You Think It, I'll Say It
You Think It, I'll Say It: Stories | Curtis Sittenfeld
A dazzling collection of short stories from the New York Times bestselling author of Prep, American Wife, and Eligible Curtis Sittenfeld has established a reputation as a sharp chronicler of the modern age who humanizes her subjects even as she skewers them. Now, with this first collection of short fiction, her astonishing gift for creating characters that take up residence in readers heads (The Washington Post) is showcased like never before. Throughout the ten stories in You Think It, Ill Say It, Sittenfeld upends assumptions about class, relationships, and gender roles in a nation that feels both adrift and viscerally divided. In The World Has Many Butterflies, married acquaintances play a strangely intimate game with devastating consequences. In Vox Clamantis in Deserto, a shy Ivy League student learns the truth about a classmates seemingly enviable life. In A Regular Couple, a high-powered lawyer honeymooning with her husband is caught off guard by the appearance of the girl who tormented her in high school. And in The Prairie Wife, a suburban mother of two fantasizes about the downfall of an old friend whose wholesome lifestyle-brand empire may or may not be built on a lie. With moving insight and uncanny precision, Curtis Sittenfeld pinpoints the questionable decisions, missed connections, and sometimes extraordinary coincidences that make up a life. Indeed, she writes what were all thinkingif only we could express it with the wit of a master satirist, the storytelling gifts of an old-fashioned raconteur, and the vision of an American original. Praise for Curtis Sittenfeld Novelists get called master storytellers all the time, but Sittenfeld really is one.The Washington Post Sittenfeld . . . . is popular but intellectual, accessible but mysterious and, above alla perspective chameleon with an uncanny ability to enter the minds of callow prep school outcasts and devotedly compromising first ladies alike.NPRs All Things Considered [Sittenfeld] is a master of dramatic irony, creating fully realized social worlds before laying waste to her heroines understanding of them. . . . Her prose [is] a rich delight. The Boston Globe Three cheers for Curtis Sittenfeld and her astute, sharp and ebullient anthropological interest in the human condition. The New York Times

My second Sittenfeld title. This collection had solid writing and some interesting characters in many of the disconnected stories. “Plausible Deniability” is the most interesting. A bachelor enjoys flirtatious emails with a mysterious woman. Unfortunately, for many of the stories, I didn‘t think it so I didn‘t need her to say it. ⭐️⭐️+ out of 5.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A collection of short stories. The stories were ok…I felt as if they all ended pretty abruptly…would have enjoyed if a few stories were expanded into longer form, novella or a short novel. It was a decent palette cleanser read.

This was a nice collection of short stories. I found them interesting, and open for the reader to interpret and make their own personal connections. The connection I made is that some people we meet, and experiences we have, can impact our lives in unexpected ways.

This is my 3rd time reading this collection, and I enjoyed it more than ever! The stories are fairly straightforward with just a bit of zing. The collection builds well as each story improves on the last. (They are not connected, though.) The last story, Do-Over, completely won me over with its awkward dynamics between the characters. I really appreciated how well the aromantic character in Plausible Deniability is done.

A solid story collection exploring the theme of communication between people, including how differently two people can see the same situation. I really enjoyed this and it was a pretty quick listen.

You Think It, I'll Say It by Curtis Sittenfeld is a collection of short stories chronicling and eviscerating characters navigating everyday problems of the modern era and socioeconomic status, gender, and love. She's one of my favorite contemporary writers because she has an amazing style and no qualms about critiquing reality.

The book was a so-so (I‘m just not into short stories) but as always, the conversation at last night‘s #GirlyBookClub was great!

marleed I read this this year. I don‘t remember it - that‘s my problem with short stories. I need to develop a different way to absorb them. 5y
janeycanuck @marleed I think short stories are something you need to dip in and out of, reading only one at a time. I like to immerse myself more and a story is done just as I‘m really starting to sink into it. 5y

Despite being rather straightforward for short stories, I enjoyed this collection. The title story, The Prairie Wife, and Plausible Deniability (which reminded me of myself) were among my favorites. The narrators are good, as with most of Reese‘s book club picks.

Overall, I‘d recommend this collection to readers who aren‘t short story lovers and those who are. Pretty universal. 4⭐️

Mdargusch I loved Eligible but I‘m not a short story fan. You might‘ve persuaded me to try this though. 5y
Megabooks @Mdargusch Often authors feel like they have to include a bizarre twist (like someone turning into a cactus) or an opening ending for it to be a literary fiction story story™. The twists in these stories are no different than full-length novels and they all have closed endings. It‘s more like reading 20 page novels from Curtis than typical short stories! 5y
Mdargusch That definitely seems like something I would like then. 5y

I think this is a case of "it's not you, it's me." I have a really hard time getting into short story collections in general, but thought I'd give this a try because I love Curtis Sittenfeld's novels. The first few stories were fine, but i just don't feel invested enough to continue. And when it starts to feel like assigning yourself homework to read it, it's time to bail and let someone else check out the library loan ?

This is the book That Kind of Mother wishes it was. Still very much about privileged white people, but at least things happen to the moms (and others) in these stories. I found them engaging and challenging in all the right ways. The theme seemed to be: how do we live in the present with the long shadow cast by our past? Is there any connection between what we experienced earlier—say, in high school and college—to who we are now? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love all Curtis Sittenfeld writes and this did not disappoint. Stories of mid-western women primarily my age group (mid-30s-early 40s), dealing with expectations around babies, parenting, career choices, romance, and trump. My favorite was the one of the woman looking back at her time at Dartmouth. Took me straight back to college. Many stories felt so real I forgot it was fiction. #booked2018 #publishedin2018 #airplaneread

Cinfhen I thought this was nonfiction/ essay collection. Didn‘t realize it was fiction. Safe travels and great review💋 6y
Blaire Thank you! Heading to a friend‘s wedding. Her sense of place is spot on. She described several neighborhoods I‘ve lived in and the way she wrote about the people (esp new mothers) and places was perfect. 6y

#OctoberStats #BestOfOctober #OctoberWrapUp

This month I‘ve read 11 books. That‘s an average amount for me.
I‘ve not read many spooky reads, just the ones needed for #Pop18 and #Booked2018, because I don‘t like them very much and because I can read them year round as October is not considered an especially spooky month where I live.

These five were my favourites with the tagged book as my October number 1.

Reggie What is the spooky month where you live? 6y
Kalalalatja I know what you mean, our shops have tried to make Halloween a thing in Denmark, but we already have another holiday in February where we, or kids dress up, and go trick or treating, so the only Halloween-y stuff going on here is pumpkin carving 🎃🎃 6y
MemoirsForMe Anne Tyler! 🙌🏻 Such a great read. 6y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja Exactly, the shops try but it‘s more a commercial thing than anything else! We don‘t have a spooky month @Reggie but I think Carnival comes closest, which is just a few days however and celebrated only in the Catholic part of the country. 6y
BarbaraBB @UwannaPublishme Yay, a really heartwarming novel without being cheesy don‘t you think? 6y

(Repost, I accidentally deleted my original post)

This is collection of perfect short stories of women in their thirties, living in the Midwest in this Trump era. They are smart, they are a bit strange, they think about gender and politics. They are so real and I was sorry for each story to end. Highly recommended!
