Golden Compass (Anniversary)
Golden Compass (Anniversary) | Philip Pullman
***** THE BOOK OF DUST, the long-awaited new novel from Philip Pullman set in the world of His Dark Materials, is here at last and has been hailed by the New York Times as "A stunning achievement"*****The modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an "All-Time Greatest Novel" and Newsweek hailed as a "Top 100 Book of All Time" is now available in a slipcased hardcover edition that includes a conversation with Lev Grossman, bestselling author of the Magicians trilogy. Fans, collectors, and new readers alike will appreciate this beautiful book that has been changing worlds for twenty years. Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal--including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help on of them will be to betray the other... A masterwork of storytelling and suspense, Philip Pullman's award-winning The Golden Compass is the first in the His Dark Materials series, which contintues with The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. This edition includes: * A gorgeous slipcase and new jacket art.* A conversation between Philip Pullman and Lev Grossman, author of the Magicians trilogy, that covers the scope and tradition of fantasy literature, Pullman's influences, and the impact that the entire His Dark Materials series has had since publication.* A letter from Philip Pullman to fans, marking the book's twentieth anniversary. My first read of 2020 was a reread of a childhood favourite - it blew me away just as much as it did when I was twelve 🙌 As a kid, I loved the adventure. As an adult, I loved the world building and the complex relationships. And I managed to binge all eight episodes of the BBC adaptation yesterday before I fly home today ✈

twohectobooks I‘ve been wanting to reread this one too, now that the BBC adaptation has everyone talking about it again. Glad it held up for you! 2w
Lucy_Anywhere @twohectobooks it was definitely worth the reread imo. And I loved the adaptation 😊 2w
emmaturi Great cover! I also love this series! 2w

The tv show made me curious again, and so I decided to re-read the books series after probably... 10 years? I think I was ten years old, and some parts scared me to death while others left me confused. I‘m close to the end of the first book, and I love the special connection between Lyra and Iorek.

#hisdarkmaterials #northernlights #philippullman

LibrarianRyan I have just a few episodes to finish myself and had the same thoughts. But my nephew wants to borrow my copy so he will probably get to it first. 2w
BookwormM I will also be rereading this year and I have the latest Lyra book to read 2w
thewallflower0707 @LibrarianRyan how do you like the show? 2w
See All 6 Comments
LibrarianRyan @thewallflower0707 I am liking it but I think its mainly because I am far enough away from reading the books that I am not yelling at the screen. Plus I have not started the book of Dust series so I assume the “new“ things are from those books. I think they have done a better job than the movie did. And I think I read that it already got a season two so YEAH. 2w
thewallflower0707 @LibrarianRyan my biggest issue with the show is that they really botched up the dæmons. They are not really on screen or important to the plot. I think they already wrapped up filming for season 2, and since it is the BBC I‘m hoping they will not cancel it abruptly. 2w
LibrarianRyan @thewallflower0707 I finished season one last night. And the ending!!!. Not what I remember from the book, (But I have not read the Subtile knife yet). (I have a problem getting sequels read). I agree. You don't see much of them. Then how they changed the lab and who was in the cage and the ceiling. I think it worked for the show but.... and the whole part with Coulter at the end. hummm. 2w

Going into this book, I thought this was another fantastical world with strange creatures and phenomenas but it is deeper than your average fantasy book. It takes elements from religion, philosophy, free thinking and how sometimes religion hinders it. I loved the idea of the soul of a human, called daemon, being an animal, detached from your body.
This is a fantastic book that has a lot of exciting things that make you want to read the next part.

TrishB Amazing stories 👍🏻 4w

I started watching the new HBO series, His Dark Materials, & really have been enjoying it, so I decided to start reading the books. This first book in the trilogy had been adapted for screen years back but the movie really didn't do the book justice. I absolutely loved the book and main character, Lyra. The magic of this book brings back the feeling of comfort and childhood that series like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter produced.

Anybody else watching the His Dark Materials series? The books weren‘t my favorite things I read as a child but I am very intrigued by the series. (Yes I watch absolutely everything with subtitles)

Emilymdxn Yes I am! Im very behind on the show as I‘m awful at making time to watch tv but I think it‘s so good! I read northern lights a few years ago but the show is making me want to read the whole series properly. How fantastic is Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter??? 2mo
Soubhiville I watch everything with subtitles too. I‘ve watched the first episode, and thought it was a good start. I did love the books, so I hope the series does them justice! 2mo
LibrarianRyan I have watched the first episode and plan to continue. I tried to watch it the night before last, but I have to pay attention because they have changed things or added to the first novel. (maybe parts from Book of Dust that i have not read yet). But I am loving it so far. 2mo

SassyBookworm @LibrarianRyan I need to do a reread it‘s been soooo long ago when I read it. A book a season would be good but that means only 3 seasons 😔 2mo

This book seems really interesting and fun for kids. It would allow them to use their imagination when it comes to mythical creatures and animals. The content I think would be appreciated by young students and readers, but might be challenging to read on their own. This book takes place in a mysterious alternate universe.

The Golden Compass written by Philip Pullman. Chapter 1 p.1-14. This book takes place in an alternate universe where “daemons“ are real. A daemon is a supernatural creature but in the book, it's basically your soul in the form of a talking animal that goes wherever you go. I would classify this book as High Fantasy or Science Fiction because of the complex characters and journeys.

The Golden Compass was written by Philip Pullman in 1995. This book involves a young girl named Lyra who is followed by a spiritual Daemon, who holds her soul and experiences everything she can. A group in this novel called Gobblers, are trying to destroy the bond between a child and its Daemon, and will stop at nothing until they destroy every single one. I enjoyed this book and love the movie as well!

I was excited to read this since HBO is coming out with the first season this fall. I enjoyed the first several chapters and the last several chapters. I really struggled in the middle. I feel like you could just cut 100 pages out and have a better book. Even though I would say, it's worth the read.

Not Convinced I'll read the next book in the series. Maybe I'll wait to watch season 1 of the show before I decide.

Caterina I recently read this one for the first time, and I'm currently on the second one, but honestly if I weren't in grad school and desperate for audiobook fluff while I run, I'm not sure I would've even read the first book! I'd say probably don't read the second one. 😂 4mo
bourne.shell @Caterina Haha. I knew it. I feel validated. But I compromised. I found a good podcast about the series called, Unspoiled: His Dark Material. I listened to it after I finished the first book and decided instead of reading the second book, I'd just listen to the podcast. Totally cheating. There are some interesting ideas in the books and I can't wait to see them on screen. You should check out the podcast though, it's good fluff for running! 4mo

I've finished one more book (tagged) for #BFC since classes started! While meal prepping a couple days ago. But maybe all of the reading I've been doing for classes counts for something? 😂 I have an intensive course that's eating up my Fridays and Saturdays for now, and when that's over I should be able to get into a better rhythm! Also still wearing a knee brace and not running, it's driving me crazy! #BookFitnessChallenge #bookdragons #BFCr3

Scochrane26 I count books about therapy most of the time, and I‘m sure you‘re reading a lot for seminary. In my presbytery, we recently examined a new pastor for ordination, & she said she‘s happy to be done w/ seminary because she can actually read books for pleasure again. 4mo
Caterina @Scochrane26 I have 6 courses, 15 textbooks, and lots of PDFs, but I haven't technically finished any books yet. 😂 But when I do finish some I'll be sure to count them! 👍 I think I'll probably only get reading for pleasure in through audiobooks during seminary - thank goodness for those! So relaxing to cook or run or clean while listening. 😊 4mo
