Rabbit: The Autobiography of Ms. Pat
Rabbit: The Autobiography of Ms. Pat | Patricia Williams, Jeannine Amber
A remarkably bold and inspiring story of crime, motherhood, and redemption--not since Cupcake Brown's A Piece of Cake has there been a memoir this unforgettable. You want to know about the struggle of growing up poor, black, and female? Ask any girl from any 'hood. You want to know what it takes to rise above your circumstances when all the cards are stacked against you? Ask me.Comedian Patricia Williams, who for years went by her street name "Rabbit," was born and raised in Atlanta's most troubled neighborhood at the height of the crack epidemic. One of five children, Pat watched as her alcoholic mother struggled to get by on charity, cons, and petty crimes. At age seven, Pat was taught to roll drunks for money. At twelve, she was targeted for sex by a man eight years her senior; by thirteen, she was pregnant. By fifteen, Pat was a mother of two.Alone at sixteen, Pat was determined to make a better life for her children. But with no job skills and an eighth-grade education, her options were limited. She learned quickly that hustling and humor were the only tools she had to survive. Rabbit is an unflinching memoir of cinematic scope and unexpected humor that offers a rare glimpse into the harrowing reality of life on America's margins--a powerful true story of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of love.

In a total audiobook funk now after listening to this. What a remarkable story. Rabbit grew up in the hood in Atlanta with an alcoholic mother. There were very few people that took the time to help Rabbit and her siblings. She ended up with two children by the age of 15, selling dope on the streets to survive. This is one of those books everyone should read, to gain perspective.

It's been a bit since I've posted, but I have an audiobook finish! I really loved listening to Ms. Pat's story, narrated by the author. The things that happened to her growing up in Atlanta, and what she had to do to survive are tough to hear, but she somehow tells the story with humor. 4/5 ⭐. I really liked this one.

Tomorrow, @unabridgedpod will release our episode about Tiffany Haddish‘s The Last Black Unicorn. I picked up Ms. Pat‘s memoir Rabbit after seeing her stand-up show, and it seemed like the perfect pairing for Haddish‘s memoir. Tune in tomorrow for Unabridged‘s 32nd episode . . . and to find out why I paired the rabbit and the unicorn (and the pairings my co-hosts chose!).

This book ripped my damned heart out. No one deserves the upbringing Ms. Pat had. It didn‘t set her up for a good life. It was endearing to listen to her speak so candidly. It takes so much courage to put yourself out there; the good and the bad. She‘s been through some shit, then some more shit, then even more. You get the idea. But you see where she is now. She has a big heart and you can‘t help but love her.

Top is the original hard cover of Rabbit, featuring an adorable young Ms. Pat.
Bottom is the new paperback of Rabbit, featuring a "hooker" earring (the word is in quotation because it's the word Ms. Pat uses). Also the picture features Papaya Bunny bc I took it for the bookstore's Instagram.
Which cover do you prefer? I love the top one, but the bottom is growing on me.

Crystalblu I think I would be more likely to pick up the bottom one. 6y

1. The Knife of Never Letting Go depressed me and gave me nightmares, so even though I got pretty far, I just quit.
2. Pretty much anything I can eat one handed!
3. Rabbit by Patricia Williams. She is funny as hell, but she overcame some crazy awful shiz to get to where she is now (she does comedy under the name Ms. Pat).

I hadn't a clue who Ms Pat was before I borrowed this audiobook (turns out she's a comedian) but there was something compelling about the way she unflinchingly tells her life story - teenaged pregnancy, life in the ghetto, drug dealing, an abusive relationship. Despite all this, she doesn't give excuses, she doesn't lay blame, and instead appreciates those who have shown her the way, to reach further, to dream.

UnabridgedPod I thought this book was so great. I picked it up after seeing her show in Orlando....she was hilarious, and her story was compelling. The book met my expectations, though it was so heart wrenching at times. :) 6y

After seeing Ms. Pat‘s live comedy and laughing until tears, I scrambled to get my hands on her book. Because her comedy is memoir-like, I expected the book to be funny. It is not. Not at all. This was jarring at first. Once I acclimated, I loved it. Especially as it reaches the end, her thoughts on her role in public and herself and life are fascinating and enlightened. I liked this very, very much. She is incredible. And so is her husband.

Great autobiography read by the author. She unflinchingly recounts her struggles growing up poor in Georgia - pregnant at 13, alcoholic mother, abused by her boyfriend, never finishing high school, etc. It‘s amazing the challenges people in different life situations can face. She doesn‘t try to excuse any of her bad or illegal behavior, instead she recognizes the people who helped her to be better and find a better way.

I just finished this book and I loved it! Patricia Williams tells her life story with humor and stark honesty. This memoir doesn't pack any punches- Pat discusses her abuse by a family friend, getting pregnant at 13, selling drugs to make money for her and her kids, and eventually getting out of the business and finding her voice as a stand up comedian. She never stopped dreaming and never gave up.

I can't wait to work with this author when she visits the store later this month. Rabbit is a chilling and funny autobiography of a woman who grew up with an alcoholic mother, had two children by 15, a full time drug dealing career by the same time, was in a string of abusive relationships, raised an extremely large family with a loving partner (eventually), and now shares her stories from a stand up stage.

FountainBookstore Lots of profanity, for those of you sensitive to such things. But if you're hypersensitive, you probably don't want to read this anyway. I should add that this book actually made me cry tears of joy and sadness in equal measure , which hasn't happened to me in a long time. 7y
