Also, here's a pop art of my 24in48 progress, just because 🎉

This book is dark. It is full of violence. The main character, Prince Jorg, and his band of brothers, a motley collection of violent men, have not one redeeming quality among them. Nevertheless, I found myself strangely attached to them - probably because the world they inhabit is just as brutal and unforgiving as they are. This book won‘t be for every fantasy fan, but I‘m looking forward to the next installment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TrishB Phew.....that‘s exactly how I felt! I don‘t often recommend this to anyone because of the reasons you‘ve said. 8mo

I should not be starting another book. I should be finishing those I‘m already in the middle of. The problem is that none of my in progress reads are fantasy novels, and that is the genre I‘m currently in the mood for. I believe Lawrence has several fans among Litsy folk (I think @TrishB is one of them, right?), so I have pretty high expectations for this book.

Ashley_Nicoletto This has been on my shelf for years. 8mo
TrishB This is one of my fav trilogies and Jorg is a brilliant anti-hero. (I always feel I have to say it can be violent...it didn‘t bother me but I‘ve seen reviews where it did bother people). 8mo
Melissa_J @Ashley_Nicoletto mine too 😊 8mo
Melissa_J @TrishB thanks for the warning. I don‘t usually have issues reading violent things (although watching violent shows or movies does bother me). 8mo

I needed the change of pace into something very dark and violent. I like that the anti-hero was unapologetically bad. Jorge is no bad boy with a heart of gold; he‘s straight up evil. Looking forward to continuing the journey.

HOLY MOLY!! This book was just what I needed to get out my reading funk. Oh so dark and gritty and foul and just evil on every page. Prince Jorg is one angry child and I‘m here for the whole adventure. This boy wants death and will spare no cost to have it done, friend or foe he does not care! Time to start book 2 as I have not had enough of this world yet! My May reading started off strong!

Umm excuse me Mr. Mark Lawrence but who gave you permission to write such a compelling story right from the first paragraph. I totally understand why people praise his work, I am 80 pages into this book and hot dang is it amazing. This Prince Jorg is so blood thirsty it‘s insane and I am loving it (kid is 13 wtf?!?) seriously this book is something else and I can‘t put it down. This kid wants to cause death so bad.

Mehso-so

By far my least favorite book this year. I didn‘t mind the violence so much, but the majority of characters and world weren‘t very well-developed, there were essentially zero significant female characters, and the writing was incredibly subpar overall. I‘m going to give the second book a try because it‘s much more highly rated, but I won‘t force myself through it if it‘s much like book one.

pppooraikul This one has been on my TBR list for so long. Seems like it‘ll stay there even longer now. 😂 1y

Struggling through this. Finally made it past page 100 after a week of not wanting to pick it up again. I‘m not always a fan of first person, and the writing doesn‘t feel cohesive, especially with all the flashbacks. However, my hold for the second book in the trilogy came in, and I really want to see how much better it (hopefully) gets.

🛡Morbid, gritty, & violent.
🛡Bland storytelling & progression.
🛡Camaraderie of Jorg & his bros was entertaining.
🛡Inconsistencies in Jorg‘s character, esp. w/his views towards women.
🛡His interest in Katherine clashes w/his persona & felt unnatural.
🛡Women are written terribly, of which there‘s only 2 w/minor parts.
🛡Finale was mildly anticlimactic.
🛡Some scenes felt like they were for shock value only.
🛡Disappointed overall.

SO excited to pick this book up today! It‘s been on my TBR for a long time. I love adult fantasy novels involving vengeance.

Follows a guy named Prince Jorg Ancarth, who as a child watched his mother & brother be brutally murdered before him as hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch. By the time he was 13, he became the leader of bloodthirsty criminals. At 15, he returns to the castle to take back what is rightfully his.

Well, here it goes. My first audiobook EVER! I expect some hickups because I'm not native English speaker, but I hope I'll manage. And my old phone was pulled out again, and now serves me for my audiobook, because the only thing that's working properly is audio player. In the meantime, I could use some of suggestions for headphones, which ones are the best for audiobooks?

Kaye Oh I hope you enjoy audiobooks as much as I do. They take some getting used to, I think. It seems to make a different part of my brain work to listen instead of read it yourself. I just use any comfortable earbuds(anything other than those hard uncomfortable earbuds that come with iPods and iPads. Either my ear holes are too small or their earbuds are too big. I have to hang them@in my ear holes kinda like earrings. They always fall out. 2y

A quarter of my way through and liking it so far. I'm not sure what I want for the main character. Letting him stay the villian might be fun and certainly original. But seeing him evolve into a good guy might be more interesting. Then again, you might argue he is still good, and just lost.

Prince Jorg has become one of my favorite badasses. This book is dark, graphic, and deep. This book shows us who we could be if we let the fury and darkness in the world swallow us, but it shows us that even from the darkest places, you can still come back. I think whether we like it or not, Prince Jorg reflects a little bit of us. The characters are well developed, and I can't wait to read the next installment.
