When someone asks what movie is as good as the book (novella), I will say this one. I saw the movie when it came out years ago but never read the story until now. To me, the story was the script, and how heart-wrenchingly poignant of a story it is ... a story of love from soul to soul and having to live with denial and loneliness because the world won't accept it. As Ennis states, “If you can't fix it, you've got to stand it.“ My heart just weeps.

It took a long time for me to pick this story up. Not much to add to the numerous positive reviews. It is a masterpiece.

The movie definitely embellishes the parts between them out on the mountain and when Jack dies. It was really good, though. I see why people were interested in turning it into a movie. Just like the movie, this is literary art. It‘s sparse and clipped, much like Ennis and Jack themselves. It actually feels a bit like the movie, a lot happens, but not a lot is said (dialogue wise), but the message is clear. Highly recommend.

I love this movie. I‘ve wanted to read the short story that inspired the movie for a long time. When this audiobook came up for sale, I knew I had to have it. This is the next 32 minutes of my life!!!

Annie Proulx introduces us to Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, and manages to let us enter into their intimate, but somewhat secretive, love affair.
Through the pages, through the years, we witness their evolution: they get married, have children. But they keep making time to escape and live their intimate relationship: one or two weeks a year.
Beautifully written with an astute description of the characters, and their feelings.

Surviving #snowmageddon2020 here in St. John‘s, NL 🇨🇦. The city is still under a state of emergency. I can‘t leave the house but at least I‘m getting a lot of reading done.

I'm not really sure why I chose to listen to this on a grey evening when I'm so tired that the slightest of winds could probably provoke tears but there you have it.
It's amazing the depth of feeling and character Proulx conveys in such a short story. And I feel that many are all too familiar with the feeling of having let time slip by.

This book ( and movie) broke my heart on so many levels.

My last entry for a challenge is reading a western. Since I really dislike westerns typically, I‘m not going for a “real” western. I had read this years before the movies and loved it, Annie Proulx, you understand. So here I go. #13inThree

There is something spartan about this novella that succinctly conveys the repression, self-loathing, and heartbreak that drove Ennis to lead an unfulfilled life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m not crying in my car- that‘s totally just allergies...

I only recently found out this was a short story before it was a movie. It‘s very short- about an hour on audio.

If you loved the movie, you‘ll love reading this too. I did.

Wow, that was raw, and amazingly heartbreaking, such depth of feeling, from love and loss, packed into so few pages.

I have not seen the movie and have never read anything by this author before. I keep hearing about Barkskins, so I wanted to get a sense of her writing. Holy moly, it was a slow love. The language was hard at 1st, but dammit it touched me. Chocked up twice. Love makes time pass too fast 💗😥😳.

Seeing Annie Proulx on Thursday so I finally read this short story and I'm so glad I did. I have no idea how she covers so much depth of emotion in so few pages. I was bawling my eyes out by the end. Ennis and Jack are unforgettable.
