Playing Favorites: Gifted Education and the Disruption of Community | Mara Sapon-Shevin
18 posts
Playing Favorites examines the ways in which gifted education disrupts the classroom community, deskills regular classroom teachers, limits their ability and willingness to meet individual needs, and impairs the creation of a climate of inclusion and acceptance of difference. Sapon-Shevin shows here that current models of gifted education are elitist and meritocratic, treating some children, not just differently than others, but better; and that in large urban districts, gifted education programs are often racist as well. By creating and funding gifted programs, the author contends, schools engage in a form of educational triage, serving those children for whom inadequate programming and educational failure would not be acceptable while maintaining the status quo for the majority of the school population. This book provides support for teachers, parents, and administrators who have found themselves caught in the struggle of insuring an appropriate education for some children without sacrificing the good of all. Incorporating the words of teachers, parents, and students, as well as related research and theory, this book analyzes the relationship between diversity, community, and social justice. Sapon-Shevin challenges the reader to reconsider ways in which schools can meet individual educational needs while preserving communities of learners as well as the commitment to the education of all children. Finally, the book extends the challenge and assurance that we need not choose between quality education for some and mediocre education for all."

At the halfway mark of 2024, I‘ve been taking stock of my reading so far this year. Above are my favorites. So many good ones!

I set goals of 100 books and 35,000 pages, which I‘ve bumped up to 120 books and 40,000 since I‘m ahead! From January through June, I finished 71 books, 25 of which were TBR from my own shelves. I was aiming for half the books I read this year to be from my owned TBR, so I‘ll have to step up that goal a bit, as well.

Caterina I loved An Altar in the World, and I LOVED The Cross and the Lynching Tree! I read it for seminary, and it had a big impact on me, and I especially think about it every Good Friday. Adding some of the rest of these to my TBR now! 6mo
BarbaraJean @Caterina An Altar in the World was such a breath of fresh air for me! I love her perspective on spiritual practice. I read The Cross and the Lynching Tree with my Education for Ministry group, just before Easter this year. It has completely changed the way I view Good Friday now. SUCH a good book, but also so difficult to wrestle with. We had some deep, rich, hard conversations as we discussed it. 6mo
Caterina I feel the same way about both books! And what wonderful timing, reading The Cross and the Lynching Tree right around Good Friday. I've considered reading it as a Lenten practice each year; maybe next year I'll do that. 6mo

Waiting until the last minute to post just in case I finished a masterpiece today, lol.
My #top21in21 books feel more eclectic than past years - and this is the first time an author has been featured twice in my end of year list.
Becky Chambers wins the year - I read all of her available books and two made my list with 5 stars 🤩
I‘m pleased with the number of nonfiction titles, but am still resolved to read more in the new year!

#my21of21
My top 21 of 21 includes Sparks Like Stars which I couldn‘t get in the grid. Interesting that all 4 of my #chunksterchallenge books made the list. Hopefully next year will be as good.

GinaKButler The Other Boleyn Girl makes me happy! Such great picks! 3y
Kelly326 @GinaKButler I did notice a lot of our picks are the same! 😀 3y

I was going to hold out until the 31st to do this, but I couldn‘t resist after seeing all of your lists! This was so hard! Of all my 5 star reads I had to cut about 15. It‘s been a really great reading year! I‘m surprised how many NF made my list.
My top two are probably Once There We‘re Wolves and The Seed Keeper, but ask me again later and I might say something different. 📚❤️🤣 Best NF- How the Word Is Passed.

If you haven‘t played yet, tag!

squirrelbrain I‘ve had this one stacked on Scribd for ages, just never got round to it…. 3y
bnp Still working on my graphics, but The seed keeper & A psalm for the wild-built both made my list. 3y

Nute Fantastic reading this year! Gosh, am I ever excited about The Seed Keeper! I love the time that you gave to reading about our feathered friends. 🦅🪶♥️ I am discovering so many new books because of everyone‘s choices. Reading through these posts is like a Sunday morning heavenly literary smorgasbord from some of my most favorite people on the planet! Such a delight!💕 (edited) 3y
Soubhiville @Nute I agree, I‘ve loved seeing everyone‘s posts so much! 3y
NovelGirl82 I had to read Henrietta Lacks for my undergrad medical law class and I really enjoyed it! Very interesting story. I‘m glad you did too! 3y
Christine Amazing collection! The Clint Smith might be my favorite nonfiction of the year, too. 3y
Bookwormjillk Salvage The Bones was on my list too. Thank you #AuthorAMonth 3y
Soubhiville @Bookwormjillk yes! Thanks to #AAM I read all but one of her books this year! And every one was excellent. 3y
Ruthiella Great list! My list would change too probably with time. It‘s interesting to see after a few years what books and stories stick with me and still incite emotions and others I completely forget. 3y
Deblovestoread Such a great list! 3y
marleed Great list! I had to cull some 5*s from my list, as well. What a wonderful problem to have! 3y
BarbaraBB Wolves is an absolute favorite of mine too this year. 3y
Hooked_on_books I am utterly delighted to see both Damnation Spring and We Ride Upon Sticks on your list! Both of those books are really special to me and I‘m happy to see them uplifted. Great list! 3y
LeahBergen I‘m trying to hold off making my list until next week, too 😆 3y
merelybookish I loved Here Comes the Sun when I read it a few years ago. Never felt like it got the recognition it deserves. 3y
Centique @Hooked_on_books We Ride Upon Sticks is really special to me too! I will have to get to Damnation Spring soon. (edited) 3y
Chelsea.Poole Great list! I love that you added the three books about birds. They‘ve all been on my list to read, so I‘m glad to see they made your top 21 🦅 3y
Cinfhen You caved!!!! Great list!!!! 3y
MaleficentBookDragon I didn't read it this year, but Into the Drowning Deep is one of my favorite creature books. 3y

CoffeeAndABook Thanks for the tag 🙋🏼‍♀️ How‘re you doing? Keeping up a life with lower digital time? 6y
raelaschoenherr I‘m doing well! Yep, still not doing too much social media. It‘s been good for me! Sadly I also haven‘t had time to read as much lately 😫 How are you? 6y
CoffeeAndABook @raelaschoenherr Hi!! I had family visiting from the States this past week so I didn‘t get to check Litsy for a while... am still exhausted from the visit. I LOVED seeing them but I let myself get so stressed!! 🙈 Other than that I‘m fine! I‘m sorry to hear you have less time to read. That‘s unacceptable!!! 😱 is there any chance that will change anytime soon?? 6y
See All 12 Comments
raelaschoenherr @CoffeeAndABook Sorry things got a little hectic for you! But I‘m glad the visit went well. I hope I‘ll be able to read more soon! I think I‘ll just need to be more intentional about it. It‘s been a pretty busy stretch of time lately, so by the time I have free time, my brain is fried and I‘ve only felt like putting TV reruns on...so I should cut back on that :) 6y
CoffeeAndABook @raelaschoenherr Oh I totally understand!!! My best time for reading is definitely in the morning and these past few years I've been lucky to find jobs where I work afternoons/evenings. After work I hardly ever read, eyes and brain just won't function anymore 😝 What reruns are you on? I'm always on the lookout for new series to watch! (edited) 6y
raelaschoenherr @CoffeeAndABook I love Friends, The Office, Parks & Rec, and New Girl! All god for rewatching :) 6y
CoffeeAndABook @raelaschoenherr Yesss! I love all of the above shows, except Parks & Rec, which I‘ve never found here in Germany. I‘d have to add the Gilmore Girls to that list and maybe Seinfeld but have never found anything like Friends in terms of humor & emotional attachment 💓 As to more recent TV, I‘ve been enjoying The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Frankie & Grace. Oh and One Day at a Time - have you seen those? 6y
raelaschoenherr @CoffeeAndABook I‘ve seen some of GG and Seinfeld. And I really enjoyed Maisel!! I haven‘t seen Frankie and Grace or One Day at a Time. I forgot to mention Brooklyn 99 too! The Good Place is great, and I‘m a few episodes into Killing Eve. And I love a lot of Masterpiece miniseries (Victoria, Poldark, Grantchester, Les Miserables) 6y
CoffeeAndABook @raelaschoenherr Ooh yes, of course - Poldark 😃 I‘ll keep my eyes open for the other miniseries!! Give Frankie & Grace a shot 😉 Hope you‘re doing well & things are winding down so you get to do some fun reading!! 6y
raelaschoenherr @CoffeeAndABook Wow, that‘s so fun!! I hadn‘t seen it 😆 6y
raelaschoenherr @CoffeeAndABook And thanks, I actually have been able to do more reading lately, which has been great! 6y

Most of my favorites of 2018 were non-fiction, it's hard to pick just one. A Square Meal, I Want My MTV, Presidents of War and The Rise and Fall of The Dinosaurs were the best.

A professional photographer came to my library‘s Summer Reading kick-off event & caught one of my favorite littles in the wild!

This is Reggie. He loves reading & is a mouth-breather & I love him so much. He‘s seriously the cutest. Just look at the way he‘s tilting the books to look at them to see if he‘s interested instead of taking them off the shelves needlessly. What a good listener. What a beautiful rule-follower. What a nerd. My heart. 😍

candority Adorable! “Is a mouth breather” in your description made me laugh out loud. I hope he loves reading for the rest of his life! 6y
monalyisha @candority It‘s one of those things that I know responsible adults in his life should try to discourage/help him with because it‘s only cute when they‘re little... but OMG IS IT SO CUTE! He‘s so un-self-conscious & so earnest! (edited) 6y

MelAnn That is so me! 7y
carys14 This is the exact premise of my bff‘s book podcast Three Books. The idea started as a “get to know you” for the library staff where she works and she and a coworker found it so interesting how most people found it difficult to list just three books with most needing additional qualifiers. 7y
