Scruples | Judith Krantz
17 posts | 16 read | 7 to read
Scruples is the novel that created publishing history, the first-and widely acknowledged to be the very best-novel ever written about the staggeringly luxurious life of a Beverly Hills boutique and the people who work in it. Scruples was translated into twenty languages and made Rodeo Drive famous around the world. The New York Post said that "Scruples was born to be a smash bestseller. . . It has more inside information about the worlds of high fashion and Hollywood than you'd find in a dozen manuals." With Scruples, Judith Krantz earned her reputation as a blazingly talented and original storyteller. she takes her readers behind the scenes of wealthy and fame to show them the real people and the real emotions that exist at the core of even the most high-powered lives. Scruples is the leader of her #1 best-selling novels. From the Paperback edition.

I haven‘t seen so many Judith Krantz books since the 1980s…till today.

AmyG I think I have read them all. 😬 2y
batsy Omg the nostalgia ... Used to borrow my sister's books. My friends and I used to pass it around in secondary school like contraband 😆 2y
dabbe As a tween, I used to snag my mom's Krantz books and look for the (ahem) “interesting“ parts. 🤣 2y

AmyG @dabbe Ha! I read Harold Robbins for that. 🤣 2y
Leftcoastzen @AmyG funny you should mention Robbins , there were many of his there too.I almost bet they were donated from the same collection. A little library store. 2y

This was like dynasty and Real Housewives rolled into one book! Published in 1978 this has all the drama, back biting and crazy you‘d expect. The characters here are over the top but it‘s amazing. First time reading this author. I understand why she was so popular! #weremember @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

LeahBergen I read this back in high school (and many more of her books)! 😆 3y
KristiAhlers @LeahBergen that‘s awesome. I‘ve downloaded a few more of hers. I remember my mom reading her on vacation trips! 3y

✨ ICYMI ✨ Last week‘s episode was all about SCRUPLES by Judith Krantz, a classic in the bonkbuster genre. You know it‘s important because I used page flags to mark the line “she had the disposition of a woman who had lived her whole life in pants” and the words “tumid lips.”
You can check out our thoughts and other great insights about this wild book wherever you get your podcasts.

Reecaspieces This is a fabulous book...I must check this out. 5y

Judith Krantz was one of my guilty pleasure reads in the 80s. I remember sitting in the common room, (Collingwood Comprehensive) giggling at the naughty bits in Princess Daisy. I named my cat Mistral after her book Mistral‘s Daughter. I gave away my books years ago but feel sad that she‘s gone.

Leftcoastzen @C.Perone @batsy there should be a study of books borrowed from older sis or mom we shouldn‘t be reading Hollywood Wives , Valley of the Dolls, Peyton Place, Love Story,Rosemarys Baby.... 6y
CarolynM @C.Perone @batsy Scruples was thrillingly naughty in those days, wasn't it? I wonder what we would think of it now? 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @CarolynM 🤔 Good question 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @batsy @Leftcoastzen I remember raiding my mother's library often - Krantz, Harold Robbins, VC Andrews .... Good times for a young adolescent 😂😂 6y
LeahBergen I read her in the early 80s. ❤️❤️ 6y
batsy @CarolynM @C.Perone @Leftcoastzen I've got the itch to revisit some of these thrillingly naughty books of my youth 😆 6y
Leftcoastzen @batsy The Best of Everything was like that , but older , published in 1958.Krantz looks so good 80s like the characters in her books in this photo. 6y
Leftcoastzen @C.Perone we passed this one around!🤭 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @Leftcoastzen I don't know that one 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @batsy lmao - it's definitely a pisser to see how some of that stuff is actually quite tame compared to today's standards 6y
Leftcoastzen @C.Perone @batsy my friend and I started texting about this...she reminded me of her hiding this one from parents 6y
batsy @Leftcoastzen 😆 Never read that one & I feel like my adolescent education was incomplete! Very much looking forward to reading the Rona Jaffe at some point. 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @Leftcoastzen Get Out! The Happy Hooker was a book?! 😂 I always thought it was a movie. I wonder if Debbie Does Dallas was a book too 🤔😂 6y

This is my current read. I have never read Judith Krantz's writing and this was published the year I was born (1978). The book was recommended to me and I started into it, not really having any expectations whatsoever.
I'm loving it. This is SO different than anything else I have been reading. I look forward to getting back to it every night.

MayJasper At first glance it is not a subject I would choose for myself. 6y
MayJasper But sometimes we need to be open and find the unexpected good read 😀 6y
AmyG I read this when it came out. It was a very popular book at the time. 6y
AlaMich I was a kid when it came out but I remember seeing all the adults around reading it one summer. 6y
Blaire I read this for a 1970s challenge prompt last year. 6y

One of my favorite part of the challenges is putting together a stack of possibilities. I love that the #booked2018 challenge is broken down into quarters, because it makes it so much more manageable.

From top to bottom:
Beach read
Japanese thriller
LGBQT
Blame it on Litsy
Takes place at school
Diverse NF

Anyone have a pick for the prompts that they‘re particularly excited about?

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m excited for The Broken Girls (set at school) and for A Little Life (LGTBQIA+ MC). Of course I know the second is a heartbreaker, thanks to all the Littens who‘ve read and posted about it. 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve read both! You may want to save Broken Girls for September because it has kind a creepy vibe to it, perfect for the fall. And yes, ALL will gut you. @BarbaraTheBibliophage 6y
erinreads The Japanese thriller prompt is throwing me for this new season. 6y

Reviewsbylola I researched that one quite a bit because I don‘t have any experience with that genre. @erinreads I chose this one because it had great reviews. 6y

For those of you that saw my #thriftbooks saga a few weeks ago regarding the poor quality book that I received from them, here is a comparison. Thrift Books refunded my money, no questions asked, but made sure to tell me that they go by ISBN and not covers. So with my refund I found the same book at #betterworldbooks. It was listed in good condition and shipping was free, despite only ordering one book. The price of the book was 30-40 cents more.

Mdargusch Glad you got a better copy!👍🏼 7y
ValerieAndBooks Much better!! 7y
Jas16 Will definitely keep this in mind next time I am ordering something 7y

Ok, so here is my beef with #thriftbooks. I actually stopped ordering from them in February of this year because I wasn‘t impressed with the spine stickers and overall quality of the books. I decided after a recent order though to give them another chance, as I wanted quite a few books for the upcoming challenges that I couldn‘t find for a reasonable price. I placed a large order last Friday and got the first package of my shipment today—⬇️⬇️

mjdowens 😡 7y
Reviewsbylola I went through all the editions available of the books I wanted, taking a lot of time to choose the covers I wanted. The particular cover I chose of Scruples was listed as “acceptable” and cost $3.79. First off, this was NOT the cover depicted. Secondly, I wouldn‘t even call this acceptable. Certainly not worth almost $4. It is in horrible condition. The spine and cover is painful to look at. ⬇️⬇️ 7y
Reviewsbylola I realize everyone has different views on what “acceptable” is, but this should have been donated. No way would I even pay 50 cents for it at a library book sale. I wrote to their CS but honestly, I‘m rethinking purchasing from them in the future. It‘s not worth the gamble. Thoughts? 7y
See All 34 Comments
LeahBergen I don‘t order from them anymore after receiving a few in truly disgusting condition. 7y
Rachel.Rencher I've had great luck with Thrift Books before, but I would never order their acceptable books. I learned the hard way that it usually means pages are loose and the cover is damaged. It Is also a gamble as to what edition of the book youll get. I'm sorry you had a bad experience! 😔 7y
swishandflick I've never ordered from them personally. Sounds like "acceptable" to them means "it has all of the pages, what more do you want?" 7y
Reviewsbylola I learned my lesson for sure! I usually don‘t go with “acceptable” but after going through all the editions for this particular book, it was the one I wanted. Obviously my opinion on condition varies from theirs. 🤣🤣 @LeahBergen @Rachel.Rencher 7y
Reviewsbylola Apparently. 😂😂 I guess I should be happy about that. @swishandflick 7y
AmandaL I had the same trouble ordering from them. When I emailed, they immediately refunded my money, but I don't plan on ordering much from them in the future. 7y
robinb Good to hear this as I‘m researching who to order from! 7y
DivineDiana Sorry about your experience, and thank you for alerting us. 7y
tournevis I've used Thrift books before and not have issues, but you are not the first I've heard about with problems with them. It's good to alert them. 7y
BarbaraBB Its condition is way below ‘acceptable‘. In fact it is unacceptable that you should pay for it at all. I would be sooo angry when I would receive a copy like this 🤬😀 (edited) 7y
Mdargusch Nope. Not worth it. That really frustrating. 7y
quietjenn My experience has been similar. Even when I've opted to pay a little more for books in better condition, I've gotten ones that are a long way from acceptable and often not the edition I wanted. They're always been responsive, but I'm frustrated that they don't just pay attention and do things right. 7y
drokka Not sure if they're comparable, but I get used books from BetterWorldBooks. Delivery is free if you buy from their stock (they also have some international sellers - I think@mostly in library books). Their descriptions are always bang on, and I reckon I've never seen anything considered less than 'good'. Also, they give tips on how to gets stickers off books if you ask. (Blow dryer is first step). Also, they're on Litsy @BetterWorldBooks (edited) 7y
Reviewsbylola I always forget about them. Thanks for reminding me. I will def try them out next time! @drokka 7y
jfalkens I used to order from Thriftbooks but the stickers on the spine that are impossible to get off without hurting the book is what made me look into Book Outlet. Book Outlet doesn't have as many older books but the condition is awesome and no super sticky stickers on the books. 7y
Reviewsbylola Book Outlet is my weakness. I order pretty much exclusively from them. Their prices are so reasonable and I‘ve never had an issue with the condition of their books. The only reason I went with Thrift Books this time is because I needed specific books for challenges that I couldn‘t find on Book Outlet. Book Outlet has completely spoiled me. @jfalkens 7y
jfalkens @Reviewsbylola I love them too! I was so sad I couldn't splurge at their last sale 😢 #BookBansAreTheWorst I order exclusively from Book Outlet and Amazon. I get my in person books from Meijer/Wal-mart, Goodwill, Library's twice a year book sale, or a local bookstore 30 mins from me(that I've unfortunately only been to once). 7y
emilyhaldi I have avoided thriftbooks ever since I made my first order and was BEYOND annoyed with the stickers. Seriously, everyone else manages without permanent / damaging stickers, why can't they?! And then i accidentally ordered another book from them through amazon and the condition of the book sucked. Never again 🙅🏻‍♀️ 7y
emilyhaldi Ps. I would feel bad even leaving this book in a LFL 😂😂 7y
Reviewsbylola I KNOW!! It‘s so bad!! It‘s just sitting on my kitchen counter taunting me. @emilyhaldi 7y
Reviewsbylola So CS emailed me back and it refunding me the cost of the book. The rep, Beth, made it a point to tell me though that they go strictly by ISB number though because different editions and covers can share the same ISB number. If that‘s the case, why tf do they list all the different editions and covers in their drop down menu?? 🙄 @mjdowens @LeahBergen @Rachel.Rencher @swishandflick @amandal @robinb @DivineDiana @tournevis @BarbaraBB @quietjen 7y
tournevis @Reviewsbylola Good question. 7y
minkyb This makes me sad because they often have what I am looking for but it is definitely always a risk. Beyond frustrating. 7y
mjdowens I️ don‘t order as much from them@as I️ used to. Their quality seems@to have gone down. 7y
jfalkens @Reviewsbylola that's a very good question. 7y
Amanda.T That‘s so frustrating! I bought a used book online that was listed as “good” condition. It had someone else‘s notes, highlights, and dog-eared pages throughout! 😤 7y
Christyco125 I have only used them once for the Christmas swap and made sure to pick like new and very good. 3 of the 4 turned out well but the 4th looked like someone spilled coffee all over it before it shipped. 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @tournevis @Reviewsbylola I love Thriftbooks! Sometimes the stickers are annoying though! I have emailed them and they offered to refund me for all of the books I bought in which the sticker caused damage. I just asked for credit and they happily did that. I agree with the others tho and only choose “very good” or “like new.” 7y
Cinfhen I‘ve NEVER ordered from them and don‘t think I will...BookOutlet has definitely spoiled me too! 7y

#FunFridayPhoto This my first "adult" adult book. I'll bet I was about 14, and massively sheltered. So when I found this in the library, I was all about it. And when my mom found it in my room she confiscated it. I'm 99% sure she read it herself before returning it. But she was pissed I'd read all the sex parts. I didn't tell her I read them over and over.

BookishMarginalia 😂😂😂 - I read those too, from my mom's stash 8y

The trashiest trash you'll ever love. How can you prepare yourself? I'd suggest wrapping yourself in a leopard print robe, donning large clip-on diamond earrings, knocking back a couple of strong martinis, and having a well-muscled pool boy nearby couldn't hurt. 💖🍸
