The Red Pyramid
The Red Pyramid | Rick Riordan
Carter and Sadie have nothing in common but their parents: their father Dr. Julius Kane, a brilliant Egyptologist, and their mother, a famed archaeologist who died under mysterious circumstances when they were young. The siblings barely know each other, but one night, their father brings them together at the British Museum, promising a research experiment that will set things right for their family. His plans go horribly wrong. An explosion unleashes an ancient evil the Egyptian god Set who banishes Dr. Kane to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives. Now orphaned, Carter and Sadie must embark on a dangerous quest from Cairo to Paris to the American Southwest, to save their father and stop Set from destroying everything they care about . . .

I won't say Harry Potter this time. 😉

Most people know of the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. I love Percy, but I love his lesser-known Red Pyramid series (The Kane Chronicles, Egyptian mythology) even more.

Read.Em.And.Eat Oooh! Don't forget Magnus Chase! Those were my favorites! :) 1w
mom2bugnbee @Read.Em.And.Eat I haven't read those yet, but I need to! 1w

The book started off a little slow, but picked up and was just as enjoyable as Percy Jackson. I vaguely remember reading it when it first came out, but I can't remember the next books at all, so I'm looking forward to reading them. #juvenilefiction #mythology #Egypt

Overall I liked the book, but the format and structure took some getting used to.
One other thing is that Set was referred to as the God of Evil. He isn't. He's the God of Storms and the Desert. He was in character in the book as a chaotic God but being referred to as Lord of Evil threw me off a bit.
It's a bit nit picky, but I did affect my enjoyment of the story overall.
Final word, a pretty good book.

I was told this book was very boring but I actually found it pretty good.
I lived Sadie Kane's sassy character. She really brought life to the book. She was fierce, fiery and lovable all the same! And her love for others was as strong as ever.
Carter himself was alright. I feel we didn't get to know him that well
Anyway. I am eager to keep reading.

Uncle Rick‘s godly adventures never fail to get me out of reading slumps! Fast paced and fun. The Egyptian gods work differently than the Greek/Roman gods so it felt fresh as well.

I'm sorry for the bad pictures my cat is sleeping on my lap so I tried to do it without disturbing her.
1. I got the two cat bookends on the left(not the books on the left) from my mother-in-law and the books on the right from my husband(plus The Masked City, book 2 don't have book 1 and a few that I got early).

If you have read Percy Jackson, well this is basically the same. Godlings, dreams that really are happening, powers they didn't know they have, great power without proper training. I gave it 4 stars because 1) The ending redeemed the book, the last 3 chapters were really exciting and heart warming and 2) Rick RIordan always interests me with Greek and Egyptian mythology.

DivaDiane Woah! I have never bought so many books at a sitting! Come to think of it, aside from text books, I don't think I've ever bought more than 5 books at one time, even from a used book store. 2y
jfalkens @DivaDiane it's hard to say no to 3 for $1 plus you have to be fast choosing because the sale attracts a lot of booksellers who aren't interested in getting the complete series just the ones in the best shape 😡 so usually we just grab anything that looks interesting by either author or title and weed it out as I read them and donate the rejects back to the library 2y

I loved the Percy Jackson books. This one was a fun read also! I enjoyed learning about Egyptian gods and goddesses and look forward to reading the 2nd in the series.

mom2bugnbee I loved this series even more than Percy Jackson. Carter is one of my favorite characters ever. ☺ And I knew *nothing* about Egyptian mythology, so it was fascinating to learn so much. 2y

Not currently at home with all my colorful books, so this is my contribution for #redwhiteblue #sizzlinsummerbooks Hope everyone has a safe holiday. Celebrating today is often difficult. Especially this year. It weighs on me to try and celebrate freedom & independence, when so many liberties are threatened every day for those I love near & far. But I do wish everyone a safe & peaceful day!

4thhouseontheleft I agree. The rising nationalism in America had bothered me for a while now, and I typically don't celebrate 4th of July. 3y

It has been a hot minute since I finished a book and another hot minute since I finished a Rock Riordan book. I split this one between audio and physical reading. It was awesome. I loved Sadie and Carter. It was a little more mature than the Percy Jackson narration and I loved learning the Egyptian mythology

I read the Percy Jackson books, & while I wouldn't call them great, they were entertaining. Prior to reading those, I was versed in Greek mythology. I, however, have a blind spot regarding the Gods of Egypt. I thought reading Riordan's Kane books might be a fun way to begin to bridge my knowledge gap, but these books have an orientalist feel that I'm not comfortable with. Any suggestions for entertaining books focused on the Gods of Egypt?

meandmybooks Not Gods, but Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mystery series got me interested in Egyptian archaeology and history . The first book is the weakest IMO but the series as a whole is fantastic. 3y
Abby-J @meandmybooks Thanks. That sounds interesting. (edited) 3y
readergeek I'm late but I had enjoyed River God by Wilbur Smith many times (I'm a re-reader). Also not gods exactly but very well done IMO. 3y

This doesn't quite measure up to the wonderfulness that is the Heroes of Olympus series- the Greek/Roman gods are just more fun, I guess. But... it wasn't awful, and I'm excited to find out how Sadie and Carter save the day.

I love learning about ancient Egypt so this book interested me. The chapters are alternately told in Carter and Sadie's voices. The brother-sister banter is an added quality that made the story fun to read. While the Egyptian lore is fascinating I felt there was too much information crammed into the book. The ending was a surprise and would have worked well as the conclusion without the need for a sequel.
