The Writer's Map
The Writer's Map: An Atlas of Imaginary Lands | Huw Lewis-Jones
22 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 63 to read
It's one of the first things we discover as children, reading and drawing: Maps have a unique power to transport us to distant lands on wondrous travels. Put a map at the start of a book, and we know an adventure is going to follow. Displaying this truth with beautiful full-color illustrations, The Writer's Map is an atlas of the journeys that our most creative storytellers have made throughout their lives. This magnificent collection encompasses not only the maps that appear in their books but also the many maps that have inspired them, the sketches that they used while writing, and others that simply sparked their curiosity. Philip Pullman recounts the experience of drawing a map as he set out on one of his early novels, The Tin Princess. Miraphora Mina recalls the creative challenge of drawing up "The Marauder's Map" for the Harry Potter films. David Mitchell leads us to the Mappa Mundi by way of Cloud Atlas and his own sketch maps. Robert Macfarlane reflects on the cartophilia that has informed his evocative nature writing, which was set off by Robert Louis Stevenson and his map of Treasure Island. Joanne Harris tells of her fascination with Norse maps of the universe. Reif Larsen writes about our dependence on GPS and the impulse to map our experience. Daniel Reeve describes drawing maps and charts for The Hobbit film trilogy. This exquisitely crafted and illustrated atlas explores these and so many more of the maps writers create and are inspired by--some real, some imagined--in both words and images. Amid a cornucopia of over two hundred full-color images, we find here maps of the world as envisaged in medieval times, as well as maps of adventure, sci-fi and fantasy, nursery rhymes, literary classics, and collectible comics. An enchanting visual and verbal journey, The Writer's Map will be irresistible for lovers of maps, literature, and memories--and anyone prone to flights of the imagination.

I love a book #WithMap so I kept picking this one up at my local indie bookstore last weekend. I was very tempted to buy it but I maintained my willpower.🙅🏻‍♀️📚 It‘s full of maps of the places authors have created & essays on what inspired them & maps in general. 🗺️ 💙

kspenmoll I can understand why you were tempted! 8mo

I've wanted this book for so long and it's finally mine! A Christmas present from my husband and daughter. This is what I'd describe as a "nice book", a term originating in my childhood for a book that was a bit special. It was always such a thrill to receive a "nice book". I still get such a warm contented feeling from owning a book as "nice" as this one. My geeky little heart is racing - maps in books always excite & delight ?

readingjedi This photo does NOT do the cover justice AT ALL! 3y

This book is beautiful! Luscious. It is, however, much more shallow than I had hoped. The chapters all read as too short, as if they were longer, then edited back, stopped short. It all kind of feels like repeated coitus interuptus. I wanted more details, deeper reflections. I'm a book and map nerd.

Suet624 Repeated coitus interruptis. Love it. 5y

This book is so pretty!!!

I only have the galley, so I can‘t do it justice, but there are gorgeous maps throughout and if you look in the Litsy database you can see it‘s a giant, gorgeous hardcover. I‘ve always loved maps, even though I have an atrocious sense of direction, and this book is full of creators sharing their love of books and maps. Highly recommend!

“The invention of the grid-map, which occurred more or less coevally with the rise of modern science in the sixteenth century, introduced a whole new power to cartography.” 🗺

This book is sooooo beautiful. It had good information too, but I found myself way more interested in the images. Maps from the real world/history and also from books and stories.

Essays from writers and illustrators about maps of imaginary lands. From belief, to creation, including creating the right type of map, and how to read a map. Beloved landscapes such as Treasure Island, Narnia, Moby Dick, and Middle-Earth are brought to life.

I bought this book while I was buying Christmas gifts (oops). I will no doubt read most of the essays in it, but I really bought it for it's 220 colour plates of literary lands well or little known and it has completely lived up to my expectations. This book is absolutely gorgeous. There are also essays by authors on how they made their maps. A brilliant gift for map lovers and bookworms.

Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
