The Overdue Life of Amy Byler
The Overdue Life of Amy Byler | Kelly Harms
Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City. Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down in the city that never sleeps. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, and--with a little encouragement from her friends--a few blind dates. When one man in particular makes quick work of Amy's heart, she risks losing herself completely in the unexpected escape, and as the summer comes to an end, Amy realizes too late that she must make an impossible decision: stay in this exciting new chapter of her life, or return to the life she left behind. But before she can choose, a crisis forces the two worlds together, and Amy must stare down a future where she could lose both sides of herself, and every dream she's ever nurtured, in the beat of a heart.

This is definitely one of my favorite books that I have read this year. I loved the characters and the story and the setting. It was such an honest and entertaining book with a ton of heart and a meaningful message. It really dug into the idea of motherhood and finding yourself while being a mom. I loved everything about this one. 5 stars for me.

BrittanyReads Halfway through this right now and loving it!! 4d

This book was an easy listen but Amy‘s overdramatic thoughts were kind of annoying throughout. I also don‘t have children yet (pregnant with twins though) so maybe that‘s why I didn‘t feel super connected.

Loved it. I love books. I love food. I love NYC. I‘m a mom who doesn‘t ask for enough help. I‘m a mom with a kid who doesn‘t need me as much anymore. If you are all of these things as well, you may love this book. I thoroughly enjoyed this escape fantasy for moms.

I'm glad I read it, but it didn't sit quite right with me. All the while that the author was surely trying to express the all-consuming dedication and difficulties of mothering, she was sort of rubbing me the wrong way. There were times that I felt Amy was going beyond the normal doubts about whether she was a good mom to her actually buying in to the idea that she was a bad mom because she was finally taking some time for herself.

I just spent the last hour crying in my favorite coffee shop as I finished this book and let me just say- EVERYBODY PLEASE READ IT! ❤️🧡💛 The perfect blend of relatable literary, NYC, and teaching references! I honestly feel like Kelly Harms wrote this FOR me, even though I don‘t yet have children. The characters and dialogue are so REAL and completely sucked me in and held me tight for the whole ride. Thank you, @LiteraryinLititz ! 🗽📚🍷💋

My book club never struggles to find good books, but we do struggle to find good books that aren‘t so heavy or depressing. So imagine my surprise when I picked this one BEFORE my book club and found it to be just that. A refreshing slice of life, there are deeper issues explored here. But I found them to be in perfect balance with heart and, believe it or not, a lot of humor. This is not the first book I‘ve read by Harms, nor will it be the last.

JamieArc @Purrfectpages I really liked it a lot. Books about books don‘t always do it for me, but this one was really relatable. I loved all the references, the clever one-liners that made me laugh out loud, and the relationships made among the characters. 3mo

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler is an eminently charming novel (and it's fabulous on audio--I mostly listened on Kindle Unlimited but did the whispersync thing, too). Kelly Harms does a beautiful job creating a protagonist in Amy Byler who is real and relatable. After her husband left her and their two kids three years ago, she has poured all of her energy into single-handedly keeping her family going. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod She makes use of her library degree to get a job in her kids' private school and works to support them without help from her estranged husband (who's totally unreachable in Hong Kong). And then her husband comes back. He wants to get to know their kids again, so he begs Amy to take them for a week. She grudgingly accepts the offer and decides to spend a week in NYC with an old friend, attending a library conference and then having some fun. ⬇️ 3mo
UnabridgedPod As an English teacher and book nerd, I approve of Amy's love of books, of her Flexthology concept (teachers, you must read this book!), and her ability to connect to others because of reading. As a mom, I appreciate Amy's attempts to balance all the parts of her life, her fantastic relationships with her kids, and her quest to figure out who she is both with and apart from her children. I love this book soooo much more than I anticipated. ⬇️ 3mo
UnabridgedPod It's just perfect.⠀

What book has surprised you recently? Did it surpass or fall short of your expectations?

What an absolutely delightful book! 💜💜💜💜💜 From the first chapter I could tell I was going to relate to this protagonist, a Litsy-using (!) school librarian from basically my town in rural PA. I want to be friends with her and her friends! I borrowed this from the library, but I‘m going to buy it and lend it to all my bookish friends. I‘m always disappointed by the “books about books” that everyone seems to love, but this one made up for it!!

I loved this book! It‘s contemporary chick lit and romance, but it‘s also a love letter to books. Amy Byler is a school librarian who has been a single parent for the last 3 years, because her husband walked out and didn‘t look back. Until now; now he‘s back and he wants to spend time with the kids. Now she‘s taking the summer off, on a #momspringa, and rediscovering Amy Byler. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Really enjoying this book, which in addition to being a fun read, is sort of a love letter to books. ❤️📚 I am participating in the Dewey‘s Reverse Readathon. It‘s hour 2 and I‘ve read for a little over and hour and a half. According to my Bookly app, I‘ve got another hour and a half of this book. Had a nap just before 8pm and some iced coffee, which will hopefully help keep me awake past my bedtime (which is about now). #reversereadathon

I thought it was appropriate to have a slightly grubby child be the model for THE OVERDUE LIFE OF AMY BYLER.

I really enjoyed this book about a single mom having a “momspringa” (like an Amish rumspringa).

It was funny and smart and chock full of book references. #howjessreadsin2019 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Funny! Witty! And long overdue.

The best part... was when Amy discovered and then bravely declared that she needed a life too. A life separate from parenting and kids. And when she got passed the grim effect of "motherhood guilt", she got her legs back and used them to create a new life for herself and everyone she loved. ?

Late with my #BFCR2 week 2 check-in - but see where I‘ve been?! We walked down to the natural pool you see way down here and then alllll the way back up - and so many other hilly walks, so I definitely got my steps in (double most days). I didn‘t eat my vegetables and I skipped 3 yoga days, but with all the swimming I know I got tons of extra exercise. Squeezed in 2 finished books on our travel day yesterday. I don‘t normally go for fun nor feel-good books like this with happy endings because, you know, real life is so far from it. But I just couldn‘t resist the sight of books on the cover, plus it was on Amazon First Reads. So I thought, why not! And my, was I surprised that I enjoyed the story!
