Seven Gothic Tales
Seven Gothic Tales | Isak Dinesen, Isak Denisen
Originally published in 1934, Seven Gothic Tales, the first book by "one of the finest and most singular artists of our time" (The Atlantic), is a modern classic. Here are seven exquisite tales combining the keen psychological insight characteristic of the modern short story with the haunting mystery of the nineteenth-century Gothic tale, in the tradition of writers such as Goethe, Hoffmann, and Poe. "From the Trade Paperback edition."

Bailedbailed

It pains me, but I‘m putting this down for now. The writing is lovely, but somehow, I‘m just not that interested. I have to “force” myself to pick it up, and I‘m struggling with staying focused on the text. So I think it is time to realize this just isn‘t working for me at the moment 🤷‍♀️

#RecommendationsChallenge2018

TrishB I know when I‘m hesitant to pick back up that I should just bail! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm It‘s a pity, the edition is gorgeous and it sounds intriguing..but if you‘re hesitant, time to move on! 6y
ephemeralwaltz You do you! Lovely edition but we all have gorgeous editions of books we aren't picking up anytime soon 😂👏 6y

ferskner Nooooooooooooo!!!! I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I hope you'll want to come back to it eventually! 6y
Kalalalatja @ferskner I was really bummed as well, but I think it might be timing (hopefully) 🤞 6y
hilded I struggled with this one as well, spend several months getting through it, had to take long breaks between each tale. Still, there was just something about it. Her writing is exquisite. And I really liked 6y

My tbr is full of books with #sobeautiful covers at the moment, and now the only problem is to choose which to pick up next! 📖

This song is beyond cheesy and sugar sweet, but I have so many memories of young love and crushes connected to it, that I can‘t help but love it 😄 https://youtu.be/8ChU_YVWne0

Lola @Cinfhen I did! You have the UK cover! So glad I have that one, too. I saw the US version last night in the flesh (in the paper? 😛) and it doesn‘t begin to compare. 6y
Kalalalatja @StoriesandCode @JennyM @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @Itchyfeetreader thanks all! 💕 @Lcsmcat it is the Folio Society edition of the tagged Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen book 👌 @youneverarrived I‘m seriously in love with these anniversary editions 😍 6y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen I‘m pretty sure I‘ll go with that next, but I‘m away with friends all weekend, so I won‘t get much reading done. @Lola I love the cover, but sadly it is a library book so I‘ve to give it back at some point 👎 6y
Mdargusch So pretty! 💙💙💙 6y

Bailedbailed

I have been struggling to get through these for a month. Some of the writing is brilliant but she can‘t seem to stick with one story but veers off into another story, then another, and another, until I forget who the story is supposed to be about in the first place. I have limited patience with interpolated tales (especially in short fiction) and these are chains of tales. She has story attention deficit AND they aren‘t Gothic at all!

Three more library holds for my #FreakyFriday list came in! I'm really enjoying reading from @ferskner 's list. I'll be continuing this well in to May. This horribly busy time of year really steals away most of my reading time, so I'll get to these as I can. They all looked really interesting to me.
@monalyisha @Clwojick

Clwojick Ooo. I think I have that Tana French. I can‘t wait to see what you think of if 7y
SandyW I can relate to reading in to May. The Dinesen looks interesting. I'm stacking that one! 7y

My #readinschool books come from my Masterpieces of Scandinavian Literature class in college. I'd been deeply in love with Denmark since I lived there in high school, but that semester taught me that I could STUDY it. Changed my life. #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

Pickpick

A rainy day is perfect for one of my all-time favourites. Dinesen's stories are so perfectly poetic and intriguing, and every page has a sentence that makes me gasp. My favourites in this volume are The Dreamers and Deluge at Norderney 👌🏼

Howardsimmons So far I've read The Monkey and The Chevalier. I'm really enjoying it! 8y
