American Royals
American Royals | Katharine McGee
Romance, glamour, secrets and scheming . . . Meet the Washingtons - the most scandalous royal family ever! HRH Princess Samantha has always been a royal rebel. She's the spare not the heir, so no one minds toomuch who she dates or how hard she parties. It helps that her sister, Princess Beatrice, is literally perfect. She's demure, sweet and beautiful, and she knows that the crown always comes first - no matter what her heart might really want. But they're not the only ones with their eye on the throne. Daphne Deighton might be 'newly noble' but she she won Prince Jefferson's heart once, and she'll do anything to get back into the court's favour - and his bed. If only she knew that her competition was a common nobody - plain little Nina Leon, the daughter of the king's secretary. Together these four young women must navigate the drama, gossip, scheming and sizzling romance of the most glorious court in the world. They'll either be crowned in glory - or end up as shockingly royal disasters.

No!!!! I don‘t want to wait until Fall 2020 to find out what is going to happen with Princess Beatrice, Princess Samantha, Prince Jefferson and Nina. What if when America won the Revolutionary War they became a monarchy instead. I loved everything about this book. The pages just flew by and I didn‘t want the book to end. Now I need to check out the authors other books!

What is America was a monarchy? This book imagines the Royal Family that could of been, The Washingtons.

This was trashy, tabloid-y, ridiculous and completely addicting. I can not wait to read book two and find out what happens with Princess Beatrice, Princess Samantha and Prince Jeff.

I would‘ve enjoyed this more if a) it had been a fully adult novel with all the salaciousness that could‘ve come with that and b) if I had known it was going to end so abruptly! I was unaware there was a sequel coming and was completely taken aback that after 400 pages there was no real closure. Soapy and fun for some but didn‘t land quite right for me 🤷‍♀️

I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in this series - be prepared for a cliffhanger. This follows the three prince/princesses of the USA and each chapter is told from a different POV. Honestly, I was annoyed with Daphne and her chapters, but besides that little side road, I was emersed in all of the other characters. It will have you cheering and then crying in a 5 page span, so be prepared.

Exactly the kind of soapy, gossipy, entertaining book I was in the mood for. Loved everything about the "what if America had become a monarchy instead of a democracy" angle. Bring on book 2!

So this is like Harry & Meghan meets a soap opera with all the romance problems. There were a few times where snooty royal institutionalists acted like the British tabloids do towards Meghan. It was cheesy for sure, pretty predictable (I mean there's a power hungry ex-girlfriend) but it was just what I needed to read

I took some issues with The Thousandth Floor trilogy so hopefully this is better! Plus there's a character named Samantha and I don't remember ever reading a book with a character that has my name

This book will be missed by a lot of people bc it‘s YA. But try it if you like:
- historical fiction
- alternate histories
- world building (but more in the realm of historical context rather than sci-fi/fantasy)

It definitely has YA tropes, but McGee is a really good writer. She‘s detailed and you can tell she did a lot of research to craft this story. This is the first in a series, so don‘t be mad if the ending isn‘t wrapped up in a bow.

4.5⭐️

Y‘all this book though. Set in an alternate timeline, George Washington was offered and accepted the crown of America after the Revolutionary War. This is the story of the modern royal family with Princess Beatrice in line to become to first reigning Queen of America. From there we see how this causes strains on her and her twin siblings, Jeff and Sam. I loved every minute of this and can‘t wait for book 2😍

I really enjoyed this book! The setting was cool because it was a familiar yet different America; it was interesting to think about how a monarchy might have changed things. I generally liked the characters too, especially Samantha and Beatrice. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Great premise and lovely soapy-saga-y set up but the ending made this a so-so for me because I don‘t think it fulfilled its end of the bargain with the reader. And I can‘t say more because: spoilers

This book was so charming! And I am so disa I couldn't fully enjoy it because my reading has been lacking due to college applications and essays! Yay!

I loved how the characters in this book were so two dimensional. All characters, even the protagonist, had their faults and their good aspects. No character was absolutely perfect, and I loved that.

I have tried to stay away from Young Adult Novels as of recent, as we just haven‘t meshed well. Low and behold, one of my favorite podcasts Bad on Paper selected this as their September Book Club Book. I said why not. The first 15% of this book I was like uh oh this is why I don‘t enjoy reading YA, however, I am glad I persevered because I ended up loving this novel.

essayareayaitch I'm in a love/hate phase with YA right now. I think I read three poorly written, but highly recommended books in a row, and I was over YA, then I picked up one fabulous book and I was in love with it again. This book is on my TBR, so I'm excited about this 3mo

What if George Washington had become king of the US? I loved this alternate history & its ideas of US culture under a monarchy. It felt delightfully gossipy, like getting a peek behind the curtain. I was invested in Beatrice's, Sam's, & Nina's stories & was eager to see how it all resolved. Then it ended! I had NO IDEA this was only the first in a planned series. It ended w multiple cliffhangers & I never like those. Still I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Peddler410 Oh man! I HATE getting to the end of a book and realizing there‘s a series coming 😔 I just bought this and I planned on reading it next ... now I might wait a bit. Bummer 3mo

For those that enjoyed The Selection, this one is for you. What if when George Washington was asked to be king, he said yes, and instead of a democracy, America was a monarchy? If you are looking for something with the same dark bite as her first books, you may have to wait. While we see small glimmers of that edgy writing, this book is far more tame and reads similar to The Selection.

This was a fun alternate history book of what would have happened if America was a monarchy. Now I love the British Royal Family but that‘s only because I am not British. That would make me mad if I was. So I think an American Royal family would be terrible but this was still an entertaining book and a quick read.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to love this alternate present novel about an America where Washington accepted the monarchy. And there were lots of things I enjoyed about it-- especially exploring what an American royal family might look like. That said, it fell short for me. Felt a bit too predictable. A fun read for people looking for more royal romances, I think, but not one of my favorites.

I think might expectations were too high; I was expecting a light hearted read and it wasn‘t that. What is this? It‘s a melodramatic soap opera that basically ended in a cliffhanger.
