Omg it‘s been so long! I‘m currently reading Children of Blood and Bone on a whim, but I‘ve just organized a small December tbr stack to get me back in the swing of things; I guess working 70+ hours a week will make time melt🙃 but I‘m excited to finally have downtime and to get a bunch of reading done📚

tpixie Happy Reading!!! 📖 1w

I actually listened to this because I got my copy from goodwill and it had copious notes all through it that I thought might distract me. The narration was superb. The author does a great job with the backstories, and getting you to empathize even with the characters who you dislike in the beginning. There were some things I didn't see coming. I will read more by this author.

The last couple of weeks have been insane. I finished Children of Blood and Bone on February 22nd, and somehow I'm just now reviewing it. I guess better late than never.

I really wish I picked this up when all the hype still surrounded it. It‘s definitely worth all the excitement. I really enjoyed it.

#TBRPile ? Zélie remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. This book was entertaining overall but for me personally not my favorite. It‘s not that I didn‘t really enjoy it, and there was nothing I specifically disliked about it but I guess at the time I read it the story didn‘t stick with me like I thought it would. Not sure what it is about it. However this book is full of action and a pretty unique magic system. I also liked the world building and especially liked Amari‘s character/ arc.

Finally got back into a mood to read fantasy and decided to finally break this open. Absolutely loving the story so far and it‘s really fun to read a fantasy story that takes place somewhere other than Europe. Just finished the chapter where Zelie‘s home burned to the ground. Love how the author came up for a way for the people with magic to be the subjugated class. Really cool take.

Stop what you‘re doing and read this. Black femme writer, fantasy series that incorporates African mythology, magic— you name it, it‘s here. Also loved the fitting commentary on things like colorism, racism, classism... such a relevant work of art that forces you to think critically while enjoying a typical fantasy book. That‘s the dream! 8/10

Kind of your typical “chosen one”
Narrative, with lots of action and strong (if a little melodramatic) characters. My favorite part was the overlay of racism and the strong BLM focus, even though it was fantasy. The audiobook was great!

I had stacks of books until I bought 2 new bookcases. Now the biggest bookcase is my TBR. My Kindle is also “stacked”.

The first book is tagged. The first shelf holds my #LitsyAtoZ TBR. The second is books pulled for #ReadingEurope2020.

Got this on audiobook and took me a minute to get into the story but I still fell in love with the adventure pretty quickly. The narrator, Bahni Turpin, is incredible and brings each character to life in a way that builds dimension to the story like I didn‘t expect. Would absolutely recommend the audiobook. Already downloading the sequel from the library.

Children of Blood and Bone is visceral, spin chilling yet amazing window into the a world where magic has not just disappears but was ripped away and all the magic users destroyed because of one man's pain and fear. This is an oddly beautiful result of one women's feelings of despair at the violence of everyday life. Honestly gave me the feels and goose bumps. 4.5/5 Stars.

Book 30
I listened to this book; the voice acting was terrific! Unfortunately I never felt invested in the story. Magic/fantasy isn't my genre, but maybe I was just too mentally distracted. Not for me (but you don't have to take my word for it. 😉).

Children of Blood and Bone is typically not my genre of books that I gravitate towards. I was pleasantly surprised as I read through the first chapter that it was definitely a page turner. The main character Zelie was aspiring with her constant faith and courage. Even when things seemed to be going so wrong she managed to continue to cleave to the hope that things would change.

I am so ready to read the sequel "Children of Virtue and Vengeance".

Imaginative and exciting, this book openly pays homage to teen fantasies that came before, brandished with an earnest, real-world message about oppression and the power of Black Lives.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I didn't like this book.
Zelie the protagonist, wasn't what I thought she would be. She was supposed to be the hero, but wasn't heroic to me. I didn't feel much character growth from her. I enjoyed Amari, the princess, so much; she showed up & out, & had the most character growth. Tzain, Zelie's brother was also a good character, and I felt he needed a bigger presence in the book. Inan, the princes was horrible!

WomanistBibliophile Oh I love Zélie! The character development in the second book for both her and Amari is very interesting 5y
essence_dionne @WomanistBibliophile interesting.. how so? I don't plan to read the second, but want to hear as many opinions as possible 5y

Here are the books I know I am going to read in October. Not sure how spooky they are and I will probably add some more titles just not sure yet which ones.

samantharoberts I‘m currently reading Children of Blood and Bone too! It‘s not very scary but I would still classify it as Halloween-appropriate. I like it so far, enjoy! 5y
TheSpineView @samanthagutt That is good to know because I have been wanting to o read for a while now. 5y
alisiakae Great stack! I'm reading Akata Witch right now, also by Okorafor, and definitely has some spooky undertones. It's a great story of teen friendship and learning to use their magic, but the serial killer subplot is definitely creepy. 5y

Believe the hype! I couldn‘t put this book down and can‘t wait to read book two. I was excited to learn Lucasfilm is involved in the adaptation. I loved the strong female characters, themes, and use of Yoruba language and reference in the book. Adeuemi is a superb storyteller. Make sure you read the author‘s message and manuscript notes at the end of the book.

Yes please! Give me the next one! This was such a great read I CANNOT wait for the next book in the series to come out in December. So impressed with the world that was created, but also the fact that Tomi used this book as also a metaphor for the real pain, suffering and fear black people in America face. A brilliant book that I give five stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #youngadult #fantasy #moreplease #femalelead #womanauthor

About this book: Oh my God! I came to this book after reading Okorafor's Who fears death, a sort of those "you might like this". And I LOVED IT. The characters and the story were exactly what I was looking for and the action was so fast and exciting tat I atuall screamed "NOOOO" when I got to the end.
