Happy anniversary, for those who celebrate.
The classic graphic novel providing a darker take on the superhero genre through the lens of political and nuclear turmoil.
Alternate History ✨ Nihilism ✨ Doom
For fans of The Boys and the darker DC comics
1st time round, I wasn‘t ready for the “deconstructed” superhero novel. Since it was released, & now I‘ve just reread it, I think The Boys & Kickass made the concept more enjoyable. It starts compelling & has some interesting parts (I support Moore‘s politics) but it sags in the middle & loses its way until Moore pulls it back with the climax. His characters are interesting & the art is great but the backstory segments between parts are often dull
Really proud of this article about race and theology in Watchmen and its spinoffs. Check it out:

Very dark and definitely not for the faint hearted. I loved the variety of characters and their dark, twisted ideologies and backstories. The overall plot was mysterious and fun, with fighting and flsshbacks, it was an exciting story even until the end, when the revelations and 'villain' is revealed. I think my favourite character was Rorschach, I loved the prison part.
This one had been sitting on my shelf for years, waiting for me to have enough time and dedication to start reading. I truly wish I had done it sooner. An intricate plot with very little filler, complex characters, and decent art - it‘s all there. Time to rewatch the movie and the HBO show.
#Scarathlon Daily Photo Prompt Day 12 #Grave
Watchmen opens with the death of the Comedian. The graphic novel then unfolds the truth behind his death. A notable scene sees some of his former Minutemen team members gathering at his grave for the funeral.

New Author Fantasy baseball episode is out now! If it sounds really dorky it's because it is. Still fun though.

It‘s strange to revisit this. I am in a reading slump , too many books too little time , not finishing much. I read this in the olden days have never watched the movie. A little graphic storytelling usually gets me going again. It‘s amazing, it doesn‘t seem as dark as I remember maybe it has something to do with how things are now.Who watches the Watchmen?

I‘m not a big comic reader, if I do my preference is toward a completed story graphic novel format. This is my small collection. My first intro to the genre was Watchmen, so unfortunately most of my subsequent reads have paled in comparison. The only series that has come close for me is Saga, but I wish the series would finish up for resolution.
Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed this book, but I struggled to grow an attachment to any of the characters, their motives and beliefs were lost on me and I just never managed to really support any of them.
On the other hand, it was a pleasant surprise to have a 'superhero' story without the cliched happy ending. The story itself was gritty and engaging.
Overall a good book, but I don't think I was the right person for the book.
All right, listen...I know this is, like, my 4th reading of this book but it is just that damn good. I 100% guarantee there will be a 5th re-read within the year...There is so much to love here.
Bought this one a while back for #1001Books list. Younger son read it and adopted it (his quilt made by my mom, for him). I had to search for it in his room. He wanted me to read it before he left for college so we could discuss. It‘s a clever take on the superheroes concept and has meta storylines. Hence the pick, although I‘m really not a reader of this type of graphic novel as my son is.
Trying out the tv show.

extremely refreshing to read a graphic novel 😌 love me a good alternate universe cold war. excited to finally get all the jokes and feel qualified to use dr manhattan memes!
Just finished my reread of this and it is still so prescient in this day and age. So morally ambiguous and deeply layered.
I am loving graphic novels lately :)

I‘m so glad my hubby wanted me to read this one. It was so good!!!

I am really enjoying this book. I am hoping to finish it in the next few days. But I have to say I hate Dr. Manhattan!

Oh my, this was just so fantastic! I had heard great things about this graphic novel and was super excited to read it. It surpassed all my expectations. If you are into superheroes, you really need to read it! This is one I will definitely read again and again

I own this graphic novel which is on the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die. It is a murder mystery, an alternate world sci-fi epic and a psychological study of power and corruption in the form of a comic. I need to read this soon!
I have let this one sit for way too long. I‘ve got a plan now :)

HBO and Damon Lindelof absolutely knocked it out of the park with their Watchmen series. If you haven't read the graphic novel, what's wrong with you! But if you have, this is essential viewing.

This showed up in #PrimeReading probably because of the new HBO series I haven't seen. It's a gritty, graphic, harsh commentary on humanity and society. Oddly enough, I feel a little better about the current state of affairs, since it isn't nearly as bad by comparison. Could be a helluva lot worse. Still a sobering read. Also, I found Rorchsach less endearing this time than I did when I saw the movie years ago.

After years of recommending it to him, my boyfriend is FINALLY reading Watchmen!
Yay! Clean slate! Please excuse my absence of late. I've spent the last month contemplating my reading journey for 2020, and looking back over last year's journey. I hope to post a little about my reading goals for this year while looking back at what I did and didn't accomplish last year. Spent some time going back over my journal this week compiling stats and reflecting. Also hope to catch up on some reviews soon. 🙂 (Tagged current read.)
Who watches the watchmen?
Hubby keeps telling me to read this (even though we are in the middle of the series on HBO) Maybe starting this soon :)
My son and daughter convinced me to read this book before I watched the HBO series. I had already watched the movie, so I had some backstory. I read comics as a kid, this is my first graphic novel. I really can appreciate the combination of art and dialog. The author‘s comments on politics culture are great. There is a story within a story....in the background you often see a guy reading a comic book about pirates- wild
Rorschach's Bean Juice: Break into Nite Owl's place (Not hard, cheap lock.) Get hungry, open can. No need to heat. ⠀
⠀
The HBO series inspired me to re-read this again. (That show is bonkers, but I'm loving it.) Usually, I prefer graphic novels in print, but I've been enjoying this one on Hoopla. Reading it by pane really gives me an appreciation for Dave Gibbons' artwork.⠀

01. Watchmen; Frankisstein

03. Pumpkins!

This was just not for me. I had a really hard time following how all the characters related to one another, and I can't say I really understand the ending.
My husband loved this and has been bugging me to read it.. man I am struggling with it. Not my genre for sure and there are sooo many people!
Holy. Loved it! Great first episode! I'm super psyched for this series now. 🤘
Anyone else watch the premier of #Watchmen tonight?
I read this #GraphicNovel for #Booked2019 and because it‘s on the list of #1001books but I didn‘t fell for the genre. For me, looking at pictures is way more difficult than to just read, all those images soon dazzle me. And then it is about superheroes... in which I‘m not interested at all. However, I was intrigued and it kept me reading on. Never again though 🤪
WHOOOOO is awesome? @JoScho is! 😀 Owl always appreciate her #ManicMonday posts! 🦉
📖 - “Watchmen” (One of the main characters is code named “Nite Owl” 🦉)
🎥 - “Labyrinth” (I suspect this and Harry Potter will be very popular choices today! 😂)
🎶 - “The Crow, The Owl, and the Dove” by Nightwish (as an aside, symphonic metal bands like Nightwish make a great soundtrack for fantasy novels! 🤘)

1. Doctor Manhattan
2. 😡
3. Quantum mechanics fascinates me, but Dr. Manhattan‘s character is so nihilistic, so cold, so removed and so egotistically still human, I roll my eyes at him every time I reread. Even less lovable than Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. Heroes set aside their own agendas, Doctor Manhattan chooses to disengage. What bought him in the first place!? brain
I have so many thoughts about this graphic novel but not sure if I have the right one just yet. There‘s no real hero in a book full of supposed heroes and I admire the realism that the author brings in the characters — the flaws, the raw humanity... I can‘t do it justice on my first reading of all twelve chapters but hoping to revisit it in the future in the hopes of picking up anything I missed.
I totally recommend this graphic novel!
“... but you yourself refuse to consider my viewpoint, letting your emotions blind you. Look at yourself— angry, shouting... if you‘d only relax enough to see the whole continuum, life‘s pattern or lack of one, then you‘d understand my perspective. You‘re deliberately shutting out understanding, as if you‘re afraid; as if you‘re too delicate... I think you‘re avoiding something.”
I feel for Laurie and her struggles with her upbringing & identity
