pickI don‘t typically read nonfiction, this is my third one! I picked up this book because I started following the Author on Instagram for her activism in the Latinx community.
She has lived a tough life thanks to the immigration system. The struggles she went through and the trauma were intense. I don‘t know how she survived it and be successful. I really admire her and that was before I watch the shows she acted in. Really great book.

pick#CoronaBreak Book 2! This was such a great memoir. It reminded me that you may never truly know what someone‘s going through behind the scenes (even if they star in two of your favorite TV shows). It covers lots of heavy topics, but is full of fun asides!
.. my time with Mami had reminded me of how lonely I felt without her and Papi here. How much I needed them. I didn‘t tell either of them what I was considering. Instead, I stashed the thought away. It gave me something to look forward to, to anticipate, to pray about. We all need that. Dreams are what keeps us alive.

Diane's story is captivating and important. It's so sad to think that this is happening to families all over our country. I especially liked her facts and call to action at the end!

pickI don‘t watch Orange is the New Black or Jane the Virgin, and really knew nothing about Diane Guerrero before reading this. Honestly, her story is about so much more than how she became an actress. I learned a lot about the experiences of “illegal” immigrants and their American born children. I really think everyone could learn something by reading Diane Guerrero‘s story.

Just spotted this #Bingo and thought I'd jump in! I have quite a bit of NF building up in my TBR and it's something I've been hoping to read more of this year (on top of what is probably becoming waaay too many reading goals lol). I've read one so far this year and it could probably fill a couple different spots but I decided to go with "survival."

I‘m so glad my start time at work this week got pushed back , because I stayed up way past my bedtime reading this. Such a heartbreaking story!
pickGuerrero was 14 when she came home from school to find her parents had been detained for deportation. This is both about her experiences growing up as the daughter of immigrants as
well as her experiences after she left, staying with friends and navigating college and adulthood alone.
So excited to have nabbed this ebook on sale the other day.
pickDiane's story was compelling and educational. It was hard to learn about how she became parentless at the age of 14 when her parents were deported to Colombia. She was forever scarred and her experiences made for some rough times ahead. I applaud her willingness to share her story with the world and hope that it will contribute to bringing about change to the immigration system in the US. 3/5⭐️
pickThis is a brave and important book, and is also quite relatable. As I noted, I‘ve never seen any of her acting work, but that‘s definitely not a hindrance to enjoying the book. Yes, the parts that go into the nitty gritty of acting and her first roles were not as interesting for me, but they‘re part of her whole life story. And the account of what she and her family went through is really hard-hitting. Lots of crucial info at the end, too. 4/5 ⭐️
At fourteen, I‘d been left on my own. Literally. When the authorities made the choice to detain my parents, no one bothered to check that a young girl, a minor, a citizen of this country, would be left without a family. Without a home. Without a way to move forward... In the eyes of the ICE, it was as if I didn‘t exist. I‘d been invisible to them.
I haven‘t actually seen anything the author has been in (nope, never watched OITNB, but I do want to watch Jane the Virgin eventually), but I‘ve heard good things about this memoir and the subject is extremely important to me...especially in our current political (un)reality 😣 #nowreading

This book is not only a true American immigrant story for the 21st century but also a coming of age memoir, a raw look at trauma and depression in America. I literally cannot give it enough stars. Longer than it needed to be and full of cliches. However, a worth while read from a courageous and talented young woman.
pickWhat a wonderful and very timely book to listen to, not only is Diane‘s story every child‘s worst fear, but her experiences and struggles through being abandoned when her parents are seized and deported are heartbreaking. And with current decisions regarding DACA and other immigrant rules currently being reversed it‘s a very good time to read this book and learn more about the conversation and the many issues involved.
Also up next! Finished one audiobook, time to start another for when I‘m driving or cleaning or anything else that I can‘t bury my nose in my book while doing! 😂 #BookishProblems
Just started and I can already tell this one is going to be an emotional listen.
pickThis is a story about home and gumption, told in a youthful and casual way. Trigger warning for self harm though. I listened to the audio read by the author. (picture from a CNN interview when she first started opening up about these events, prior to writing this book... She explains in the book how writing it came from a desire to tell a more rounded story that she could control.) #borders2017

Some recent releases that I feel are underrated! They range from comic books to memoirs, but most are poignant and important reads (except for maybe My Best Friend's Exorcism - that one is just a fun ride!).
pickDiane's story of losing her parents to deportation and being set adrift alone in Boston at 14 is horrifying and heartbreaking. I'm glad she had told this story and I hope young people in similar situations find their way to it. It's so important to be sharing these stories, especially now, when we seem to live in such hatred.
pickReally grateful this memoir exists and that Diane shared the story of her family, the good and bad parts. I think this falls under the same category as I Am Malala for me: an important story that I wholeheartedly recommend, with the caveat that because both used a co-author imitating their voices, it's not the best written book you'll ever read. Absolutely still recommend, just setting expectations appropriately. 💜
