An Anonymous Girl: The First Three Chapters
An Anonymous Girl: The First Three Chapters | Greer Hendricks
The next novel of psychological suspense and obsession from the authors of the blockbuster bestseller The Wife Between Us Seeking women ages 1832 to participate in a study on ethics and morality. Generous compensation. Anonymity guaranteed. When Jessica Farris signs up for a psychology study conducted by the mysterious Dr. Shields, she thinks all shell have to do is answer a few questions, collect her money, and leave. But as the questions grow more and more intense and invasive and the sessions become outings where Jess is told what to wear and how to act, she begins to feel as though Dr. Shields may know what shes thinking...and what shes hiding. As Jesss paranoia grows, it becomes clear that she can no longer trust what in her life is real, and what is one of Dr. Shields manipulative experiments. Caught in a web of deceit and jealousy, Jess quickly learns that some obsessions can be deadly. From the authors of the blockbuster bestseller The Wife Between Us comes an electrifying new novel about doubt, passion, and just how much you can trust someone.

Another great book by these authors. I love how relatable Jessica (the main character) is to an average woman in her late 20‘s. This book was hard to stop listening to as it has so many twists and turns. If you are looking for a great psychological thriller look no further.

I gave it 150 pages ... and I‘m bailing. Story line is ok , characters & writing .... not for me. Some of the images are cringe-worthy ... my mind was ‘spinning like a washing machine‘... 🤦🏻‍♀️
Definitely potential in the plot .. I almost kept going to see what happened next , but I couldn‘t.... 🤷🏻‍♀️

ljuliel You‘ve got more patience than me. If a book isn‘t catching my attention by the first few pages or chapters, I usually toss it and move on. Too many other books waiting for a turn. 🙂 2mo
TrishB I‘ll leave it on the pile for a while longer! 2mo
Cathythoughts @ljuliel I agree ! Too many books waiting .... the plot kept me in for awhile ... anyway , moving on now... 👍🏻♥️📚 2mo

Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain yes! And you know, if I could read faster I might have plowed on to find out what happened ... 👍🏻♥️ 2mo
Lindy Were you not even tempted to skip to the last chapter and read the end before you bailed? 2mo
Cathythoughts @Lindy ... I think I wanted to move on. I‘m reading Tana French, The Wych Elm , now.... happy out !! Thanks ♥️👍🏻 2mo
Lindy @Cathythoughts Hope this one grabs you. 🤞 2mo

lynneamch I ended up liking this one a lot. The writing seemed stilted, until I realized those chapters were the doctor's observation notes. Maybe the audio made it better for me. 2w

This thriller kept me awake half the night. Not because it was so scary that I couldn't sleep, but because I couldn't stop reading. The story of Jess, who as a client comes under the spell of the perfect and mysterious psychiatrist Doctor Shields, is filled with twists that kept me guessing until the end. Recommended!

Cathythoughts Well that‘s a great recommendation! Stacked 2mo

I listened to this thriller about a woman who joins a research study to earn some extra money and gets involved in the researcher's marriage. It was engaging and not entirely obvious. the characters were not likable, and the ending wasn't satisfying. There was a lot of book for a little story.

Well-written and addictive! An Anonymous Girl has now become the best book I‘ve read so far, overtaking The Farm. The characters are so deeply explored and at points you feel like you‘ve been pulled into their world. There is a twist and turn at every flip of a page, you think you understand it all- think it‘s all figured out- and then there‘s a spanner thrown in the works and then a spanner thrown at the spanner. A must read. A work of art.

This isn‘t something I would ever have picked up on my own, but it‘s my book club read for the month. I liked it more than I expected, but it didn‘t blow me away. There were so many predictable parts, and Dr. Shields was just obnoxious...

Very good . Highly recommend. This is a psychological thriller. A girl joins an on-campus scientific study about morality. Over time she and the professor have a strange but not intimate relationship. Enjoyed the characters very much.

So, I‘m not even half way in and I‘m not sure I can take it anymore. Maybe it‘s the audio but...no, pretty sure it‘s just the story. The whole thing seems so ridiculous. The audio is pretty rough, too, though. Jess‘s POV narration I can take but Dr. Shields? Who even speaks like that?

mcipher OMG the Dr. Shields sections drove me CRAZY. I didn‘t do audio but I totally agree. 3mo
SanjanaGhosh OMG same here. Dr. Shields seemed to be a mind reader ...not the cool type, the extremely unrealistic type. It was kind of annoying 😂 3mo

"A secret is a secret if one person holds it"

Jessica signs up for a psychology survey on ethics and morality by Dr. Shields for want of some quick cash. The questions are basic at first, until it starts getting too real and personal. Soon the sessions turn into practical outings and eventually she starts confusing reality with set up scenarios which Dr. Shields has orchestrated and her paranoia grows.

Mistake? Is it voicemail or voice mail ??

Pruzy Apparently voice mail is an out of date spelling. Like e-mail vs email. https://grammarist.com/spelling/voicemail/ 4mo
BookNAround Merriam Webster says voice mail is correct but other sources say voicemail or both are fine so it depends on what source the author or editor is using as their authority. (edited) 4mo
DrexEdit Chicago manual just endorsed website as one word in their last edition so voicemail may be headed the same way eventually. 4mo
Bklover This is a pretty recent book so I‘d think it would be voicemail. 4mo

umbrellagirl No. It‘s a dress code. Like saying he wore business casual. 4mo

Lcsmcat “Black tie” is what most people mean when they say tuxedo. As opposed to white tie, which is a “tail coat” with cummerbund. 4mo

Mistake? should it be "such as A Hermes logo..."

BookNAround Depends how you pronounce Hermès. If it‘s air-maiz (approximate phonetics since I don‘t know where all the symbols are on my keyboard), the article is correct as printed. If you voice the H, it‘s not. 4mo
umbrellagirl @BookNAround what she said ^^ it‘s based on the French pronunciation so no H sound. 4mo

This was a fast-paced, twisted psychological thriller and I devoured it in just a few hours. It kept my interest from the first page until the last. It is the perfect book to read on a lazy summer day. The villain is deliciously evil, but I found the other main characters to be pretty unlikable as well. It was difficult to cheer for the heroine when she was such a crappy human being herself. The plot was cleverly devised and adequately executed.

I liked this book, it kept me interested all the way through. It was very intriguing and thought provoking. I liked the game of cat and mouse between Jessica and Dr.Sheilds. This book felt very intense at times, I wish their would have been a little more action, but the betrayal and deception kept me wanting more. 4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

3 stars I enjoyed this one but although I haven‘t read many thrillers every time I read them I seem to have some unreachable plot twist standards that can never be met. Is it too much to ask, all I want is the most shocking plot twist ever that I can‘t see coming but that makes complete sense at the same time 😂

JamieArc Have you read Fingersmith by Sarah Waters? Not exactly a thriller, but it has some of the best plot twists I‘ve read, and I know other Littens would vouch for it too. 5mo

Perhaps an unpopular opinion:
Although I finished, this nearly earned DNF status. The characters were mostly interesting, yet the story fell flat for me. Luring husbands into affairs is just too much of an obsessive behavior for a respected therapist. I never bought into it. I kept hoping for an awesome twist, but the only one presented I had deduced earlier on. ⭐⭐
I just couldn't give it any more than this, sadly.
