Bringing Down the Duke
Bringing Down the Duke | Evie Dunmore
A stunning debut for author Evie Dunmore and her Oxford Rebels in which a fiercely independent vicar's daughter takes on a powerful duke in a love story that threatens to upend the British social order. England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women's suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain's politics at the Queen's command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can't deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for. Sebastian is appalled to find a suffragist squad has infiltrated his ducal home, but the real threat is his impossible feelings for green-eyed beauty Annabelle. He is looking for a wife of equal standing to secure the legacy he has worked so hard to rebuild, not an outspoken commoner who could never be his duchess. But he wouldn't be the greatest strategist of the Kingdom if he couldn't claim this alluring bluestocking without the promise of a ring...or could he? Locked in a battle with rising passion and a will matching her own, Annabelle will learn just what it takes to topple a duke....

4 stars from me! This book had great characters and while reading I was happy, I was sad, I was angry with them. Great writing!

This revolves around Annabelle, an Oxford-educated women's rights activist who's tasked with bringing 'round the head of the opposing party, the Duke of Montgomery. Relying heavily on the "beautiful bluestocking" & "I can't resist him" tropes this nonetheless is a great read. While romance is the primary factor, like it's supposed to be, the reader is also treated to some history of the early women's rights movement in England - fun & educational.

After hearing about this fun book on Litsy, I decided a light read is what I needed after all the mysteries of October. Enjoyed the suffragist storyline, the romance, & Annabelle‘s friends. Too bad the next one doesn‘t come out until next year.
Also, it‘s weird to not be posting multiple times a day & tagging #scarathlon for every post. 😂

I really liked this suffragist themed romance novel. It was just what I needed too - work has been really intense the past few weeks and I‘ve had limited brain capacity for reading denser stuff. I‘m all in for more feminist, activist romance reads like this. #BOTM #romantsy

This was a delightful historical romance. Very well written for a debut novel. A couple of plot lines did make me roll my eyes because it did not seem feasible that they would have occurred in Victorian England. I expected more humor based on the cover but it leaned more towards the serious side. I will definitely check out the next book as I love reading about these suffragettes. Thanks to the publisher for providing the book for an honest review

Suffragettes - the ultimate example of Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History. Good balance of Romance and Historical Fiction. A bit of fluff, yet still inspiring read of Rebellious women who earned my right to vote.
“Perhaps this is not a question of staying out of trouble, Your Grace. Perhaps this is about deciding on which side of history you want to be.”✊

Crinoline_Laphroaig I appreciate this trend in Book Covers. Interesting modern artwork instead of cringeworthy heaving bosoms. It reflects that there is more to the story than just romance. You don't have to be embarrassed to be seen reading in public. #coverlove

This one was slow to start, but once it started rolling I couldn‘t put it down. There was probably one too many obstacles, I think it could have been edited a bit and had better pacing, but I still found it a fairly good #romantsy pick. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼1/2

This isn‘t my normal genre that I would be interested in which I think may have made it harder for me to get into. But, I found this to be a bit predictable and slow in parts. I wanted to give it a shot because I really enjoy books about strong female main characters and this fit the bill. I did enjoy the characters and the plot, but overall, I didn‘t love this one. #botm

I‘m not usually one for historical romances but this Victorian-era story about a suffragette and the duke she‘s trying to recruit to the cause came so highly recommended I couldn‘t resist. There were places where it dragged on a little long but I loved Annabelle and Sebastian so much I didn‘t mind!

Found this on my library‘s “lucky day” shelf! It read like a historical chick-flick with some nice progressive themes :) Looking forward to more in this series because it was an enjoyable read. Though, there was definitely more the author could have done with the depth of the emotions, changes, and characters‘ stories; there was the potential for even more depth that would have made this a unique book among its kind.

I. Loved. This. Book. 🙌🏼 It was like an overtly feminist, sexy, Jane Austen. It‘s not *trying* to be Jane Austen, it just has that “flavor” for lack of a better word. It was just such a fun read. I already want to read it again! Have you read it? Did you love it?

I had really high hopes for this so maybe that‘s why I was slightly underwhelmed. Both of the main characters seemed a bit one-dimensional, and at least 100 pages could have been taken out without missing much. I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I thought I would. 3⭐️ #botm

marleed I think I would have really enjoyed it had the Lady Chatterley TMI love scenes been a bit less graphic. It just didn‘t seem necessary to the overall plot. 2mo

This was quite the romp in Victorian hay. I was intrigued by the setting of the suffragette movement and writing of inheritance, title, gender inequality, reputations, and social mores of the day. I was engaged to see Annabelle and Sebastian to the end of their story.

It‘s a qualified pick because of the over-descriptionW of romantic thought and action. I compare it to a comedy routine made unfunny by the overuse of F bombs.

Crinoline_Laphroaig It's on my nightstand right now. Looking forward to reading. 2mo

I loved this book, I couldn't put it down! It was so much fun to read about a romance set during the times of Women's Suffrage. The romance was so so good, the drama was really good and I loved the characters. The on again off again part of the romance was a little tedious, but that's my only real complaint about this beautiful story. 😊

I love and adore all things Victorian and this quick little historical romance was just what I needed to keep me going on my reading spree. It wasn‘t just all about the couple but rather who they are as individuals and then how being with one another just makes them into better people. I had my moments of not liking characters but it all worked in the end to give me my happily ever after I require from all romance reads.

Annabelle is a penniless country girl who has The good fortune to be granted a position as one of the few women at Oxford. This book is an enjoyable jaunt through Annabelle‘s journey dealing with Oxford, the suffragist movement, and most importantly the Duke. I truly enjoyed reading Annabelle‘s story and how she dealt with each and every obstacle, even if she was very stubborn along the way. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ thanks NetGalley for the early review copy.
