The Magicians Trilogy
The Magicians Trilogy | Lev Grossman
The entire #1New York Times bestselling Magicians trilogy, includingThe Magicians, The Magician King, and The Magician's Land, now availablein one ebook bundleThe MagiciansQuentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, hes secretly fascinated with a series of childrens fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams may have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined . . .The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination. The Magician KingQuentin Coldwater should be happy. He escaped a miserable Brooklyn childhood, matriculated at a secret college for magic, and graduated to discover that Fillorya fictional utopiawas actually real. But even as a Fillorian king, Quentin finds little peace. His old restlessness returns, and he longs for the thrills a heroic quest can bring.Accompanied by his oldest friend, Julia, Quentin sets offonly to somehow wind up back in the real-world and not in Fillory, as theyd hoped. As the pair struggle to find their way back to their lost kingdom, Quentin is forced to rely on Julias illicitly learned sorcery as they face a sinister threat in a world very far from the beloved fantasy novels of their youth. The Magician's LandQuentin Coldwater has lost everything. He has been cast out of Fillory, the secret magical world of his childhood dreams that he once ruled. With nothing left to lose he returns to where his story began, the Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic. But he cant hide from his past, and its not long before it comes looking for him. Meanwhile, the magical barriers that keep Fillory safe are failing, and barbarians from the north have invaded. Eliot and Janet, the rulers of Fillory, embark on a final quest to save their beloved world, only to discover a situation far more complexand far more direthan anyone had envisioned.Along with Plum, a brilliant young magician with a dark secret of her own, Quentin sets out on a crooked path through a magical demimonde of gray magic and desperate characters. His new life takes him back to old haunts, like Antarctica and the Neitherlands, and old friends he thought were lost forever. The Magicians Land is an intricate and fantastical thriller, and an epic of love and redemption that brings the Magicians trilogy to a magnificent conclusion, confirming it as one of the great achievements in modern fantasy.

Kindle deal alert 🚨

The Magicians series is only $2.99 for a 3-book bundle, and each of the Scythe books are $1.99 a piece.

I originally purchased all of The Magicians series on my old (retired) Nook, so I‘m glad to have the series on my Kindle now for such a good price!

I‘ve never read any of the Scythe books but I know they are popular on Litsy, so I couldn‘t pass up the deal for all three books!

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Omg, I LOVE the Scythe series! 🥰 I hope you enjoy them when you get to them. What a great deal! 2y
Kimberlone @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm oh good! I know they are popular and a lot of people love the series. I hope I feel the same! 2y

Parts of these were very good and I liked how different threads all ended up tied together. But I also found too many parts to be juvenile and clumsy.

Say hello to my #LazySaturday starter pack!

My foot and calf swelled up today, so I'm not doing much moving around, just enjoying some King, a bit of ice cream, and also finally catching up on The Magicians.

ReadingEnvy We finally started in on this season last night! 5y

I was gonna do some stuff, but the latest season of THE MAGICIANS came in for me so I've mostly just been cramming it into my eyeballs while I work on my sock. (Holy CRIPES, does it ever take a long time to knit something on 2.25mm needles.)

Samplergal Nice heel though! 6y
mcipher Agh, love that show so much! I can‘t wait for the next season!! I like it so much better than I remember liking the books. I wonder if I should try to re-read them and see how I feel now... 6y
xicanti @Samplergal that's the toe. I should've laid it flat so it was more obvious. I did do the heel tonight, but it turned out the pattern instructed me to start it WAY too soon and I had to unravel it. Grrrr. They really ought to triple check beginner patterns so they don't lead us newbies astray. At least I know I'll be able to do one when the time is right. (edited) 6y
See All 16 Comments
xicanti @mcipher I love the hell out of the books, so I'm 100% in favour of people giving them another go. 6y
SandyW I loved the books too, and just binged seasons 1 & 2. 6y
Samplergal @xicanti ah poo. Unknitting isn‘t fun. I made socks for a few years and now my daughter up north has them all. I still have two pairs. And a ton of sock yarn. Not sure what will happen with it in Florida. Anyway I hope they turn out well for you. Beautiful yarn. Hang in there. If you aren‘t on ravelry I would suggest it. There are tons of wonderful patterns as well as experts when you run into questions. (edited) 6y
Sace That yarn is gorgeous! I've always done my socks on super long circular needles or two circulars. Your four dpns are impressive. I love toe ups because I can try on as I go so I can start the heel exactly when I need too. 😊 6y
Sace And I second the suggestion from @Samplergal to check out Ravelry. 6y
xicanti @SandyW it's soooooo good for binging. I watched the first two seasons more or less as they aired, but I'm gonna stick to DVDs for S4, too, because this rush of story is awesome. 6y
xicanti @Samplergal I wanted to give these socks to my mum, but there are some messy bits from the unravelling so I might keep them instead. I'll see how they look when they're done. I peeked at Ravelry a decade or so back, but I'm such an infrequent and unfancy knitter that I didn't feel like I fit in. Then again, I used to think Litsy was a terrible fit for my reading style, and now I love it here... 6y
Samplergal @xicanti as a mom I know she will love them. A good wash will help. Trust me. 6y
xicanti @RestlessFickleBookHoarder the yarn delights me! I make do with what I can thrift, for the most part, and I've rarely used anything so high quality. The dpns are mostly an availability thing. All my circulars are larger, the thrift store couldn't oblige me with the right size, and I didn't want to buy brand new needles just to experiment with socks when I had something perfectly good on hand. 6y
xicanti @Samplergal she did like the colour when I showed her the yarn! I just hope I get the length right. I want them to be a Christmas present so I can't have her try them on as I work. 6y
Sace I get that. And don't feel like you couldn't fit in on Ravelry. I rarely participate there but it is an amazing place for inspiration, for finding patterns and for finding help. Honestly I haven't knit it years and when I did I was a very plain Jane knitter. 6y
RealLifeReading You're making socks!! That's amazing ! 6y
xicanti @RealLifeReading I've wanted to try it for years and years! I'm glad I finally found the right yarn at the right price. 6y

So, the other day I went shopping with the hubs ( @TheWhiteHatter ) to help him update his work wardrobe. A couple new suits, some shirts, ties, etc.. Anyway, he‘s been saying how he feels guilty that he had a shopping spree and I didn‘t, so he decided to order half of my Amazon wishlist. He‘s a crazy person, but this was quite a nice pile of packages that just arrived! 😂📦📚

I never thought I'd say it, but the show is so much better. I read the books as they came out, they were OK to bad, depending on how much of the poor character development vs. Interesting world building I was in the mood for while reading. The show really changed it up and honestly smoothed it all out enough that I thought I'd misremembered and reread the books, but they are just as clunky as I originally thought they were.

I can't be sure this counts as #urbanfantasy because it's not a genre I'm really familiar with but I think the Magicians falls in it? I'm about a third of the way through the first book and it's exactly how it was described to me - like Harry Potter but with sex and for adults.

#aprilbookshowers day 25 - #unlikeablecharacters

As much as these books are rightfully slagged, I still have to credit Grossman for writing a series I wanted to stick with all the way through, despite by and large being populated with varying degrees of a-holes.

Somasis I think I loved these books because the characters where so flawed. But you are correct, they are mostly a-holes 7y
ItsAnotherJen Haha!!! Thats great. I absolutely agree. 7y
AMVP @Somasis I'm always eager to hear people's thoughts on this series, since it seems to be very polarizing. 7y

So looking forward to watching the next season of the magicians on SYFY. This is one where I think the. Show is better than the books.... either way I'll be watching!

TheLibrarian Great show and great books! 7y
Zelma I can't wait to start watching again. I like the books quite a bit more, but some of the casting is great. And that scene of Quentin singing Taylor Swift is one of the best things ever! 😂 7y

A cross between Harry Potter and Narnia but with a lot more sex and alcohol. Each character had their own personality and flaws making you love them and hate them at different stages. These books are very imaginative and unique. I would definitely recommend them if you are looking for something a bit different.

Flawed characters and a fantastical world, an extremely well written coming of age (and then some) journey. The perfect palate cleanser after heavy, dark novels.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Grossman's fantasy trilogy about magic and coming into adulthood. Often funny, occasionally insightful and consistently gripping, the series satisfied a fantasy craving I didn't know I had.

I loved the show and am very excited to start reading these. Has anyone read them or watched the show?

BookishBron I bought these last week to watch before the show! Have heard mixed review (on both show and books) so looking forward to finding out for myself 😊 8y
CherylDeFranceschi I read them all. I really loved the second book best. It is different than the show (which I really enjoyed), although not markedly so. A lot of the second book is covered by the show, because a lot of it is Julia's story. They were fun, and I thought that Quentin's growth was well portrayed. 8y
BookJunkie429 @BookishBron I thought the show was good. It did take a very dark turn towards the end of the season though. I'm curious to see how the books stack up against it. I also can't wait for season 2! 8y
See All 22 Comments
Lauren_reading I had higher hopes for the first one, but seeing these comments I may go try book 2 8y
BookJunkie429 @CherylDeFranceschi Do you think season 2 will cover more of Julia's story? 8y
BookJunkie429 @LaurenReads Okay, now I'm worried about reading the first book! Lol 8y
Lauren_reading @BookJunkie429 Don't get me wrong - I really liked it, but I think a few other people talking about made me build it up more in my mind before I read it 8y
youngish-adult Read part of the first one. Idk, I couldn't really get into it. I'm going to try it again most likely one day!! 8y
BookJunkie429 @LaurenReads I'll go into it with semi low expectations then. @youngish-adult you could just skip the books and watch the show. It was pretty good! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @BookJunkie429 - it's a lot more in-depth in the book. The first book ends further in the future than the end is Season 1. 8y
LianneB I read the first book and liked it, but didn't LOVE it. 8y
ReadingOver50 I watched the show but never read the books. I need to add them to my giant want to read list. 😀 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I have the first two but haven't started them! 8y
BookJunkie429 @CherylDeFranceschi The books usually are more in depth. Interesting that it ends further in the future though. 8y
BookJunkie429 @LianneB I have a feeling I'll feel the same 8y
BookJunkie429 @ReadingOver50 my list is huge as well! 😝 8y
BookJunkie429 @BarbaraS9 Same, I'll get to them eventually. 8y
Scottisironborn The first one is a bit hard but the series picks up in a big way. I almost gave up but by the end of book three it had become one of my favorite series!! 8y
CesyaMaRae I think I need to buy these 8y
MandaChittles I have lost motivation to read the final book - is it worth it??? 8y

I loved these. LOVED them. The magic was interesting, the characters were not necessarily lovable but they were vivid and real. Great world building. If you loved the Narnia books, or Edward Enright as a kid, this trilogy is probably a good and (very) grownup magic fix.
