Thunderhead
Thunderhead | Neal Shusterman
Rowan and Citra take opposite stances on the morality of the Scythedom, putting them at odds, in the chilling sequel to the Printz Honor Book Scythe from New York Times bestseller Neal Shusterman, author of the Unwind dystology. The Thunderhead cannot interfere in the affairs of the Scythedom. All it can do is observe--it does not like what it sees. A year has passed since Rowan had gone off grid. Since then, he has become an urban legend, a vigilante snuffing out corrupt scythes in a trial by fire. His story is told in whispers across the continent. As Scythe Anastasia, Citra gleans with compassion and openly challenges the ideals of the "new order." But when her life is threatened and her methods questioned, it becomes clear that not everyone is open to the change. Will the Thunderhead intervene? Or will it simply watch as this perfect world begins to unravel?

Next instalment in the trilogy. Now included is the perspective of the Thunderhead, the omniscient AI which has been granted government of the world, and a number of other ancillary characters. Whilst the Scythedom has dominion over death, the Thunderhead controls everything else. It is shown as a benign presence, although I wonder whether this will be maintained as a basic premise of the series is that power corrupts.

This book was one of those very rare occurrences where the sequel is even better than the original! Shusterman builds on the world he introduced in Scythe, while introducing more characters and plot lines. The ending gave me chills, and utilized my all-time favorite trope. (For the sake of spoilers, I won't say which one.) ;) Truly an amazing book.

Outstanding 2nd book in the Arc of a scythe series. Rowan has gone rogue, Cittra is Scythe Anastasia and the object of a death threat. The Thunderhead senses some awful shift coming, centered on the scythes and that Anastasia is in trouble but also the key to salvation. Interesting new characters plus fascinating biblical imagery. https://cannonballread.com/2023/03/thunderhead-arc-of-a-scythe-book-2-elcicco/

In the second book in the Arc of a Scythe Trilogy, Rowan follows his calling to become a scythe-slayer; tracking down all of the scythes who are abusing their power and giving them a premature retirement. However, on his journey down this path of becoming the scythe grim reaper, he finds many uncomfortable visions of familiar faces and a litany of hardships reminiscent of the cosmic horror genre.

[CONTINUED IN COMMENTS]

James.Ruddick [PT. 2]

Meanwhile, his estranged lover, Citra Terranova, A.K.A. Scythe Anastasia is also working to define her identity as a scythe as she completes her apprenticeship under the Grande Dame of Death. But, the scythedom is infected with an ever growing virus. A virus whose main goal is to exterminate people like Citra, and the only way to stop it is to work with allies new and old to uncover mysteries as ancient as the scythedom itself.

If you like books with great worldbuilding, you‘ll probably enjoy this, but I do think the first one was much better.

Although I feel like Thunderhead had issues with some of its side plots, characters, and pacing, it did a good job at expressing themes of how the line defining ourselves is increasingly blurred as we blend with progressively advancing technology, and how large the moral gray area can be when humans are given the power of gods.

This was going to be my pick for #Booked2023 #AnyPartofATrilogy because when I read Scythe years ago it was a true trilogy, but I went to request book 3 from the library last night I noticed that a book of short stories had been written about this world after book 3 which inexplicably seems to be labeled book 3.5. Do people think this still works for the prompt since it‘s not part of the novel arc, or should I pick something else?

Cinfhen I think it‘s fine but ultimately it‘s what you think😊It‘s really your challenge 😘 1y
Soubhiville I think you could still use it. The short story collection is written by different authors, kind of a collection of fan Fic from the same world. 🤗 At least that‘s my understanding- I haven‘t read it yet. 1y
IndoorDame @Soubhiville oh, if it‘s by multiple authors that makes me really disinclined to read it. And I was already somewhat on the fence. I probably will still use this then if it‘s closer to fanfic. Thanks! 1y

I have finally finished the 2nd Arc of Scythe book last night. It took me months, my son recommended it so I feel I need to complete it, but it felt a bit of a chore. The chapters are short, and the world building is decent. But just like with the first book I felt things didn‘t start to really happen until about 70% mark. The final book is huge and I am not sure when I will get to it.

I‘m blown away by this sequel. 2/3 series got crazy with an amazing buildup. We now have these two new scythes, trying to change the world. One from inside, one outside the scythedom. Still not sure I see their romantic attraction. Very intrigued by this new main character. Let alone how the Thunderhead was personified. They‘re up to something. ending was top tier insane and fast paced. Not a book you ever want to put down before you‘re done.

Not as fast-paced as the first book but still a fun and insightful read. I think it might be even better.

I like the Thunderhead. It's, uh, a great character. Its narrative is very timely, too—breaks my heart.

So this trilogy did not remotely suffer from second-book slump. I could barely put this one down, despite the fact that it qualified as #AlmostaChunkster at 504pgs. Not only is the story excellent, I found myself contemplating things like - what makes us human? What gives us purpose? Would a world where everyone is “fixed“ rob us of some of our very essence? Don't get me wrong, these books aren't at all preachy, but the very world that ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Shusterman has created lends itself to these types of questions, and I love it. Both terrified and intrigued to see where Book 3 goes!

Somehow, the windowsill is now FULL! I have a lot going on in April apparently! Part of what is happening is that I have become entangled in multiple series so several of these books are the "next up" for those. A couple are new arrivals from the library, this month's #Roll100 books, and a few other challenge reads. I also had three Cinderella variations on my TBR so we will see if I get to any of those for April's #fairytalereadingchallenge ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Several of these are staying in the windowsill until I complete another series or two. The Ace of Hearts and Engaging Mr. Darcy both start new series that my sister loaned me; Magic Bites, Stay With Me, Cinder, and the Jill Shalvis book all start new series as well, so I am not picking any of those up until I check off a series, as I am somehow already in the midst of six! 😂

The windowsill doesn't even include my chapter-a-day books ⬇
2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) of which I now have five - I'm continuing North & South and The Other Bennet Sister for the #PemberLittens, a nonfiction book called London Under, Kilmeny of the Orchard for this month's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead, The Riddle of the Sands for #22booksin22 (I started this one but even though I want to finish it, it just wasn't particularly exciting, so I switched it to chapter-a-day about 2/3 through the book lol) and my April #BookSpin 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) which has turned out to be Gone With the Wind - a book I've never read (also have not seen the movie) so I literally am going in completely blind. It's absolutely HUGE so I am going to stick with a chapter a day until I get a feel for it! The tagged book (and book three in the series) finally came in the mail yesterday so I dived right in and am super excited to see where the story goes. Somehow, I'm going to try to connect as many of ⬇ 2y

Bookzombie I do enjoy seeing your windowsill! It looks like it exploded with books this month. 😄 Do you like audiobooks? I listened to the Percy Jackson books and enjoyed them on audio. It‘s been years since I read GWTW. As a kid, I loved the movie. 2y

TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - I'm enjoying Gone With the Wind much more than I thought I was going to, so we will see how it progresses! And yes, the windowsill is COMPLETELY full! It's out of control!! 😂 2y

I really enjoyed this as the second book in the Arc of the Scythe series overall. I enjoyed Rowan becoming a Batman avenger type chapter for this book. I also enjoyed Citra and her mission of fighting the new order scythes from the inside of the scythes. Wasn‘t rally thrilled with the what happens with Goddard in this book. But other then that I think this is my favorite book from the entire series #booktube #bookreview

Book 2 in the Arc of the Scythe series. In the future people an live forever and Scythes are ordained people who glean (murder) selected people to keep the population balanced. The Thunderhead is a super almost omniscient computer that keeps earth running smoothly. In this book, things are starting to breakdown and evil is unleashed by a powerful person. Action ramps up more and more until the very curious inclusion. Can‘t wait to start book 3.

The 13 year old tyrant that is the self-styled leader of our mother/son book group has brow beaten me into reading this, the second book in the Scythe trilogy, far earlier than I‘d planned. Each night when I went to bed he‘d tucked Thunderhead neatly onto my pillow, lying in wait for me. I just couldn‘t take the pressure anymore and so I‘ve read it. Joking aside though, this really is a very good series.

5 ⭐️ Oh my! This was extraordinarily brilliant. Don‘t have enough superlatives to describe this book...

✅ fast paced read
✅ mind blowing plot twists
✅ thought inducing phrases by the thunderhead
✅ explosive ending literally & figuratively
✅ scalp trickling scenes & dialogues
✅ futuristic science fantasy fiction

(Cont. 👇)

BGam I really enjoyed the thoughts given out by the thunderhead. They really made me think about life and death in general. The story progression was quick. It couldn‘t be put down. In this book, we get to know more about their world in general, the historical background of seats of power of the scythes, their literature and also we get to read about the unsavouries, who are the socially outcast groups...(Cont. 👇) 3y
BGam of people that defy the authorities and the rules of the thunderhead and how the thunderhead uses one of them as a bridge between itself and the scythedom ...
Don‘t think, just go for it. You won‘t regret it. A very intelligent story and extremely well written without ever getting boring even for a second.

Low pick for me on this. I‘m enjoying the worldbuilding & the ideas it explores are fascinating. I think those are Shusterman‘s strengths, and they shine in the 1st book more than they do here. A 2nd novel in a series starts to dig into areas where I don‘t think he‘s as strong. The plot in this one kind of went to 11, and the careless errors were just as bad as in the first (get a new copyeditor!!). Still: curious to see how it wraps up in book 3!

Strong character development carries over from the first book as the younger characters come into their own.
