Disrupted
Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Start-Up Bubble | Dan Lyons
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Wildly entertaining ... Lyons has injected a dose of sanity into a world gone mad." ---Ashlee Vance, New York Times-bestselling author of Elon Musk For twenty-five years Dan Lyons was a magazine writer at the top of his profession--until one Friday morning when he received a phone call: Poof. His job no longer existed. "I think they just want to hire younger people," his boss at Newsweek told him. Fifty years old and with a wife and two young kids, Dan was, in a word, screwed. Then an idea hit. Dan had long reported on Silicon Valley and the tech explosion. Why not join it? HubSpot, a Boston start-up, was flush with $100 million in venture capital. They offered Dan a pile of stock options for the vague role of "marketing fellow." What could go wrong? HubSpotters were true believers: They were making the world a better place ... by selling email spam. The office vibe was frat house meets cult compound: The party began at four thirty on Friday and lasted well into the night; "shower pods" became hook-up dens; a push-up club met at noon in the lobby, while nearby, in the "content factory," Nerf gun fights raged. Groups went on "walking meetings," and Dan's absentee boss sent cryptic emails about employees who had "graduated" (read: been fired). In the middle of all this was Dan, exactly twice the age of the average HubSpot employee, and literally old enough to be the father of most of his co-workers, sitting at his desk on his bouncy-ball "chair." Mixed in with Lyons's uproarious tale of his rise and fall at Hubspot is a trenchant analysis of the start-up world, a de facto conspiracy between those who start companies and those who fund them, a world where bad ideas are rewarded with hefty investments, where companies blow money lavishing perks on their post-collegiate workforces, and where everybody is trying to hang on just long enough to reach an IPO and cash out. With a cast of characters that includes devilish angel investors, fad-chasing venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and "wantrapreneurs," bloggers and brogrammers, social climbers and sociopaths, Disrupted is a gripping and definitive account of life in the (second) tech bubble.

There's an old expression on Wall Street. 'When the ducks quack, feed them.' Have you heard of that? Back in the nineties investors wanted to buy anything with dotcom at the end of the name. So that's what we gave them. Our job isn't to talk people out of buying. Our job is to make what people want. Our job is to feed the ducks. And right now [2012-13], the ducks are hungry.

We‘ll y‘all, two big things are happening in my reading life.

1. I‘m finished with #nonfictionNovember. I‘ve read 10 NF books in Nov and 7 in October! 🎉📚🎉 I feel like that‘s pretty darn good! 😁😁

2. I will be rereading fiction books through the holidays to escape and hopefully ensure my depression will continue to improve. The first 6 are pictured above. 📚📚 Hugs to anyone else who feels stress around Dec! 🤗🤗🤗

PacingTheCage I am currently reading My Year of Rest and Relaxation. So far, so good. 6y
Megabooks @dltpacngthecage Her books are really bizarre, but I find them weirdly endearing. I may reread this too. 6y
PacingTheCage @Megabooks this one is bizarre but, right now, I kind of want to be this character (I'm at the very beginning )😁😁😁 6y

Leniverse Wow, well done on the non-fiction! 👏 6y
LauraJ Your plan is a good one. I‘m not a fan of the holidays. 6y
Megabooks @Leniverse Thank you! 😊💜 6y
Megabooks @LauraJ Yes, I find the holidays stressful. Any kind of #selfcare is good. Wishing you a peaceful season 💜 6y
HeavenlyBooks I'm interested to see what you think about Tampa. I read it a couple months ago. I'm curious about "my year of rest and relaxation" but I think I want to read some more reviews of it before I commit it actually buying it. 6y
Megabooks @HeavenlyBooks I already read Tampa in 2017. The audiobook has great narration as well. I like the book. It has extremely graphic sexual content including between a minor and adult. It‘s purposefully uncomfortable in that way. If you can handle that, I do recommend it. Honestly as far as adult/minor this one bothered me more than Tampa. 6y
Megabooks @HeavenlyBooks I usually reread books in the winter, especially between thanksgiving and Christmas. 6y

First book of the #24in48 finished! (Obviously I had started it before the ‘thon.)

I really enjoyed this book. I have worked at some companies with kooky cultures, but HubSpot takes the cake! Definitely an interesting look into a tech startup. 4⭐️

Reading this book, ironically reminds me a bit of my own experience developing the Litsy app. I‘ve developed for a few small startups and they all bear resemblance to Lyons experience with Hubspot. The passage I captured here represents what I think is one of the key similarities to why many ventures fail. The book itself is entertaining but Dan comes off as a bit of a whiner. My experience with the first Litsy was disappointing but fun.

Reading this book and dying of laughter at the cross section of pokes at marketing and startups. Actually pretty sure at some point, this book might roast everyone. #tech #biz #nonfiction #lol

Hey Dan, here's some food for thought: maybe the problems with the tech industry are *actually* not because of "the youths" you despise or the products you don't understand. Maybe they're caused by entitled dudes who assume the world is going to be handed to them just because they showed up. Sound familiar? Alas, not confined to the tech industry, as you so perfectly demonstrated in this tale of, as you yourself put it, "beached white male" woe.

OffTheBeatenShelf.com This book sounds terrible! And downright stupid. 😯 7y

This after a sentence "I'm back in the world of grown ups." Yes, the mature and sensible world of grown ups where you talk about poop and huge cocks. Extremely slow clap.
P.S. I talk about that stuff too of course but I don't want a FUCKING MEDAL FOR IT.

First pages are all about how dude has no experience and is "reinventing" himself in an industry he has no background in. Then he finds out out young dude with three years of EXPERIENCE in the industry will be his boss. Proceeds to have mid-life temper tantrum meltdown at having to *gasp* interact with LOWLY MILLENNIALS. If the whole book is like this I may throw it across the room. Pray for me. And poor Zack. ??

Since it is already the 21st, here's today's #ReadJanuary. Today's prompt is "a topic you'd like to know more about" and I've selected Disrupted by Dan Lyons about his experiences as a non-millennial working at a startup. I'm fascinated by books about the inner workings of tech companies and Disrupted had a great inside look. Recommended for fans of Elon Musk's recent biography. Also, good luck to all doing #24in48! #atopicyoudliketoknowmoreabout

Funny, insightful book - especially if you work in technology or startups. I recognize so much in this book about my startup job that I hate, reading it felt like having a good ranting session with a witty, snarky friend.

Giving this book another read after the author gave a talk at my company, where I just started working. I've read the ebook version of this previously, and it's a hilarious story. Also, terrifying.

I loved this book for a lot of reasons. The politics, bosses and corporate hi-jinx felt familiar. But I also felt he was searching for complaints. We all have frustration and idiots in any job. He was one. He criticized people's work and then whined that no one liked him. But a candy wall ...crazy!

Steps outside the reality distortion bubble of the hi-tech world. He's nailing it so far and he's probably the reason I can't watch more than a single episode of Silicon Valley because it is too on point.

Started this last night. Picked it up partly because the author writes for Silicon Valley which is one of my favorite shows.
