Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag
Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag | Rob Sanders
40 posts | 26 read | 13 to read
The very first picture book about the remarkable and inspiring story of the Gay Pride Flag! In this deeply moving and empowering true story, young readers will trace the life of the Gay Pride Flag, from its beginnings in 1978 with social activist Harvey Milk and designer Gilbert Baker to its spanning of the globe and its role in today's world. Award-winning author Rob Sanders's stirring text, and acclaimed illustrator Steven Salerno's evocative images, combine to tell this remarkable - and undertold - story. A story of love, hope, equality, and pride. PRAISE FOR PRIDE! A Junior Library Guild Selection "An uplifting introduction to the symbol of the Rainbow Flag . . . Vibrant and lively . . . Recommended for all collections." - School Library Journal "A biography LGBTQ rights activists and allies can proudly share with children . . . a hope-filled ode to the rainbow flag."- Kirkus Reviews " . . . ebullient . . . an age-appropriate introduction . . ."- Shelf Awareness "Salerno's strong art has a colorful seventies vibe . . . There is value here."- Booklist "Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and The Rainbow Flag beautifully tells the history of both Uncle Harvey's dream and his collaboration with Gilbert Baker to create a global symbol of equality and inclusion. This book tells a history that all children will cherish, and will inspire the next generation of hope givers, our world's youth"- Stuart Milk, Founder and President of the Harvey Milk Foundation "Harvey Milk and Gilbert Baker showed LGBTQ people that they should be proud of who they are and who they love. That is exactly what we do at The Trevor Project for LGBTQ youth in crisis. We're thrilled that more young people will learn the story behind the original rainbow flag."- Amit Paley, Trevor Project CEO and Executive Director

This is a very educational and relevant book with a lot of historical information to provide children with. It is unbiased and very informative. It shares the history, the movement, and how it looks today.

This is an inspiring and hopeful story of Harvey Milk and the symbol that he created that is now known as the pride flag. They displayed the flag in a match, asking for equality and to live and love as they please. He was assassinated by someone who had opposing beliefs. This was not the end of Harvey‘s movement and message.

For several of reasons, I haven't posted my own BINGO updates in a while. I finally finished recently with the tagged. Congratulations to everyone who has completed their cards (some more than once), and to those still working on it or deciding to start right now: I look forward to seeing your reads.

I'm looking ahead to 2023's cars now. Does anyone have fun prompt suggestions they'd like to see?

Kenyazero @stevesbookstuf1 haha that's fair! Happy Thanksgiving! 1w
PuddleJumper Looks great! I've really enjoyed the prompts you've used. Wouldn't mind a bit of ace rep next time (I have a few books I impulse bought) 1w
coffees Ohh i need to see if i made any progress, ive just been reading xD as for prompts, maybe something more specific to other letters of LGBTQ, i feel like the prompts are open-ended but maybe more T and after (the I, As, etc) 1w

Last month, We Are Family hosted a queer youth prom in Charleston, SC. My fellow clinic escorts and I were proud to be part of this magical night! I so wish there was something like this when I was in Highschool. Let‘s make sure we affirm and protect queer youth today. Happy Pride everyone!

I have attended Charlotte‘s Pride Festival every year since we moved here. The attendance this weekend was INCREDIBLE!

So amazing, in fact, that my social anxiety started spiking in the crowds. More than 200,000 people attended this weekend. 🌈 ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

After the parade, we left earlier than usual and hit up B&N and read the tagged book instead of walking through the festival.

AmyG Yeah, that‘s way too crowded. 3y
alisiakae @AmyG Bad for me, but great for Charlotte! Record-breaking attendance this weekend. Which is such a wonderful thing considering my state has had its fair share of anti-LGBT press in recent years. 🥰 3y
MoonWitch94 Woah. No way. B&N was the better choice. But yay for Charlotte 3y
BlameJennyJane I just LOVE hearing about how big Pride is getting, especially in southern cities. When I lived in Jacksonville (until 10 years ago) there would be like 100 people there and most of those were Unitarians. 🤣 That said, I‘m with you on the crowds and anxiety. I‘ve had a few festival meltdowns this summer myself. “I‘m good,” is code for “let‘s go” with my husband. 3y
AmyG Yes...I was thinking how wonderful it was that all these people came out in support. 3y

I find it interesting how this flag came about. In no way do I agree with what it stands for.

alisiakae What do you mean when you say you don't agree with what it stands for? It happens to be PRIDE festival in my city this weekend, so the rainbow flag is everywhere. 🌈Our local PRIDE parade draws in more than 10,000 people each year, it's fantastic! 3y

Pride The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag is a NF written by Rob Sanders and illustrated by Steven Salerno. This books tells the amazing life of Harvey Milk and the work he did for the LGBTQ+ community. It tells of his work along with the I legacy he left behind. This is a great book to use during Pride Month for your students, especially in October if you live in Orlando when Orlando Pride is celebrated.

This website is a great resource for lesson plans that are focused around Pride. When reading this book, you can satisfy ESOL strategy 14 and UDL 2.1 by using simpler language. This is an amazing book to use in your classroom!

This brief history of Harvey Milk‘s dream for equality for gay people is a great introduction. It briefly touches on his work to change laws, his work with Gilbert Baker who created the first Rainbow Flag, as well as Milk‘s and George Moscone‘s assassinations in San Francisco. I like how the story ends with how the work for equality has carried on, but I wish marriage equality was specifically named.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Informative with beautiful, engaging illustrations that bring to life the history of the pride flag. This is not text heavy, so it makes a great story time read for kids with small attention spans. There is a more detailed section at the back of the book with a timeline and resources.

Reggie There was this back episode of the Rachel Maddoe show I was listening to today where Joy subs in for her. But she started with this man in the 1700‘s who was in charge of the Prussian army and he was kicked out because he was gay. Well he ends up in America and gets in touch with George Washington who asks him to train his army because they‘re young and inexperienced. He trains them and they win and he wrote his tactics in a book called the Blue 4y
Reggie Book which was called that because it was written on blue paper. But many of those tactics are still used today in our military. Also later on he writes a letter to George Washington saying he wanted to help so much because he wanted a country to call his own. After they won, years later, they grant him citizenship. I plan to read only books with an LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 element during the month of June.

I‘m also creating a book list for my middle school.

My request is for your help in this list. I have a list started and I will try to share the link.

If you know of a picture book, middle grade or high school novel, or non-fiction title I should add please leave a tag to the book in the comments.

I don‘t need likes, just suggestions please.

Thank you!
