Moriarty has written a decent beach book here with three plot lines converging around a secret that it immediately obvious to the reader. The book‘s epilogue drops this from an okay pick to merely so-so. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2020/01/review-husbands-secret-by-liane-moriart...

This plot was so similar to Big Little Lies (which I loved)that nothing really came as a surprise to me. I know it was written before Big Little Lies, but it doesn't change that I've read it the other way around.
The predictable plot and the somewhat annoying characters made this my most disappointing read thus far for this year.

Scochrane26 I‘ve read 2 of her books, the first was this one, & haven‘t understood the hype with this author. I haven‘t read BLL though. 1w
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Scochrane26 I read BLL when it was first published. Back then it was a new genre and author and everything was just bright and shiny. Now I wonder how much those things influenced my liking of the book. 1w

I really enjoy Moriarty‘s writing. I‘ve long been an escapist reader - I loathe spending my leisure time immersed in how tragic and horrifying the world can be - but somehow what I love about LM is how real her characters are. They‘re all so relatable, which I‘ve learned lately is key for me to enjoy a book. This one, about how people move on (or don‘t) after tragedy, was heavy at times but still so interesting. Keeping this author on my radar.

I‘ll never forget this book takes place in autumn - it takes place around Easter but in Australia where the seasons are flipped from ours in North America. And someone complained on Goodreads about this “error” asking (with several typos) if no one edits books anymore 😶

#fallisbooked

marleed Oh that‘s funny. I was just talking about that book while at lunch with a friend yesterday. My mind has always seem ‘Santa‘ was sometimes on a surfboard. But my head had never considered Easter with the falling leaves. In fact, I‘ve had Easter and spring synonymous. It may be my most memorable LM takeaway because i just hadn‘t considered it! 4mo

I read this The Husband‘s Secret back to back with Big Little Lies, and I enjoyed Big Little Lies more. I guess I felt more connection with the women. Although both books were written with the same formula.

The secret was easy to guess so I spent most of the book waiting for the inevitable event that would connect all 3 stories. I thought the epilogue was unnecessary. Who wants to know what might have been.

Ruthiella I‘m with you! I liked Big Little Lies way more! 😀 4mo

If you read her books you can anticipate how the characters and their plot lines will intersect, and it‘s a tiny bit predictable but a good ride anyway with some ambiguous moral dilemmas that are a good backdrop.

A woman finds an envelope, written in her husband‘s hand, and it says (*ominous music*): “For my wife, only to be opened in the event of my death”. But her husband is still very much alive, and he won‘t tell her what‘s inside. That's one heck of a premise! Moriarty's breakthrough novel wasn't without its problems, but still jaw-dropping in twists. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-husbands-secret-liane-moriarty/ #Australian

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed the inclusion of three different perspectives but I felt this book was a bit long. A couple things I found slightly unbelievable and at times I thought: why was that included? I think the author tried to dig into too many characters and it left some feeling flat. I hate to compare to Big Little Lies but this book just didn‘t give me the “I can‘t stop reading” feeling. Thankfully it‘s enjoyable enough and easy to read.

My Library is kicking off a new Book Club next week & this gal gets to facilitate. Even though I'm terrified no one will show up, I'm super excited to have the opportunity to run this group. Our first book is one I love : The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty.

SamanthaMarie That is exciting!! I so hope you have a good turn out. I run a book Club too and definitely turn out (at least of those who have actually read the book) is low but every now and then a book discussion is fabulous and I keep on pressing on!! :) 5mo
Book_Fairy_Mary @SamanthaMarie thank you! I really don't know what to expect, but I'm trying to stay positive! I'm terribly nervous about starting the discussion, even though I was an English teacher for 10 years. 🤣 I guess it's just different with adults/peers. 5mo
Scochrane26 I started going to my library‘s book club in the winter & really like it. I‘m the youngest one there. My library also has another club they do where they recommend books according to a theme that month, & we talk about what we‘re reading. They do a podcast about the recommended books. 5mo
Book_Fairy_Mary @Scochrane26 I love the idea of doing a podcast! That would be so fun! Do you feel like everyone has an opportunity to freely discuss the book at your book club or do some members dominate the discussion? 5mo
Scochrane26 @Book_Fairy_Mary we all have a chance to discuss the book. The librarian sometimes has a list of discussion questions, but we tend to hit on the important stuff without the questions. This is my first book club. I‘m sure you‘ll do great. 5mo

Reading this for book club. I‘m about 40% through this book and I‘m enjoying it so far - but I‘m not sure it‘ll be better than Big Little Lies for me.. I also think the blurb on the back may have done it a disservice because it‘s about so much more than that. Another book I read several months ago (I've been so busy lately and didn't have time to post anything on Litsy until now. ?)

Anyway, about the book, this is the second Liane Moriarty's book I've read after "Big Little Lies." I actually love both of them and really love the writing style of Liane Moriarty in general. This quote, for instance, will definitely be one of the book quotes I always remember.

This was my first Liane Moriarty. I enjoyed the divine justice but the overwhelming Catholicism turned me off. The story focuses on Cecilia Fitzpatrick who has an organized well-off life and whose world crashes when she comes across her husband‘s secret. Consequently, there are some interesting power dynamics that come to the surface. There‘s also another story line of Tess, whose son goes to the same school as Cecilia‘s daughters.

Megabooks Much less religion. 5mo

Gosh can Moriarty weave a story! If you like characters dovetailing where all the possible questions are answered, her books are for you. Well written women‘s fiction.

I said my piece last night on the fat shaming. If that‘s a deal breaker, don‘t read this. It wore on me, but ultimately didn‘t ruin the book. 3.5⭐️

Minor spoiler in the comments if you‘re interested in medicine/genetics.

Megabooks So they talked about one of the characters having Marfan syndrome, which is a rare genetic disease than can cause heart and major vessel problems among other things. My uncle has it and we had chased it back to the Yadkin River Valley in North Carolina. I am curious about how and where it is in Australia? 🤔🤔 8mo
Freespirit As a critical care nurse here in Aus I have seen it , but it is reasonably rare. We have a rate of 1:3,900 persons. Not sure how that compares to other countries. Sounds like another best seller! 8mo
Megabooks @Freespirit Wow! It‘s only 2-3/10,000 in America. My father‘s brother has a confirmed case without cardiac complications. One of my mother‘s cousins had a suspected case but was never tested. So it‘s kind of weird that it could be on both sides of my family. (edited) 8mo

I love some of Liane Moriarty‘s books, but I am so sick of her fat shaming!!

In this one, Will couldn‘t see his wife‘s cousin as a sexually interesting person until she lost 40 kg (88 lbs), but suddenly she‘s skinny and bam 💥 he wants to f*** her!

And also, Moriarty seems to equate being organized & involved in life with being thin.

Fat people can be attractive, put together, stylish, organized, etc. just like thin people. /rantover

KatieDid927 Oh crap, I haven‘t read her yet but I have a couple on her shelf and this sounds like it‘ll be a major problem for me. 8mo
kgriffith Yeah that‘d be a HARD pass for me 8mo
Megabooks @KatieDid927 This is a second read, and I had forgotten about how crucial that bit of info is in the Tess/Will/Felicity storyline. It‘s no better or worse than other women‘s fiction in this niche (beachy/light mystery fic), which is part of the reason I read less of it. 8mo
See All 18 Comments
CoverToCoverGirl That was a GOOD rant! 👏👏♥️ 8mo
Megabooks @kgriffith see above. I‘m over 350 pages in, so I‘ll finish, but it‘s really making it less enjoyable. 8mo
Megabooks @CoverToCoverGirl Thank you! 💜💜 I needed to get it out! 8mo
kgriffith @Megabooks oh yeah, that definitely wasn‘t a judgment, I should have said thank you for the heads up is all. We all deal with content differently based on our own histories and processes, and I absolutely respect that someone else will read and rant rather than avoid! 8mo
rjsthumbelina 🙌 preach it! I get so sick of that bullshit! I think I will pass on her books knowing this about the author. I can't support authors/show writers that use weight as a major plot point. Bc honestly, most of us moderately fat people (which are almost always the way these types of characters are described) have way too much life to live to worry about a few extra lbs & the people who love us agree! 8mo
Megabooks @kgriffith I didn‘t feel judged. If anything, I was trying to justify finishing to myself! Oh dear! Anyway, I think that‘s why Litsy is so great because you can call an author out on it, and then save a friend from wasting time on a book she wouldn‘t like. Win/win! 8mo
Megabooks @rjsthumbelina I‘m glad I‘ve libraried most of her books. Her style of writing is fun and easy to read, but I don‘t need another woman (besides my mom 🙄🙄) trying to fat shame me. I‘m right about the same amount as overweight as the character, and I think I‘m pretty! 8mo
kgriffith @Megabooks absolutely! 8mo
Slajaunie Agree! 8mo
saresmoore Ewwww 8mo
Cailey_Mac Ugh I HATE that too! 8mo
Megabooks Yes, I was disappointed with how many times she called this character fat or obese. And the adjective willowy was used a lot with thin characters. I hate that word. 😒 @Slajaunie @saresmoore @Cailey_Mac 8mo
GypsyKat I always think it‘s interesting how people can read the same book and get different things from it. It never occurred to me that it was fat shaming. I just felt like it was character descriptions. Some people are fat (myself included, and I‘m not using the word fat as an insult, just a fact) and some people are thin. If anything, I felt like the main character had issues about weight since she focused on it so much with the other woman. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 8mo
Megabooks @GypsyKat I think what got to me with this particular book is how Tess, with every thought of Felicity before she lost weight, thought that Felicity couldn‘t possibly attract a man. And Felicity herself thought she couldn‘t attract a man 90 lbs heavier. Plenty of men are happy to date women at any weight. Plenty of men prefer larger women. Women can be attractive at any size, get married if they choose, etc. 8mo
GypsyKat @Megabooks Oh I definitely agree with you on the last part. I just didn‘t see it as fat shaming because I felt like it was a character issue. Like Felicity didn‘t have confidence as a heavier woman. But that‘s just my opinion. I‘m not saying that anyone who saw it as fat shaming was wrong. Im just saying that I didn‘t see it that way. I've read 'Big little lies' by Liane Moriarty and loved it. I expected so much out of this book. The best thing about the book was the 'Epilogue'. It is the only part which increased the book's rating. I loved how the epilogue was framed, the whole book was pretty bland compared to the epilogue. Too stretchy with nothing amazing. I even expected the end pretty soon. Give it a try for the writer and the epilogue.

I struggled to get into this book on audio. It's possible I was just too distracted and couldn't give it a fair chance, but it wasn't until about halfway through I started getting interested when we finally found out the husband's secret. Before that it seemed like a lot of pointless, mundane information. Overall, I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. The epilogue annoyed me though.

Kaila-ann I‘m having the same issue with the audio version - too much going on and I can‘t seem to focus. I think I‘ll give the physical book a chance down the road. 8mo
