Apeirogon: A Novel | Colum McCann
65 posts | 45 read | 65 to read
From celebrated Irish writer Colum McCann comes a dazzling new novel set in Occupied Palestine and Israel. In an astonishing act of the imagination, McCann illuminates the political situation that has riven the region for more than seventy years in a completely new light. Using a fascinating blend of real events and people, he fictionalizes their stories. As the author says, This is a hybrid novel with invention at its core, a work of storytelling which, like all storytelling, weaves together elements of speculation, memory, fact and imagination. McCann tells the story of Bassam Aramin, a Palestinian, and Rami Elhanan, an Israeli, and how they came together after the terrible loss of both of their daughters, one to suicide bombers and the other to Israeli police. Parents from both sides who have lost loved ones gather together in a Parents Circle to tell their stories, to heal, and to never forget their unimaginable losses. Deploying a myriad of seemingly unrelated historical, cultural and biographical snapshots, this highly original and inventive novel reframes the never-ending IsraeliPalestinian conflict. The result is a breath-taking narrative based on events that actually happened. McCann says, Bassam and Rami have allowed me to shape and reshape their worlds. Despite these liberties, I hope to remain true to the actual realities of their shared experiences. Apeirogon is a completely mesmerizing novel. Driven by a compelling voice, Colum McCann has written a powerful and haunting narrative that is simply masterful in its universal implications.

This was Februarys #readyourkindle book. It took me so long to read because it‘s such a worthwhile, heartfelt and powerful read but it‘s also full of grief and sadness (written very profoundly but succinctly, and repeated) so I was just reading it in small bursts. I loved it.

After a week of feeling rubbish we decided to book a last minute weekend away. So nice reading in bed while it‘s raining outside (and the kids are playing with their Nana) 🩷

I‘m making my way through this slowly but steadily - those small chapters sure pack a punch. I am loving the writing. Feels like a timely read.

I‘ve had either a stomach bug or food poisoning so I‘ve not read this month (just listened to an audiobook now & again). Still don‘t feel 100% but hoping I‘ll get to read some of the tagged book today, which is from Febs #tbrtarot & #readyourkindle

5⭐️ An amazing mosaic!

This novel unapologetically advocates for the end to Palestinian occupation, so this won‘t be for everyone. It is a blend of fact & fiction, which some readers haven‘t liked, but I loved. It isn‘t over dramatized rather it is humanized in intelligent and sometimes brutally realistic ways.

The apeirogon as a metaphor and structure for the novel is brilliant - so appropriate to the boundless “sides” of the conflict.

Tamra Apparently I need to get my hands a paper copy because it has photos and the structure reveals itself more readily. I haven‘t read 1001 Arabians Nights, so I won‘t get all of the references. 😏 (edited) 5mo

I‘m only 18% and really enjoying this timely novel. I love McCann assumes the reader is intelligent enough to pick up what he‘s putting down and isn‘t resorting to soap opera drama.

McCann narrates and I could listen to his voice all day.

This book is heavy. Heavy on the topic, heavy on the feels and loaded with different kinds of facts, all connected to the main story. Sometimes it was a lot to take in, and of course it's always difficult if a foreigner writes about something so delicate as the relationship between Israel and Palestine. But McCann did a good job, as far as I can say. Because he writes about humanity, about loss, friendship, connection, family. ⬇

Jari-chan About becoming something bigger, about facing your fears, about dealing with the worst in a kind and forgiving way. There is a chance for peace. We have to keep believing that. Keep acting that way. As we see here it's possible. It is.

I have just finished Apeirogon and I think it will stay with me for a long time. Told using short snippets of information and related facts. Set in Israel, it touches on the relationship between Jewish and Palestinian residents. At times I had to reach for google to look up a location, or more information about a fascinating historical story. A story of love and hope, and making the most of a terrible situation💗
Next another story of love.💓✌🏼

I *really* don't understand why #silver is as vastly underutilized for book designs as it is. Done right, as it was with one of my favorite covers of '20, it's elegant, memorable & eye-catching all at once. #wishesandblessings @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Rehesina Do you think it‘s because light colours might dirty more easily? 2y
vivastory @Rehesina I don't know bc white is a somewhat common color for book designs. I think maybe marketing thinks that it's too bland 🤷‍♂️ 2y
Rehesina @vivastory possibly! Or maybe it‘s because they don‘t stand out as much in pictures and publishers really want to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible? I mean I‘d like a silver or grey book, but as a publisher I‘d want to squeeze out all the marketing I can! 2y

The title alone describes the complicated multiple sides of a polygon shape as in life as a personification of the Israeli-Palenstine war which is very current today. At the forefront of this novel is the real life Bassam Aramin and Rami Elhanam, two fathers from opposite sides who lost their children in the conflict but find common ground and a friendship to find a peaceful resolution. Told with prose, this is a beautiful literary read.

Apeirogon- a shape with a countably infinite number of sides.
Bassam Aramin is Palestinian. Rami Elhanan is Israeli. They have both lost young daughters as a result of the fighting between their countries. They decided to try and use their grief as a weapon for peace. This is all true. However, the book consists of fictional and nonfictional material. The structure is creative. The story is heartbreaking.

Incredible.
The choppiness of the book - numbers (chapters?) Are constant and it takes a bit to get used to. But the book is so original. Filled with history, small random seeming facts of the world, all interspersed between the stories of Bassam and Rami and their dead children.
The book is good for people with any level of knowledge on Palestinian & Isreal.
The writing is gorgeous and structurally unique.

A view of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict through the eyes of two fathers who each lost a daughter and both work for peace. The nonfiction base story is powerful. I‘m not sure McCann‘s take adds much other than, admirably, adding a lot of exposure to their story.

There is a lot to unpack and appreciate in this work. The core story is about the surprising friendship of two men that should be adversaries and their shared heartbreak and determination for peace. It is also an intricately drawn portrait of our interconnectedness to each other and the natural world. An apeirogan is a polygon with an infinite number of countable sides. This world is equally simple and complex. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m struggling with some things at the moment, which is why I‘m not around much. Listening to this book helped me a bit the last few weeks. It isn‘t perfect, and I‘m sure opinions will differ regarding the Israel/Palestine conflict (which I know too little about), but what this book did right (imo) was showing the grief and heartbreak of Rami and Bassam. It felt real (because it is) and raw, and my heart broke a thousand times over for them 💔

Gut-punch of a book. “Apeirogon”=shape w/ an “observably infinite number of sides,” much like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Having lost young daughters to violent acts, Bassam Aramin & Rami Elhanan join a group for bereaved parents seeking peace. Friendship & grief. 1001 short chapters, fragments like bomb shrapnel? But structure also annoying, like laying out research notecards. Sebald did it better. Rich & moving, if fractured & messy. 2020

I was surprised that an Irish author dares to write about the Israelian-Palestinian conflict. But he does a good job, mostly because the story is based on the true lifes of Rami and Bassan who both lose a daughter in the conflict. The book touched me especially because it tries to stay objective. I can‘t judge if it succeeds completely but I read it as the story of two men who have much more in common than most are willing to admit. ⬇️⬇️

BarbaraBB I even allowed myself to hope that there can be peace among them. That if the people want it and act upon in, governments shall follow eventually. (edited) 4y

Cinfhen I think you wrote a beautiful review and I thought this book would touch you. I‘m glad you were immersed. My problem is the hybrid of fact and fiction and it‘s never clear where those lines are crossed. 4y
Cinfhen Also Rami, the Israeli has a very specific viewpoint that does not truly represent most Israeli citizens so when he speaks as the voice of “Israel” and “Bassam” speaks as a Palestine it‘s not always a true representation of the people ( if that makes sense) 4y
Cinfhen I do think it‘s a beautiful friendship that unfortunately was created by grief and tragedy 4y
BarbaraBB I was afraid it wouldn‘t be a true representation, I knew he had to deal with much opposition in Israel but I didn‘t know the extent of it. And I knew you would. It‘s a thin line between fact en fiction in this book, you are right. Thanks for explaining ❤️❤️ @Cinfhen (edited) 4y

Multiple parables layered into an extremely well curated composition. A fractured abstraction of personal tragedy and grand political dilemmas. And a timeless reminder to keep searching for the common ground instead of our devisions. This very dramatic account of human suffering touched me so deeply that i had to stop many times because listening grew to intense. I can‘t believe this didn‘t make the booker shortlist?!

I can see why this book is longlisted for the Booker Prize. There were elements of it that I really liked - the unusual format, the stream of consciousness style writing and the circular connective elements such as the birds and the water.

However, I was uncomfortable with the juxtaposition of fact, fantasy and fiction. It worried me that I might not be getting the true story of these two men. I know that a book is always, by nature, ⬇️

squirrelbrain a singular POV but, the fact that these events actually happened and you weren‘t sure what the author was embellishing didn‘t sit well with me. I also feel that I didn‘t learn much about the history of this region, from any POV, as it was all a bit vague, again as a result of facts being novelised. Still a pick though, and definitely a ‘Booker‘ book! 4y

Just popped to my (very) local tiny library, only 10 minutes walk away. I haven‘t been for a few years but they had this book on the shelves which I wanted. #bookerlonglist2020.

It‘s an offshoot of the main public library in town. They tried to close it about 5 years ago so now it‘s volunteer-run but still part of the main system.

Pickpick

An incredible blend of fact and fiction. Engrossing, unique and beautiful. And so very sad. I loved it. Hope it wins the Booker 🤞.

Heideschrampf I‘ve just started the audio today and i‘m already enthralled after an hour! 4y

“Thy took a plane to Berlin, went to the last remnants of the Wall. End the preoccupation, he whispered to Bassam. They laughed quietly. At the Shalom Rollberg centre, Rami said to the audience that all walls were destined to fall, no matter what. He was not so naive, though, to believe that more would not be built. It was a world of walls. Still, it was his job to insert a crack in the one most visible to him“ (401).
