All Summer Long | Hope Larson
28 posts | 39 read | 20 to read
Thirteen-year-old Bina has a long summer ahead of her. She and her best friend, Austin, usually do everything together, but he's off to soccer camp for a month, and he's been acting kind of weird lately anyway. So it's up to Bina to see how much fun she can have on her own. At first it's a lot of guitar playing, boredom, and bad TV, but things look up when she finds an unlikely companion in Austin's older sister, who enjoys music just as much as Bina. But then Austin comes home from camp, and he's acting even weirder than when he left. How Bina and Austin rise above their growing pains and reestablish their friendship and respect for their differences makes for a touching and funny coming-of-age story.

My #HolidayEscape playlist is made up of some songs that say “summer” to me—whether in the title, the vibe, or the nostalgia & memories they bring back (dancing at a Janet Jackson concert at Aloha Stadium). Had to end it with a touch of mellow ukulele by IZ & Somewhere Over the Rainbow/It‘s a Wonderful World. 🌈🌎☀️💙

Book 39
I won this book and it was okay. I‘m not a big fan of graphic novels but it was a pretty cool story about this girl who likes music and his best friend is going to a soccer camp for summer and she was sad about but everything turned to be okay, she got new friends.

I took myself to dinner and devoured more than my meal. When I saw the last panel and saw there were no pages left, I wanted to shout, "I NEED A SEQUEL! "
Bina and Austin reminded me of my friendship with my male best friend....only he moved away the summer I turned 14. We're still friends to this day.

Read this book to remind of the moment that made you fall in love with the passion in your life.

You won't regret it.

#AMonthOfSongs Day 25: 13yo Bina‘s bestfriend, Austin, is going off to soccer camp for an entire month, making her feel #WeDontTalkAnymore. While it is generally a feel-good story, it tackled important themes on growing apart, initiating new friendships, and befriending one‘s self. Definitely a must-read and must-find. Read for the challenge "Features a Musician" this MG graphic novel is a sweet story about the changing nature of friendship as you grow up. About how just because you become more of who you will be it doesn't mean that you can't keep old friends and make new ones. I've not read a lot of graphic novels even though they're are awesome medium, so it was nice to change it up.

Over the next few days, I‘ll be posting a few suggestions for the #Booked2019 spring prompts!

First up is #featuresamusician, 🎶 and I‘ve focused exclusively on fiction - from a wide variety of genres! I‘m especially drawn to stories about kid musicians with big aspirations! 🎧

Recent #botm Daisy Jones and the Six is another great option, and is getting a lot of #LitsyLove. 🎤

What do you plan on reading for this prompt?

Cinfhen I read a NF 🙌🏻🎤 6y
WanderingBookaneer Daisy Jones is a fantastic read. 6y

Librarian‘s review 😝 I read this to see if I should shelve it in Junior or Young Adult since the main character is just barely 13. I decided to go Young Adult because of the friend's older sister, but I won't hesitate to give it to an older Junior reader.

I loved how the author made music come alive in the illustrations. I would love to see this through Austin's eyes, too. I think it would be great for boys to read that perspective as well.

MeganAnn My son was looking at this one at the bookstore a few weeks ago. He had a gift card from Christmas and decided to get The Nameless City instead, but after seeing your review I might have to go back and get it for him. 6y

Arrived at my parents house and finally enjoying just sitting on a comfortable couch and reading. I‘ve ordered a stack of graphic novels for my daughter and am pre-reading some for her, I was so excited for this (I love Hope Larson!) but thought it might be a wee bit too old for my 10 year old. Awesome story, but I will wait a couple of years before giving it to her. The boy/girl elements are just slightly beyond her still. ❤️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bina and Austin have been best friends since they were 3 but things are changing the summer after 7th grade. Austin is going off to soccer camp & Bina has to find ways to keep herself busy. She hangs with Austin‘s sister Charlie—but is it convenience or friendship? When Austin comes back, he acts weird and Bina worries she might be losing her best friend. Being 13 is hard! Larson nails teen angst, summer escapades and friendship. A good read.

I‘ve had this checked out “All Summer Long.” (Sorry. I couldn‘t help myself. Also, it‘s true.) And I finally read it, now that I‘m paying overdue fines.

I really enjoy pretty much everything Hope Larson and this was no exception. Relatable story about those tough almost teen years where you‘re not quite a kid but not quite a teen and things are changing no matter what.

Many cats throughout but I was tickled by the grooming cat!

A cute coming of age story about a 13 year old girl with a love for music 🎶 who misses her best friend when he goes away to summer camp for a month. I can definitely see why my daughter loves this book, and I love the fact that it portrayed a male/female friendship that did not evolve into a romantic one! With a focus on navigating friendships rather than dating drama, cool illustrations, and a strong female teen protagonist, I‘m a fan, too.

MelissaSue81 Sounds like something my daughter would love. 6y

I‘m ignoring my TBR to delve into some of my daughter‘s books!

We head to VA on Thursday for my half-sister‘s wedding, where I will meet my half-brother and my birth father‘s extended family for the first time. My anxiety is up and I am super nervous! So middle-grade graphic novels is about all my brain can handle right now. 😂

Freakin loved this book 🖤 Wonderfully illustrated coming of age story about a teenage girl named Bina who has to endure an uneventful summer without her best friend, Austin, who is away at soccer camp. While trying to keep herself entertained, she finds companionship by befriending Austin‘s older sister. However, upon Austin‘s arrival from camp, Bina can‘t help but notice a change in Austin and worries he has outgrown their friendship.

Today‘s #libraryhaul!

Our library summer reading prog started Jun 1. Maya & I completed the 20 hr requirement already. I was devastated for M when a new librarian didn‘t believe that she had really read that much so quickly. When I told her to look at the reading log, which included titles and page numbers read each day, and ask M any questions about the books, I think she got the point that we are serious readers and not lying to get a prize. 😡

TEArificbooks Once we turned in our reading logs so early they didn't even have the prizes yet. 7y
Jeannie Nice about the books! So frustrating when people like this don‘t take kids seriously or think they‘re lying. Grr. 7y
alisiakae @mdm139 Maya ended up not collecting her reward today anyway. Our library gives kids who complete the program a free book, but they only had the picture books in for the younger kids. I just felt so bad that she wan‘t believed at first. I LOVE our public library, but I really miss our recently retired and beloved children‘s librarian. 🙁 7y
See All 11 Comments
TEArificbooks I am with you, they are always shocked when we come in a few days after it started. Once my oldest had to accept a picture book as his prize so he gave it to his little brother and I took him to B&N for a book at his level and a frappy. They just never seem prepared for avid readers. This year we have finished it and are holding on to the log to turn in later hoping for a better book selection. 7y
alisiakae @mdm139 the prize issue doesn‘t bother me nearly as much as accusing my kid of lying. Our library system is severely underfunded, and all prizes come from corporate sponsors. We stopped for a cookie on the way home. 😃 7y
Caterina My library forced kids to come in four separate times to get their logs stamped, even though I‘d finish the entire log in a couple days, so I guess it didn‘t matter that they never believed me - I had to come 4 times anyway! XD I‘m super jealous of these books as prizes that y‘all are talking about though - we only got Chick-Fil-A coupons. 🤣🤣 7y
LibrarianRyan @Caterina I hate reading programs like that. I miss running our reading programs. We always did a nice prize. I didn't like doing books because not every kid reads at the same level and I thought the books we choose for price kind is sucked. We did a prize like a lunch box (most popular) and an entry to the grand prize drawing. Avid readers could continue adding grand prize chances for additional reading. I miss running this. 7y
alisiakae @LibrarianRyan we have a nice summer program, it‘s really the librarian‘s attitude that had me so upset today. We have grand prize entries too (although in a county-wide library system with 1 mil people it‘s a long-shot!) It‘s interesting to see how other libraries do it; where we used to live they tracked by number of books read instead of time spent reading. 7y
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft I'm a big believer in time over book. It's an old example but still valid. One kids spends all summer reading through order of the Phoenix and another goes through 50 manga. That's not equatable. Plus it doesn't take reading level into account t. 7y
alisiakae @LibrarianRyan I completely agree! (edited) 7y
Amanda.T My library‘s program started on June 1st and they won‘t even start giving out prizes until next week. It‘s sad when they underestimate the power readers. 7y

This was such a sweet graphic novel! A friendship, instead of a romance, is the central relationship in this story (makes for a nice change). It's the story of a girl learning a bit more about herself and who she is throughout a summer while her best friend is at at camp.

3⭐️ Bina is looking forward to an epic summer with her best friend Austin trying to outdo last year's summer fun index. But that is not to be as Austin is headed to soccer camp. That means Bina has to find fun on her own. Based on the cover I was expecting more from this graphic novel. It's the story of a girl trying to find herself over the summer. It is music heavy, but not as heavy as I expected. Telgemeier does this type of story better.
