Cloud isn't just a place to work. It's a place to live. And when you're here, you'll never want to leave. "On the surface, The Warehouse is a thrilling story of corporate espionage at the highest level, but dig a little deeper and you'll find a terrifying cautionary tale of the nightmare world we are making for ourselves."--Blake Crouch, New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter Paxton never thought he'd be working for Cloud, the giant tech company that's eaten much of the American economy. Much less that he'd be moving into one of the company's sprawling live-work facilities. But compared to what's left outside, Cloud's bland chainstore life of gleaming entertainment halls, open-plan offices, and vast warehouses...well, it doesn't seem so bad. It's more than anyone else is offering. Zinnia never thought she'd be infiltrating Cloud. But now she's undercover, inside the walls, risking it all to ferret out the company's darkest secrets. And Paxton, with his ordinary little hopes and fears? He just might make the perfect pawn. If she can bear to sacrifice him. As the truth about Cloud unfolds, Zinnia must gamble everything on a desperate scheme--one that risks both their lives, even as it forces Paxton to question everything about the world he's so carefully assembled here. Together, they'll learn just how far the company will go...to make the world a better place. Set in the confines of a corporate panopticon that's at once brilliantly imagined and terrifyingly real, The Warehouse is a near-future thriller about what happens when Big Brother meets Big Business--and who will pay the ultimate price. Advance praise for The Warehouse "Holy hell, The Warehouse is our future, isn't it? Imagine that one day we screw up the world and our country so damn bad that we all have to live where we work in what amounts to a modern variant on indentured servitude, and then layer on top of that a bleeding-edge thriller set inside a massively autocratic corporate entity, and you still haven't seen just how sharp, or scary, this book is. . . . Taut, tense, and masterful."--Chuck Wendig "Wildly imaginative yet terrifyingly real, The Warehouse is both a gripping thriller and an alarming glimpse into what could soon be our future."--Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of Lock Every Door

⭐️⭐️I appreciate what the author was trying to say in terms of how corporate is taking over our lives however the execution was seriously lacking. Needed better character development and world building. Ending left me unsatisfied

I got this book as an #arc years ago at a comic-con. It was so clever the way the author creates a dystopian world that is ruled by a big box store (walmart/costco). Scarily realistic and unlike anything I'd read before.

My book clubs choice this month and it was a very popular read. High scores and a lively discussion about greed, capitalism and big business. Although described as a dystopian novel we all felt this is already happening in our present. This novel will might make you think.

I often feel like corporations are getting too powerful. In The Warehouse a company called Cloud sounds very much like Amazon, and it‘s by far the largest shipping operation in the country. The employees live in tiny apartments on site, work 9 hour days 6 days a week, and make less than minimum wage.

Two characters get hired, each with an agenda to sabotage Cloud.

I really liked this, great pacing, twists I didn‘t see coming, fun read!

Hooked_on_books I‘m so glad! I loved this one and I feel like it flew under the radar a bit. 2y

Started off well but trailed off. Still worth a read. The world-building is subtle and it's a plausible cautionary tale of what happens when Amazon takes over the world. I was sideswiped by a direction one character took later on that undermined the sympathy they'd built up, but it's generally well done and Hart's heart is definitely in the right place. Annoyingly the ebook is marred by paragraphing errors that make it hard to tell who's speaking.

LittlePixels Does it make you want a 🍔? 😉 2y
GarethSouthwell @LittlePixels Absolultely not! :) That was a nice touch, I thought. Lots to admire in the book, just lacked something to take it to the next level. 2y
LittlePixels @GarethSouthwell I felt the same. It was a good read, but not a great one. 2y
GarethSouthwell @LittlePixels Yes, this was my first book by the author. Similar in some ways to Dave Eggers' The Circle, which I found similarly “OK“. Not read the follow up, yet - maybe that's better.

Book 106🎧 4⭐️

This book was almost a 5⭐️, the body was so good and I thought it was going to lead up to this huge reveal but it kinda just got closed up nicely and that‘s that.

I wanted to know more about the box, the power, the burgers😂

But aside from that, an amazing novel and very easy to imagine based on our current state of things and the power of Amazon!

This book is sooo good! It reminded me of 1984 for modern times. The idea of what would happen if big brother combined with big business. The author has executed it so well it feels possible. The comparisons to Amazon and Walmart were there and I feel like I could get more from this story from a reread because it is so clever. #pop22 #popsugar #highlyrecommend #mustread

Retail giant Cloud has essentially taken over a future dystopian world which is almost unhabitable. Paxton and Zinnia both have their reasons for applying to their live-work facilities.. parallels to our world of 2021 hit a little close to home...

??? The world has long been a hot desert with ghost towns because of the global warming. "Cloud" is a place where you can get a job, housing and everything necessary for life. Sounds good, but what is the price? The story is told on behalf of three characters. There are a lot of things that are hidden between lines. Unfortunately, the main characters didn't seem interesting to me, so I rate the book only three stars(

BookMaven9 They were so bland and needed a backstory to care. I didn‘t feel I knew them 3mo

Entertaining dystopian thriller that muses on how the company that puts Amazon out of business might upend daily work and life. That behemoth is called 'Cloud', Amazon on steroids, with an army of drones and a workforce who live and work on sites across the country. The story is told from 3 POV's: Cloud's dying founder, and two new recruits, a jilted ex-CEO and a corporate spy. An eerily possible dystopic world, though the end is pretty bonkers.

vivastory The cloud burger 😬😱 4y
Billypar @vivastory Yup- a very Soylent Green moment. Not to be outdone by the casual revelation that Cloud has secretly mastered cold fusion. Talk about a day of surprises 😅 4y

Hart's fictional Amazon in The Warehouse is effective and damning. It doesn't read as fiction as much as dystopia-new realism. Literally 7 of the 8 blurbs on the back mention the sense of this potentially being right around the corner. Hart did a great job at showing the convenience of online retail and the human cost for the low prices & quick delivery. Also, as you can see from the picture I've done more than my share of ordering from them. 👇

vivastory As I've mentioned in previous posts I've begun using bookshop.org Still, I'm under no illusions. I will still occasionally use Amazon, but I'm trying to be more conscientious of where my money ends up. 4y

vivastory @Hooked_on_books I'll be curious to see what Hart publishes next. Have you seen the documentary Yes Men? It's about 2 activists who prank the corporate world by giving presentations of absurd ideas. One of them was pretty similar to the cloud burger 😱😂 4y

I really loved this one even though it envisioned a scary future for our world. This story is set in the future where an online retailer basically runs the entire US. The employees both work and live on each of the company's campuses, and they are under the constant, watchful eye of the company. The company's founder is sick with only a short time left to live, and he is using that time to make final visits to his company's facilities.

Holy crap. This book was great. I was so drawn into the dystopian Rob Hart created and kept wanting more. It was well paced and built this world that we are all familiar with, but then added twists and turns along the way. A must read for anybody who utilizes a company named after a river in South America.

This book is good. Well written and a compelling look at what it means to be part of the labor precariat where the only jobs available treat you as completely disposable. But it was so grim and such a terrifyingly realistic vision of the future that I couldn‘t handle it. I need something a little more escapist!

The concept of Cloud and its MotherClouds where workers live and work felt all too real after hearing stories of Amazon, Facebook and Google. At first I thought this was going to be another book just like The Circle. But this added a layer of corporate espionage and someone who we know from the start is not who or what they say they are. Definitely a page turner and I enjoyed it from start to finish. #reviewathon book 8.

All is not as it seems though in this dystopian tale that feels prescient and the power these companies wield is what makes this so utterly scary. Will Zinnia complete her task, Will Paxton become a company guy? Just how far will Cloud go to keep its secrets?

A completely mesmerising and compelling tale of our possible future…..absolutely petrifying and brilliant……a MUST read cautionary tale.

The mantra of the market dictates pervades every part of this novel. We want cheap products delivered quickly. What are we prepared to sacrifice to get what we want? In the Cloud, we see the brutal work environment, the Draconian ratings system and how those in charge are prepared to take some very 'grey area' decisions in order to give the consumer exactly what they want. And how people fight against it. A scary possible future....

This #dystopian novel is just near-future and realistic enough that it's creepy as all get-out. Smart and clever in a relaxed, never-pretentious style. Definitely a page-turner. I loved hating the Cloud CEO. The Le Guin reference at the end ties in perfectly, and another quote made my anarchist-leaning heart happy and energized. This is an entertaining book, yes, but we should pay attention to its messages and consider ourselves warned.
