderson going for a Tigana-style "are we the bad guys?" approach? Or are we supposed to be on side?

I assume all will become clear as I read on...

The third book in the series continues each of our favorite characters‘ storylines. There‘s a great twist on the voidbringer theme. Some people complain about the length, but I think of these books as something you just sink into and enjoy as they meander.

I am thoroughly enjoying The Stormlight Archives. Part 2 of Oathbringer was epic and I think I preferred this over Part1.

There is a lot of action in this one, particularly towards the last third of the book and more is revealed about the nature of the world and the Voidbringers.

• 2nd impulse: Wonder: “What are they doing, why is this the 2nd book of the “Alcatraz”-series, where is the 1st (and the 3rd) one?

• 3rd impulse: Cry bitterly because the German edition of “Oathbringer” consists of 2 books: „Der Ruf der Klingen” and „Die Splitter der Macht“. So, again, where‘s the other one❓😠

This book was simply fantastic from beginning to end. I love how the relationships and characters from the first two books are fleshed out further and though it didn‘t take up much space, Teft‘s arc in particular gave me a serious case of the feels. Among other things, Oathbringer explores divinity, mental health, politics, and the nature of hypocrisy, all with an apocalyptic backdrop infusing tension into the entire story.

“What if all my Stormlight characters had existential crises?” Sanderson asked himself. Then he wrote OATHBRINGER.

It‘s damned good, y‘all. Despite its length, Sanderson keeps everything moving at a nice clip, with tons of character development, plot progression, and answers to some of the series‘ biggest questions. I loved it slightly less than WoR but easily as much as TWoK.

...with one reservation, as discussed in a spoiler tag below.

xicanti Near the end, most of the human characters are horrified to learn their ancestors colonized Roshar and they themselves have perpetuated an horrific cycle. I hope this means the wider series is about reconciliation—and, to be blunt, I‘m leery of fictionalized reconciliation stories penned by settlers. I hope Sanderson has done a hell of a lot of research into how actual Indigenous Nations and settler populations move forward in these situations.

Wow. Just wow. What a fantastic book. I cannot describe how much I enjoyed the character development in this installment. Dalinar's resolve and coming to terms was incredible, Shallan and Kaladin's struggles, and the narratives that delved into the deeper implications of what was going on. Truly my favourite series right now. I can't wait until the next book comes out.

This week‘s #bookreport:

I finished OATHBRINGER! Two days ahead of schedule, even, since the audio edition helped me reclaim a LOT of reading time across three busy days.

THE SAGAS OF ICELANDERS got short shrift, but I‘m about 15 chapters further in.

I read two vols of HONEY HUNT. It‘s taken a far less interesting turn, alas.

CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS feels very, very long.

The audio of THE RAVEN KING has only just become available to me.

Breakfast was OATHBRINGER and a banana-mango smoothie. I‘m past the 80% point now, so there‘s a good chance I‘ll finish the book tomorrow!

Then begins the long wait for Book Four to come out AND go on sale for $4.99 or less in electronic form, because I ain‘t made of money and there‘s no way I could read this series in hardcover. My hands couldn‘t take it.

MoonWitch94 See...I cannot spend more than $4.99 on an eBook because that‘s absurd when you can‘t hold it physically in your hands. It seems crazy to me. BUT, I have been known to splurge on a hardcover now & again 🤦🏻‍♀️ However, I will admit that if it‘s a series, I very rarely do that because it‘s way too expensive. 3y
xicanti @MoonWitch94 99% of the time, I borrow hardcovers from the library instead of buying them since they‘re expensive and I know I‘ll probably never reread the book in that format. When the title‘s as thick as all the ones in this series, though, I don‘t even bother placing a hold on it. I know it‘s gonna be way too uncomfortable for me to read it even once. 3y

I appreciate how the ebook has all the illustrations in colour. Thanks, Tor!

I barrelled on through OATHBRINGER today, mostly with my ears. The audiobook came available at the library and I knew I‘d have a crapload of hands-on-brain-off stuff to do so I nabbed it. Good choice, Past Me.

I can‘t say as I like narrator Kate Reading, though. She‘s crisp and rounded in an insincere way. Michael Kramer‘s Adolin voice is weird, too. Hmmm.

xicanti ALSO, I‘ve apparently been stressing the wrong syllable in a whole bunch of different names. Like, SHALL-an is actually sha-LAHN, which is a much nicer name. (edited) 3y
