The Stranger Diaries
The Stranger Diaries | Elly Griffiths
A dark story has been brought to terrifying life. Can the ending be rewritten in time? A gripping contemporary Gothic thriller from the bestselling author of the Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries: Wilkie Collins and MR James meet Gone Girl and Disclaimer. Clare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. As a literature teacher specialising in the Gothic writer RM Holland, she teaches a short course on it every year. Then Clare's life and work collide tragically when one of her colleagues is found dead, a line from an RM Holland story by her body. The investigating police detective is convinced the writer's works somehow hold the key to the case. Not knowing who to trust, and afraid that the killer is someone she knows, Clare confides her darkest suspicions and fears about the case to her journal. Then one day she notices some other writing in the diary. Writing that isn't hers...

I liked Harbinder! I also appreciated diverse characters.

I really love gothic atmosphere, this reminded me of that. I loved the mixture of darkness and common police work. The setting was amazing!

The murderer was a bit too easy to guess beforehand but this was really enjoyable to read.

Soft pick for me. I didn't care for the multiple POV's. I give it a soft pick, bc I never expected the culprit of the murder. I consider it a Gothic vibe mystery.

I quite liked this. It was slow moving (as gothic stories tend to be), but the end definitely caught me by surprise! The book was from multiple different points of view: Clare‘s, Georgie‘s, and Harbinder Kaur, the main detective on the case. I was least interested in Harbinder‘s POV. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin I‘m not a big fan of “stories within a story”, though, so I tended to skim over the excerpts of “The Stranger”. I paid a bit closer attention at the end of the book when it was written out in full, however 8mo
jenniferw88 The series only gets better, in my opinion! (And go down the audio route if you can as Nina Wadia narrates - she's ideal as Harbinder!). I think Harbinder will grow on you as the series progresses (but it may be that I can partly identify with her that I think this!) 8mo

Gothic novel with a couple murders, a story within a story, a rotating POV, and a bit of a ghost element thrown in. I liked it, but didn't love it. Definitely a perfect October read, but not one I'll return to. I never felt invested in the three main characters, but I did want to find out how the story ended. I wish there had been more about the Victorian-era author‘s life.

I read this one for #booked2023 #anypartofatrilogy. I had actually already read the middle book - The Postscript Murders- and I didn‘t find this one as enjoyable to read but it is written by an author who lives on my village about my local area so I did enjoy the familiarity of the surroundings.

Cinfhen I love reading books set in my area even if the book isn‘t great 😊 13mo

Book 12

I listened to The Stranger Diaries. Clare is a high school English teacher who loves Gothic murder mysteries, including a short story written by a deceased alumnus of her school. When her colleagues are murdered, Clare, an avid journaler, begins receiving messages in her diary from the killer. The novel, interspersed with the short story, is an innovative and enjoyable murder mystery. I will read more by Elly Griffiths. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

jenniferw88 The next in this (loosely-connected) series is tagged. It mentions Claire once or twice but the common character is Harbinder. 2y

Enjoyed this mystery - I had a few suspects but did not know until the end who did it and why - an English teacher is surrounded by murder- people she knows are getting hurt - it seems to be tied into an author she is writing about and his story “The Stranger“ - this was a well written and interesting story and I enjoyed the story within the story -

1) It has to be set before the author was born. For example an Agatha Christie mystery set in the 1920s would not be historical fiction while Frances Brody's mysteries set in the 1920s are historical fiction.

2) “The Stranger“, the story within the story in the tagged book, is a very creepy piece of “Victorian“ writing.

Clare's friend and colleague Ella has been murdered. Clare is writing a book about R. M. Holland, a fictional 19thC writer of horror stories, whose home is now the school where she teaches.

The contemporary story was gripping but the story by R. M. Holland was by far the best thing in the book to the point where after reading the first extract I turned to the back to read the whole thing before starting the present-day narratives.

Reader, she went out. And was pissed. It was, of course, MY fault she went out. But I digress! This was the aftermath of our 13 inch snow just over a week ago. I‘m guessing that will be the pinnacle of snowstorms for us this winter in south central Michigan, but we‘ve got time to prove me wrong.

The book: I REALLY liked this one. Different from the Galloway series, with various perspectives and a gothic storyline and feel. ⬇️

MittenGirlPeach The perspective of the teenage daughter in particular was fabulous, and the detective at the center, who is not the main character of this story, is terrific. Harbinder is her name, and she‘s the character the series continues with. I have the second book checked out from the library, so it will go on my March #Bookspin list. 3y
RamsFan1963 Are you watching Matt play tonight? GO STAFFORD!! GO RAMS!! 3y
MittenGirlPeach @RamsFan1963 ABSOLUTELY! Matthew is my forever quarterback. The game against the Bucs nearly did us in. We were at our weekly euchre game with our besties (also Lions and Stafford fans, of course) and GOD, what a nailbiter. We saw him do that so many times over the years though; I don‘t know why I doubted! 3y

MittenGirlPeach @RamsFan1963 Good for you! The Bengals and Joe are very likable, but it‘s still Rams & Stafford all the way here! 3y

MittenGirlPeach @TheBookHippie you get extra snow AND wind! We‘ve had no snow to speak of at all up until now, which is becoming more and more common, of course. But it‘s starting to become heavy out there, so we‘ll see! 3y
TheBookHippie @MittenGirlPeach We already had a couple of feet we are just adding to it! The wind is NO JOKE. They just told high schoolers not to leave for lunch it's too treacherous. Why we had school is beyond me. The drive home is gonna be white knuckled AGAIN!! OY. I hear lots of parts of MI are seeing way more than they ever did! 3y
TheAromaofBooks Ooooo nice!!! We are currently getting bucketloads of rain (SE of Columbus OH) with incredibly vague information as to when it's going to switch to ice and then switch to snow... nothing like being give a range of somewhere between 0 and .75“ of ice and somewhere from 1-8“ of snow 😑 Usually the more wound up they are the less we get, so I'll be surprised if anything happens haha 3y
TheBookHippie They‘re sending us home early 🤦🏻‍♀️❄️🥶 3y
SRWCF And I'm just over here in southwestern Idaho saying, "Snow, where you at?" ? 3y
MittenGirlPeach @TheBookHippie that‘s something at least, but why have it at all?!!!! Argh. Drive safely! 3y
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks ughhhh. Rain and ice are the worst. Depressing and treacherous and it‘s cold regardless! Much rather have snow. 3y
MittenGirlPeach @SRWCF yikes! We had a few inches on the ground here, but it‘s been a very snowless winter so far. Until now! 3y
SRWCF @MittenGirlPeach We still have some snow on the ground from a mild storm a few weeks ago, but it hasn't even snowed at the ski resorts recently. This weather has been cray-cray lately! 3y

Clare Cassidy finds herself at the center of a police inquiry when one of her colleague and friend is murdered.

I liked the story within the story, with the gothic short story The Stranger by fictional author R. M. Holland embedded in the murder plot. It's an entertaining book to read, even if the perpetrator is quite obvious, and some elements of the plot weren't that interesting (perhaps too much!?) like the witchcraft component to the story.

I found this book quite pedestrian if I'm honest. Readable but uninspiring. It has a habit of jumping into the view of the pov character who has the least at stake in a scene. We observe Claire's pain rather than going through it with her. It also means the tension doesn't build in a satisfying way. The are some well written red herrings, but I found the ending ultimately uninteresting.

What a creepy story! I liked the three POVs and that they overlap, giving slightly different versions. The haunted house (school), the story within the story, and the copycat murders all added up to a page turning thrill. And the reveal! I did not see that coming! Starting reading The Stranger Dairies, which is described as a gothic thriller so should be a good choice for #Scarathlon2020

Love Elly‘s Ruth Galloway Series so interesting you see what I think of this.

#TeamSlaughter

TrishB Yet to read any Griffiths! (edited) 4y

Ruthiella I think you will like it! 4y
Andrew65 @TheLibrarian @Ruthiella I‘m sure I should. 4y
Andrew65 @TrishB Her Ruth Galloway series is one of my favourites. 4y
Andrew65 @Clwojick I really enjoy her writing. 4y
TrishB I have 1-6 of that series on my kindle! I guess I need to start it. 4y
jenniferw88 I loved this on audio! Need to try her series again, I couldn't get into it the first time I tried it. 4y
Andrew65 @jenniferw88 I felt it took a couple, to get going because the characters and interplay between them is the most important thing. 4y
Andrew65 @TrishB That would be a good start when you have capacity. 4y
kezzlou85 @Andrew65 there's a follow on to this if you like it. Featuring the detective in this. 4y
Andrew65 @kezzlou85 I‘ve got a Net Galley copy of the follow-up but wanted to read the first one before reading that. 4y
kezzlou85 @Andrew65 good idea. They're both really good. I enjoyed them. 4y

Calling all Murder Mystery/ Thrillers fans ! I am looking for some good recs to order for the high school. I have a LOT of high school senior guys who are reluctant readers, but really want Murder/ mystery/ thrillers to try to get back into reading. Any recs or favorites ? They don‘t have to be specifically YA, can be adult books as well. 🤗I‘m very new to this genre- I was blown away by tagged book, also loved The Girl on the Train.

Well-ReadNeck Reluctant readers often like series once they get hooked. The SJ Rozen Lydia Chin/Bill Smith series is fabulous The first one is 4y
Well-ReadNeck For psychological thrillers Dennis Lehane has some great ones My favorite is 4y
Well-ReadNeck Other mystery series that might be appealing to teens include a dash of sarcasm/humor with crime fighting. Like the Spellman Files series 4y

Well-ReadNeck For Black protagonists, try Attica Locke. She writes for television and her books have the propulsive plots of screenplays. 4y
Well-ReadNeck ... or for rural noir with a heist plot (edited) 4y
Well-ReadNeck ... and urban noir with teen protagonist (edited) 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I thought this story was OK but the murders were pretty great. Good for older YA readers, but the pink on the cover might deter reluctant boys. 4y
