My newly minted teenager has discovered the bookish internet and is begging me to join her in a readathon on our holiday up north. How perfect is that - I‘m growing my own Litten here! 😂😂 She is also very pleased with the trilogy I got her because she saw it on the bookshelf of her favourite Youtuber. 🙌 And here she is cutting into the pavlova she made for Christmas. Do you have pav in the US? It‘s basically compulsory for a Kiwi Christmas 🎅😉

Centique @Reggie oh man you have to try it! It‘s like a giant meringue that goes all fluffy and marshmallowy under the crust. They you top it with cream and berries (or chocolate, caramel etc) YUM! 7y

Velvetfur I've just had to google what's the difference between a pavlova and a meringue because I thought we in the UK say 'meringue' and you in NZ say 'pavlova'. But I've just discovered that they're slightly different to each other! One learns something new every day, thank you! 7y
Centique @Velvetfur oh how funny! Yes they‘re quite different to eat too 😍 but you‘re right we often have different words for the same thing, even between NZ and Aus. Makes for some funny moments 😆 like Aussies call jandals “thongs” and we Kiwis think thongs are skimpy undies! 😳😳 7y
Velvetfur @Centique Hahaha! Yeah we call then thongs here too but we refer to the underwear as thongs and the sandals as 'thong sandals' usually, ha! I'd never heard the word jandals until I went to NZ and it had to be explained to me what they were, which people found extremely amusing 😂 7y
Kaye In our town, you could do a survey and I‘ll bet 90% of the people ( including me) would think Pavlova was Putin‘s secretary. If you mentioned thongs, we call them flip flops , and a thong is underwear without any cloth so your behind is flapping in the breeze. Then if you mention soda, we call it pop. (edited) 7y
heikemarie Pavlova exists but it‘s kind of old-school! Soda is soda in my part of the US, and I laugh when people call it pop ☺️ 7y

Centique @Kaye @inwhichHeikereadsharder so funny! We don‘t call it soda or pop. We say coke or lemonade. But then we went to the US and every time we asked for lemonade we got lemon squash - so we learnt to say Sprite! Pop over here means Grandpa 😂😂 7y
