The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza
The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza | Shaun David Hutchinson
From the critically acclaimed author of We Are the Ants and At the Edge of the Universe comes a mind-bending, riveting novel about a teen who was born to a virgin mother and realizes she has the power to healbut that power comes at a huge cost. Sixteen-year-old Elena Mendoza is the product of a virgin birth. This can be scientifically explained (its called parthenogenesis), but what cant be explained is how Elena is able to heal Freddie, the girl shes had a crush on for years, from a gunshot wound in a Starbucks parking lot. Or why the boy who shot Freddie, David Combs, disappeared from the same parking lot minutes later after getting sucked up into the clouds. What also cant be explained are the talking girl on the front of a tampon box, or the reasons that David Combs shot Freddie in the first place. As more unbelievable things occur, and Elena continues to perform miracles, the only remaining explanation is the least logical of allthat the world is actually coming to an end, and Elena is possibly the only one who can do something about it.

This book was fabulously weird in a good way. It was original and humorous and poignant. It received 5 stars from me because one of Elena's voices came from a baby Cthulhu. I think that sets the tone.

Story of a teenage girl who is tasked by these voices to save the world by healing people. Asks questions on free will, choice, and moral obligation. Well written, funny, with characters to look up to in terms of maturity. Similar to his novel WE ARE THE ANTS. Fun read, definitely recommend

#currentlyreading THE APOCALYPSE OF ELENA MENDOZA by Shaun David Hutchinson. This book has the same voice and ideas present in his book WE ARE THE ANTS. Is the world worth saving? Are people worth saving? About 2/3 of the way through and thoroughly enjoying it so far!

What unique and awesome novel! Elena Mendoza was born of a virgin birth (backed up by science, thank you very much) and has heard voices speaking to her entire life. When a boy she barely knows shoots a girl she's crushing on right in front of her, the voices urge her to heal the gunshot wound. When she does, the boy is taken away by a bright light. Elena now has the power to heal, but more and more people appear to be raptured each time she does.

MidnightBookGirl Continued: The end of the world might be coming, but Elena still has school and complicated relationships and talking My Little Ponies to deal with. This book will have you laughing, weeping, and maybe believing that even if the world ends, there's still a chance to make your own choices. 4y

This book was absolutely amazing. the writing and overall story were so good I couldn‘t help but keep reading. It was so different than anything I have ever read. The best way I can describe it is faith/atheism/science and it was good.

There are also mentions of suicide in this book, but it does address it pretty well inmy opinion. If suicide isnot something you are comfortable reading aboutI would skip this book. #bookreview #yareads

This book was different just like a lot of things that Shaun David Hutchison writes. I went in this with an open mind because lately magic realism hasn't been my thing. I know Mr Hitchinson uses some in his books, but I enjoyed this some what. I liked the story line just had a hard time liking the main protagonist so much. She kind of got on my nerves. The ending was not satisfying enough for me either. Overall 3.5 ☆☆☆1\u002

I really enjoyed this book. The premise of it is loopy as hell: girl born from a virgin birth with magical healing powers and guided by voices from inanimate objects. And oh yeah, people are being raptured, too. As crazy as it sounds, it had a great plot and I was always wanting to read more to find out the rest of the story. So overall, check it out.:)

Started this today! This is a very quirky book to say the least! A girl born from a true virgin birth with powers to heal and suck up people into clouds?? Weird but cool!! Not spoilers as it‘s on the inside cover‘s summary. lol

Started this audio while washing dishes earlier. I‘m hooked already! And so far, I can‘t help but think of the brilliant, short-lived TV show “Wonderfalls” - as protagonists in both hear voices from inanimate objects. Elena seems to deal with a bit better, though.

Clare-Dragonfly Wow, this sounds wonderful! I‘m surprised I haven‘t heard of it before. 6y

Elena is the only recorded product of parthenogenesis in a human. She's also heard voices since she was little and learns she can heal people when she's told by one of the voices to heal her crush's gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Sbux where she works.

This is surreal and heady and lovingly written. I couldn't stop reading. Also? A queer, Latinx teen girl's story, and it's not about her sexuality? Yes, please.

This was a cute book, partly about having a crazy power you don‘t understand, and partly about learning to make choices and what impact that can have. A little preachy at time, I liked the characters.

This YA book was so fresh and unique with witty, smart writing. Elena Mendoza heals her crush after the Starbucks logo tells her to. Logos and other cute inanimate objects continue to talk to her telling her to heal others to prevent the end of the world. I'd love to see this as a non-YA book, but still thought the book was well done. Good for the high school crowd and up.

3🌟🌟🌟There‘s a reason I rarely read YA... this is a pretty good example of why👆🏼🤦🏻‍♀️. They‘re very cliche and filled with whiny whiny whiny woe is me redundancy (see what I did there 😒)... Here I added more ...‘s and I‘ll throw in a huge *Sigh* in ode to the YA novels and all their cheese 🧀 w/ a kind of sort of story in there ✌🏼

This was such a weird book, but in the best way possible. Girl has healing powers. Voices speak to her through Chtullu dolls & Starbucks' logos. World might be ending, might not. I really enjoyed the focus on character & day to day life in contrast w the magical elements & that the two were juxtaposed without commentary. And the theme that the only way for us to save the world is to save it ourselves felt appropiate. A wonderfully strange read!

rachelsbrittain Definitely think I'm going to have to check out some of Shaun David Hutchinson's other books now. 6y

Elena Mendoza is special. She is a product of parthenogenesis. She has also been hearing voices from inanimate objects all her life. While working at Starbucks, a girl she has a crush on gets shot by another classmate. The siren on her apron tells her to heal the girl who was shot. From there on, this is all the first 10 pages, it is this unique and deep novel about life. It is timely and maybe Shaun‘s call to the human race to get it together.

Holy crap!!!! How exciting when your mind gets blown when your MC, Elena, and her surprisingly philosophical, dirtbag, ex-bf, Javi, have this existential discussion about death in Harry Potter. This is just the beginning. Javi goes onto discuss Professor Quirrel‘s death and what he says is pretty eye opening. This book so far is soooo good.

Once I got my thoughts in order about this crazy, wonderful book, I have finally got a review up! This book has the wildest premise: Elena Mendoza is the product of parthenogenesis, and if she didn‘t have enough to deal with, being a bisexual teen of Cuban descent, she finds out she‘s kicked off the apocalypse and she has healing powers. And people are being raptured. Suspend your disbelief, this is a wild ride!

Y‘all. This book was amazing. And hilarious. And touching. And so powerful. I literally couldn‘t put it down. I could have read another 500 pages and I‘m so sad this author isn‘t a sequel kind of writer. Seriously though, go buy, download, borrow, check out, or get yourself on the waitlist for this one. Such a massive fave. Also, I think Sir Terry of the apocalypse story to end them all would approve mightily.
