Based on the film of the same name. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

I didn‘t love this but it‘s definitely thought-provoking. Women are suddenly imbued with the power to kill men at will, and chaos results. Men are understandably less than thrilled at suddenly becoming the weaker sex. I felt sympathy for the men being victimized by the women, but then my mind would go to the centuries of women enduring the same treatment. It proves my theory that everything comes back to Animal Farm—humans are corrupted by power!

TheIntrovertedDodoBird The TV adaptation of this is absolutely incredible! I really must read the book. Excellent, thought-provoking review! 8mo

I chose this for my book club selection. Although it was a powerful story about gender roles and reflects on the basic idea that “power corrupts” it was not one of my favourites this year. Maybe a bit too violent for my taste. I will watch the show to see how they adapted this into TV.

That my daughter is reading this for Yr 9 English makes me a little uncomfortable (some graphic sexual abuse scenes) but given they have all read the entire CoHo back catalogue, probably nothing not already encountered. And hopefully thought-provoking.
I enjoyed the author‘s exploration of the gender reversals that came with the Power - and how society reacted to men being exposed to the realities that all women live with.

This is a grittier, darker read than you might be expecting 😳 I‘ve seen it billed as a YA novel, but I think that‘s just a knee-jerk reaction to so many of the characters being teenage girls. It‘s definitely one for mature readers. And, as much as I enjoyed it, I will warn you: it ain‘t subtle 😮‍💨 Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-power-naomi-alderman/

The alternate history is powerful, passionate, and engrossing. The characters are vivid and well drawn, with likeable sides and dislikable sides. Sometimes brutal, but always interesting, this story explores the implications of power, both physical and psychological, and really, the nature of humanity. A stunning book, really, with spots of dark humour to keep it from being entirely bleak.

This was a good read.
Women & girls start manifesting powers, they attempt to adapt to society as society is hesitant to adapt to them.

It‘s told in a very interesting way and is bookended by a conversation between 2 fictional authors seething with day to day sexism (would you say that to me if I was a man? Flipped on its head)

I can see how this would work well as a limited series, so I‘ll be checking that out too.

The first episodes of the television adaption of Naomi Alderman‘s 2016 feminist sci-fi novel “The Power” have dropped on Amazon Prime. The first season will be nine episodes. The first three premiered yesterday. The series is so good! The music is 🔥.

CarolynM I loved the book, but I‘m not sure I want to watch the series. 2y
BookBosomed1 @CarolynM That‘s fair. Any particular reason why? 2y

Alderman's range is so impressive This is a big departure from her earlier works. I was fascinated by the premise of the book - what if women started getting the ability to control electricity when they hit puberty? How would that effect the social & political dynamics around the world & most importantly does power corrupt? The book could have been better around trans rep. Overall a great read

After this book, I‘m going to look up content warnings before I acquire the items. If you‘re planning on reading this, please know there are several instances of SA. Blech. This book started out fascinating; what if women one day learned that they could shoot electricity out of their hands? It‘s a cool premise and the characters are really interesting! But then, it devolves into a gross mess. Blech again. #pop23 #booksintotvshowsormovies

Sometimes the best way to highlight something in society is to reframe it in a way that radically shifts the perspective. In this book, women gain electrical abilities, able to taze with a touch and a thought. Abused women stop putting up with it. Women who have to smile and nod and step to the side, no longer have to. The risks women consider going to a car in the dark? Now it's men with the risk. Well written and thought provoking.

You may already know this, but my husband and I got married in a small secondhand bookstore four years ago. Our tradition (hindered only by 2020) is to go book shopping there every year on our anniversary. This stack mostly represents my used book haul from our special place, although we did make the impulsive decision to go to Barnes and Noble, as well, where we treated ourselves to one brand new book each and I chose String Follow for myself.

It's more than So-so but not a Pick..
I loved the premises of the story and how it started, but at the end it was a bit too chaotic for me and some things felt rushed.
And, apparently, a tv series is on its way on Prime Video 🤓

This book delves into questions of human nature and power, weaving together several characters' stories with other, short interludes, creating a tapestry depicting both the best and worst of humanity through the lens of one big "what if" question. It is masterful and thought provoking, while still being absolutely captivating.

Its been hard to review this one. I was excited to read it but really went in not knowing too much about it. This book asks the question, would a world be more peaceful, safer and kinder if women had the power? Because one day in this story women suddenly get THE POWER, an ability to harm, torture or kill all at their fingertips. We follow several characters and how they navigate this new world. ⬇️

Tera66 It started out really strong with the character driven stories, but in the end it got more into politics of it all and it lost some of my interest. 3 stars. (I usually don't post TW, but this has some rape scenes) 4y
FelinesAndFelonies I have The End of Men coming in the mail. This sounds like a similar premise. Stacked! 4y
Reggie Yeah, I got bummed out by this book. Not because women got power but because I thought they would be better than us. Also, I really liked the mob story line. 4y
Tera66 @FelinesAndFelonies I hadn't heard about that one, adding that to my TBR now.😊 4y
