The Woman in White
The Woman in White | Wilkie Colli
8 posts | 4 read | 2 reading | 4 to read
'In one moment, every drop of blood in my body was brought to a stop... There, as if it had that moment sprung out of the earth, stood the figure of a solitary Woman, dressed from head to foot in white' The Woman in White famously opens with Walter Hartright's eerie encounter on a moonlit London road. Engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie, Walter becomes embroiled in the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his 'charming' friend Count Fosco, who has a taste for white mice, vanilla bonbons, and poison. Pursuing questions of identity and insanity along the paths and corridors of English country houses and the madhouse, The Woman in White is the first and most influential of the Victorian genre that combined Gothic horror with psychological realism. Matthew Sweet's introduction explores the phenomenon of Victorian 'sensation' fiction, and discusses Wilkie Collins's biographical and societal influences. Included in this edition are appendices on theatrical adaptations of the novel and its serialisation history.

CatLass007 Thank you for the reminder! I had forgotten that I was supposed to read some of this today. 2d
Ruthiella Such a delightfully creepy beginning! 2d

Clare-Dragonfly This is exciting! Pesca is such a delight. I‘ll be disappointed if the rest of the book is all at Limmeridge and he doesn‘t show up. 2d
Clare-Dragonfly I do have to say, the description of “a woman in white” is not exactly calculated to get the right person back to the asylum 😂 2d
Bklover Ooh, this is fun! Pesca is wonderful! Mom was fun too, although Sis is a stuffy thing! 2d
Bookwormjillk Super creepy. I loved it. 2d
Leftcoastzen Wonderful! So happy I joined in ! Great intrigue in this beginning. Love Pesca . 2d
TheAromaofBooks This one is off to a great start!! I also loved Walter's sister vs mom - isn't it funny how as you get older, you're less concerned about what people think, so you start having fun again? 😂 2d
ElizaMarie I love how quickly something happens! I‘m excited to read more!!! 2d
mcctrish Another great start #wearentinlarkriseanymore 1d
julieclair Off to an intriguing, creepy start. Love it! 1d
dabbe @mcctrish You mean we're not going to read 40 pages on just farming equipment? 🤩 1d
mcctrish @dabbe or the endless ramblings of drunk Russians or the lack of mysteries in verdant valleys 1d

Wilkie Freakin Collins. God forbid he uses actual chapters to make our lives easy 🙄 #thisfreakingguy #anyway take a look at how I divided it up and let me know if this doesn‘t work. I can always spread out some of the longer sections an extra day. For the multiple day chapters… they are divided into sections, so the numbers at the end are how many sections each day. Hope this makes sense. Drop your thought below #hashtagbrigade we start Saturday

Bookwormjillk How dare you Wilkie. 4d
Librarybelle Wilkie was a strange guy. I‘m happy to go with the consensus of the group. 4d

Ruthiella Wilkie took a lot of opium. Give him a break. 😂 4d
Bookwormjillk @Ruthiella well that bodes well 😂 4d
julieclair I think you‘ve done a brilliant job trying to wrangle dear Wilkie‘s opium-induced non-chapterism into submission! 👍🤪😂 4d
Bklover I actually followed the plan (I think!). Sounds good to me. Oh, and maybe the opium will make this interesting! 4d
KathyWheeler Can I be added to this event? I‘ve owned this book for years and would like to get motivated to actually read it! 4d
kwmg40 Looks good. I'll try to follow as best I can! 4d
TheAromaofBooks Looks great!! Sooo complicated when a book doesn't have just regular chapters!! 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Eep! I‘ll do my best to keep up! 😅 4d
KAO I don‘t really follow. “March 2-4 5 per day”? Isn‘t this 96 pages for the first section divided by 3 days=32 pages per day? What does “5 per day” mean? Edited: Oh!! This must mean five parts labeled with Roman numerals! I see now. (edited) 3d
KAO I‘m not so sure I‘ll keep up with the rest of the books I have going! I‘ll give it a shot though. 3d
BarkingMadRead @kao that chapter is split into sections, so it‘s 5 sections of that chapter per day. If I split it into pages, it might have us stopping mid- mini chapter. There are 15 mini chapters (edited) 3d
CatLass007 Well thank goodness the free Audible copy has the same table of contents. 3d
BarkingMadRead @catlass007 I had real stress that the different copies would be set up different 🤣#freakingwilkie (edited) 3d
BarbaraJean This looks good to me! Thank you for divvying up all of Wilkie‘s eclectic “chapters” for us! Of course, I still have to check the TOC in my library ebook copy… because I could have SWORN I owned a copy but it is nowhere to be found. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3d
KAO @BarkingMadRead I get it now! I just finished reading sections 1-5 of the first part this morning. I‘m enjoying it so far! 3d
BarkingMadRead @kao yayyyyyyy 3d
Clare-Dragonfly Are we starting today (Saturday, March 1) or tomorrow (March 2)? 😅 3d
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly ohhhhhh I said tomorrow, so we are starting tomorrow 🙈 sorry y‘all! 3d

Pickpick

I finally finished it! I started it on my trip to visit family five weeks ago, paused to work on other things, and now it‘s finally done! This was such a good read. The original English “sensational” novel, it has some mystery and some thrills, with a neatly tied-up ending, but it was so very well done. Highly recommend. Chunkster, clocking in around 650 pages, but easy to devour in doses.

JamieArc I read the tagged book after this one and found it to be a good contemporary companion read 3y
Singout It was one of the first audiobooks I listened to and I loved it! 3y

My pumpkin pie has evil eyes…but the custard from leftover filling tasted great! Today I‘m thankful for running water (nearby neighborhood lost water on Tuesday), working appliances, a delicious feast, family, friends, Litsy! and finding time to read the tagged in bursts between cooking!
Love to you all, and Happy Thanksgiving (or Thursday)!

Ruthiella Looks delicious 😋! Happy Thanksgiving! 3y

Thanks for the tag @julesG #Two4Tuesday

1 - I don‘t usually set reading goals other than just read what I can and enjoy it, but this year I decided to see if I can read 300 books. So far I‘m at 277, so it‘s still close.

2 - I want to finish the tagged. I‘m halfway and reading other stuff for a bit, but it‘s really good.

Who hasn‘t played yet? @Endowarrior21 @Alfrazier21 @kspenmoll @tenar

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 3y
tenar I‘m feeling pretty proud of my 50 books- 277 is fantastic! At the end of last year I was also part way through The Woman in White, and I really enjoyed finally finishing it up. I hope you do, too! 3y
ravenlee @tenar my total does admittedly include a fair number of kids‘ books, many of which are picture books. I figure I read a ton to/with my daughter for fun and for our homeschool, so why shouldn‘t that be part of my “official” count? I think next year I‘m going to go a little slower, though, and maybe read some heavier or longer books, be less focused on number. 3y
kspenmoll Definitely include children‘s books !!! 3y

My easy flight and three-hour layover, followed by a longer flight has turned into a hellish day of delays and cancellations and reroutes. Now I‘ve been at DFW for over 3 hours and have a little more than 3 to go. I finally got some food and found a quiet place to sit, charge my phone, and read.

And now I‘m nodding over my book. I don‘t usually drink caffeine, but I think it‘s time for a Coke.

merelybookish Good luck! Those kinds of travel days suck the life. 3y
Ruthiella Sorry for the hassle! I hope your journey improves soon. ❤️ 3y
slategreyskies Oh, that sounds terrible! I hope things smooth out for you soon! Hang in there! 💕 3y

ravenlee Thanks everyone @Singout @slategreyskies @Ruthiella @merelybookish I made it, finally! My flight arrived at 11 last night (originally expected to be there at 3 😳) and my most awesome sister picked me up. Today we get to surprise our mom for her birthday tomorrow! 3y
Ruthiella Yay! You made it. Your mom‘s going to be so happy to see you! 😃 3y

If I had been reading the Moonstone, I would be done with this book by now. Also, I updated my iPhone last night and it wiped all the data from my Litsy account. Thanks a lot Mac.😠

Drnkpnkprincess Whhhhhaaaaaat!?! I just updated mine and Litsy stayed intact! Such a bummer... BUT on another note, a woman in white is fantastic and yes it‘s ridiculously long but wait until you get to the 🤯 stuff and you‘ll finish it quickly! 7y
RaimeyGallant Did you get your Litsy data back? 7y
Cedricsmom @RaimeyGallant thanks for asking. I got some back but I don‘t think my stats came back. I need to replace my battery and that probably accounts for some issues. 7y
RaimeyGallant You should email screenshots to litsy@librarything.com. They're asking people with problems to. 7y
RaimeyGallant P.S. I'm having the sane issue. Someone has brought it up in the Facebook group, so we're not alone. 7y
