From New York Times bestselling author Gail Carriger comes the delightful sequel to Imprudence. Accidentally abandoned! All alone in Singapore, proper Miss Primrose Tunstell must steal helium to save her airship, the Spotted Custard, in a scheme involving a lovesick werecat and a fake fish tail. When she uncovers rumors of a new kind of vampire, Prim and the Custard crew embark on a mission to Peru. There, they encounter airship pirates and strange atmospheric phenomena, and are mistaken for representatives of the Spanish Inquisition. Forced into extreme subterfuge (and some rather ridiculous outfits) Prim must also answer three of life's most challenging questions: Can the perfect book club give a man back his soul? Will her brother ever stop wearing his idiotic velvet fez?And can the amount of lard in Christmas pudding save an entire species? Book 3 in the Custard Protocol series. I reread books 1 & 2 this past fall and enjoyed them but I got a little bored rereading this one. The pace felt really slow, so I ended up skimming quite a bit. But still a pick for depicting characters living life as they want and pushing back against repressive societal norms.

I forgot how completely over the top this series is but I still find the world and its characters magical. I love how inclusive everything is and that found family will love you no matter what others outside will do. I especially enjoyed the focus being on Prim versus Rue and can see a glimpse into what the next Percy slanted book will look like.

113, audio

Probably the most unique coming of age story I've read, but still a coming of age story.

Cute, but not as enjoyable as the last two were. Still a pick.

Rue is a much better side character than a main character and as the ship and crew continue to sail around the world, with their missions not so subtly manipulated by Lady Maccon and the Finishing School graduates, this is not a dull story! Fat sucking vampires, a developing romance blossoming into love, and scientific discovery makes this a joy. 3.5/5 stars; read If you like airships and unique takes on vampires

4/5⭐ Rue is so much better as a side character, and the twins are so much better as narrators. This book also introduces something closer to resembling an actual plot.

I ADORE Percy, his and Prim's relationship, and Tasherit's tassels.

The very, very strong found family dynamic explored in this book left me squeeing with happiness and satisfaction. The characters and relationships were at their finest in this book.

Really enjoyed this. You do need to have read the rest of the series though to really follow it. Also if anyone has any suggestions for how I can better arrange my Carriger collection let me know. I like to put series in order, the the size mismatch offends me.

AlaMich The size difference in series irritates me as well. 😠 5y
jpmcwisemorgan I have them all as ebooks. I think the only way to solve this is to get them in hardback if they‘re available that way. 5y

After reading the original, it took me awhile to get invested in this spin-off series...and now I can‘t believe it‘s almost at an end. And with a cliffhanger ending like that, I‘ll have to pick up the last installment sooner rather than later. I love how this series has expanded on the shifter/vampire story ideas with different types of shifters and species of vampire all dependent on the local history and environment they originate from.

In first reading I appreciated the queerness of Competence. It is difficult to place modern identity in an historical context, and the attempts are at times clumsy. Ultimately, representation matters more, and overall the whole is still a noble effort on rereading.

Thank you so much for this fantastic #Makerswap package @theresidentromantic
It is wonderful. The felt succulent kit is great; I've been obsessed with felting lately. I may have squealed a little when I saw the needlepoint. It is perfect and I love everything. Great smelling candle too. Thank you!

And thank you @LibrarianRyan for hosting (I hope you like what I made you).

I think this might be my favorite Custard Protocol Book so far. Primrose is one of my favorite characters and I loved reading from her perspective. The plot wanders a bit just like a lot of Carriger‘s books because it is really about the characters and their stories. A cute easy read with a f/f romance.

This one was interesting because it was from Prim's and Percy's point of view. The group starts out in Singapore and heads to South America to save a weird species of vampire. And Carriger drops a big surprise at the end.

Mehso-so

I love Miss Gail's work and I did enjoy this one but had to put it as "so-so" since for a book that's under 400 pages, it took me two months to read. I just couldn't get into it. I think I miss Alexia and Co. too much ? that being said, I do look forward to seeing what the next book holds. Hopefully, they spend more time in London ????

Fun book, but I needed more plot and less banter. I don't know why but I can't seem to get into this series like the author's previous ones.

The way words are getting incorrectly hyphenated in this kindle book is bugging me. I read a lot of books on my kindle and don't recall seeing this before - maybe an odd one now and then, but it's frequent in this book.

heikemarie Maybe I‘m missing something - can you explain why they‘re incorrectly hyphenated? It looks like they‘re hyphenated when they break over a line, which I‘ve always thought was correct... the font is so big it seems to make more sense to hyphenate rather than push the whole word to the next line. Again, I‘m probably missing something! 6y
CSeydel @heikemarie they should be hyphenated by the syllable. So for instance, “some-thing” rather than “so-mething” 6y
heikemarie @CSeydel gotcha! 6y
See All 12 Comments
CSeydel Un-known and pock-et. 6y
CSeydel @heikemarie Here‘s an interesting post discussing English pronunciation vs hyphenation: https://sesquiotic.com/2013/01/09/hyphe-nation-hyphen-ation/ 6y
JoyNorstrom Oh my! That‘s terrible. It would definitely irritate me too. 6y
heikemarie @CSeydel I think I recall this from intro to linguistics in college, haha. I just assumed that the book was being auto-hyphenated as the font increased, not that someone or the program is incorrectly parsing syllables. Still annoying if it‘s a rule you‘re used to! 6y
heikemarie @CSeydel as a specific example from the above, unknown is not incorrectly split in front of or behind an actual syllable break, it just is split where the space on the line ended regardless. 6y
CouronneDhiver Does it get any better if you change the size of the font/print? 6y
julesG @CouronneDhiver Same thought here. I don't think it's the book, it's just the Kindle breaking up the word at the end of the line. And the machine has only been told to add a hyphen/dash if that happens, but not to make sure that grammar rules are to be observed. 6y
Amie @julesG @CouronneDhiver it's definitely a Kindle quirk and not the way the words would appear in a print book. It does change if I adjust the font size - with smaller font there are fewer hyphenated words but there are still some. It's just weird because I don't normally see it in Kindle books (and I always use this font size). 6y
Amie @heikemarie it is just automatically happening because of the font size, but I don't normally see it like this on my Kindle books (and I always use this font size), so there's something weird with how the formatting is programmed. Unknown is incorrect: it has 2 syllables un/known and should be split between the n and k at a line break. 6y

I'm baacckk! After a few weeks of caving into my depression, I'm trying to crawl back out of it and into my social media presence and crafting. I've been reading, still, but not what I should've been reading! I owe my #LMPBC group an apology, I'll get those books out to you asap. What really did it was yesterday, whoever posted a review for this book, THANK YOU. I haven't been actually, legitimately excited about a thing in about a month.

CouronneDhiver That sounds very difficult ... Welcome back 🙂 6y
vkois88 First, adorable purse. Bc it was important to get that out of the way. Second, don't feel bad about not being around. Depression is an awful thing to battle, and it is so much more important to deal with that than worry about books and a social media presence. A lot of us deal with the same thing (as well as many other issues), so we all understand. Take care of YOU! And enjoy that book ❤❤ *hugs* All that being said, we are glad you are back 6y
