My May #bookspinbingo list. I primarily jumped down to books 401-420 on my Goodreads TBR, but adjusted a bit because 1.) it was originally too nonfiction heavy and 2.) I‘ll be traveling to a work conference the first week in May and don‘t anticipate being able to read much while I‘m there. I added in #authoramonth, #foodandlit, and my IRL book club picks to help with all of this (I usually just use my free spaces for those)
I made my pile mostly based on challenges I‘m trying to finish up before the end of the year. My goal is to read 5. I put in options on hand that have:
an “&” in the title
a title with the word “magic,” “of,” or “crown”
a title with 4 letters or less
titles that start with F, J, or U
my book club pick
I forgot to include my current read, Noir, in the picture, so let‘s say it‘s 21.

Thanks @TheAromaofBooks
Here‘s my #BookSpin / #BookSpinBingo stack for September.
Wish me luck!
Thank you for hosting @TheAromaofBooks

Well I didn‘t get a BINGO going this month but Nobody Cries at Bingo! I still read 3 good books and even got a #BookSpin book off the pile.
I‘ll gladly try again this month.
Thank you @TheAromaofBooks !
#BookSpinBingo
Here‘s my #BookSpinBingo card for August!
I like the options it‘s giving me, but it will be tough to pick a row after I read what‘s necessary for the month!
I‘ll definitely read my #BookSpin book this month!
Thank you @TheAromaofBooks !
Here‘s my stack for #BookSpinBingo and #BookSpin !
This is going to be a busy month so my goal is to read 4 books. Hopefully I‘ll get lucky with a free spot! 😁
About half of the books are from my list last month, and the other half are for other challenges, an ARC, & a book on loan.

"We learned to plan ahead. This is an important skill when you are operating a vehicle that eats gasoline like a big butt eats thin sweat pants."
Today in odd similes.
"My mother rarely drank. When she did, she made it seem like a tedious job. She was only tipsy and already seemed hung over."
"Standing next to one another beside our car, they looked like that photo you get with your picture frames before you pull it out and insert the one of your sloppy relatives."
"Bathroom breaks were orderly ventures in Kindergarten. Like a short, co-dependent football team, we did everything together."
Today in odd similes.
Outside your comfort zone: White Rage.
I didn‘t make it this month but enjoyed much of what I read. On to August.

Her anecdotes are great and really true to rural Saskatchewan. The similarities between our childhoods make it even more sad to hear of the racism she experienced. Although I mentioned racism, that is not the focus of the book. It is about family and growing up, and has lots of humour. But the book has a bit of a jumpy, disjointed feeling as the chapters don't follow a particular order.

I learned about this book from @lindy and really enjoyed it, autobiographical fiction of life "on the rez." The author grew up on the Okanese First Nation, and many of these stories are about her school years in Saskatchewan. The details, the humor, the clear child's naive voice are all so strong and lend themselves to a great read. And perfect for #indigenouspeoplesday
Day 9: Indigenous/Native/First Nations reads ❤️ #riotgrams - Rioter @Kelly
Making some progress.....long way to go but going to go for short and quick reads first! For the free space I take it you just pick any book you fancy? #tbrbingo
I requested this from interlibrary loan after hearing @Lindy talk about it. (Teaser for the next episode of Reading Envy!)

Getting ready to head off for camping trip 2 of 2 this week! This pic was from earlier this week when I took my oldest niece camping on the Southern Oregon Coast for a few days. It was lovely and we read a lot. I sincerely doubt I'll get much reading in on this trip as we're taking her two younger brother with us (and my brother and 5 yo niece are meeting up with us too). 😆 One last adventure before their school starts next week. ✌🏽
Loved this book! Dumont is a skilled writer and, like so many other Indigenous storytellers before her, she manages to tell an often sad and serious story in an engaging way that finds the humor in every situation. I couldn't put down this story of the Dumont family and, as always, enjoyed reading a story about someone else's rez-life that is both similar and different to my own.
Finally got around to writing out my Digital/Kindle #TBR card
Yes those are supposed to be tablets. They did not turn out so well.
I borrowed @RachelO 's idea and made it prettier. Bitty kitten helped. She thought the books were all layed out a little too straight and decided to mess them up a bit to give them a more casual charm- then posed so everyone could see the great artist with her work.
#TBRBingo #kittenlitten
ETA: I made my bingo prettier with @RachelO 's idea. Not her idea prettier, it was already beautiful ✨
And now for #TBRBingo E-book Edition! My kobo "shelves" were getting a little out of control (damn you, kobo sales!) So I decided to do a separate bingo card just for digital books.
Happy Reading!
#TBRBingo Bookshelf Edition is all set! (stay tuned for e-book edition)
I gave myself a freebie with Redshirts, because I actually finished it yesterday. But it was on my shelf for so long, and this way I got to colour in my first square 👍
It's been awhile since I posted an update on my #LitsyReadingchallenge2017 #LRC2017 I have almost knocked them all out! Just two more and a free space to go!!
Please don't judge this book by its absolutely horrible cover. I almost did. I'm glad I read it because I ended up liking it way more than I expected to. It's an honest, hilarious, and eye-opening look at life on a Canadian reservation. I really loved the author's authentic and readable style of writing.
I see a few Littens had already found out about it, but it was Twitter that just brought this comic novel to my attention, about life on a First Nations reservation in my home province of Saskatchewan!
Two down. #litsyreadingchallenge2017
On TBR list over a year - Innocent Blood
Judge by the cover - I Could Pee On This
They also work in my #LitsyAtoZ and Goodreads #aroundtheyearin52books challenges.
"For me, the real reward was a book to distract myself from our ever-changing landscape. No matter where we went or how we got there, I wanted to know that I could depend on a book to centre myself."
?❌✖❌?✖??
"Stocked up at the library" square just completed!!
And I already see at least 4 more squares that I'll be doing this Christmas weekend for sure!!???
?'Free Space'- Hmmmm, probably "Go into a food coma & fall into a nap!!?
Who else wants to play??
I read so many good books this month, including some not pictured like THE MOTHERS by Brit Bennett, FIRE FIGHT by Jacqueline Guest, THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS by M.R. Carey, and RAIN IS NOT MY INDIAN NAME by Cynthia Leitich Smith. But I think I have to go with NOBODY CRIES AT BINGO as the #BestOfNovember because it was so fucking hilarious. But I also loved EVEN THIS PAGE IS WHITE & THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS, for very different reasons.
A hilarious, heartfelt collection of short stories about Dawn, a young Cree/Metis woman. Watch nerdy awkward Dawn as she does stuff like peeing her pants, being called "bannock belly," going to bingo with her mom, driving around with her underage cousins, trying to impress boys, and worming her way out of schoolyard fights. The book doesn't shy away from tough realities (alcoholism, poverty, racism) but the focus is always on humour and resilience
More tea, more rainy afternoon, more Dawn Dumont.
Dawn learning to drive: "To keep my fear at a minimum, Mom described the driving test in detail. 'Its the worst half hour of your life. They're gonna make you parallel park and you have to be twelve centimetres from the curb. If you're off by even one centimetre, it's all over.' "
"Tabitha (older sister) and I were further divided by our innate differences. If you put her in a room full of people, they would be drawn to her quiet confidence in a matter of minutes. If you put me in a group of people, I would find a book and ignore them, too ashamed of my incredible need to be liked to reach out."
Oh Dawn, I get you.
Ah, a rainy afternoon spent reading a book and drinking Japanese Sencha green tea. That's the life.
Dawn's sister's wedding: "The town hall was done up in pink and white, my sister's favourite colours. It was packed with family, friends, and the uninvited. It wasn't a great wedding unless it was crashed."
This is possibly the funniest book I've ever read. Cree / Metis author.
At bingo: "At first it was awkward sitting next to the same white people who glared at Native people when they walked into their stores, but after sharing a few nail-biting jackpots, racism faded into the background as they concentrated on the true enemy:
'Goddamn fuckin' bingo caller!'
'I only needed one number for a fucking hour'
'Last fucking time I play at this hall!' "
