Nos recuerda a It. Halfway reading my 1st Stephen King novel. Saw the series adaptation on HBO Go last 2022 and I kind of started this book back then but wasn't able to continue. Here's to start of clearing my backlogs under my Currently Reading list and reading more King books that I already saw its film or tv adaptation.

A compelling mystery in its own right, The Outsider nevertheless begins to truly sing halfway through when Holly Gibney enters the fray. Once again faced with unraveling the truth behind the actions and abilities of an unimaginable killer, Holly shines throughout, applying her dedicated brand of dogged deduction to an unpredictable investigation, and aided by a supporting cast of extremely likable newcomers. 5/5

I have already seen the HBO series (it was one of the things that inspired me to get the book) so I knew how things would play out. But I love King's writing and it was still suspenseful for me. And now I have to.back and read the other Holly Gibney books before I get to Holly. Such a chore. 😀

I FINALLY finished The Outsider. I thought I was going to give it a so-so because the first half was boring in places and far too long; however, the second half was not boring and I ended up liking it. I love Holly, and there was no reason for the first half of the book, before Holly shows up, to be so tedious.

The Outsider was published in 2018; I get Stephen King‘s books as soon as they are released. So I‘ve been reading this book off and on for about 5 years. I‘m determined to finish it this month. It‘s cloudy, grey, and depressing outside, so it‘s a good day to get some reading done.

BookwormAHN Now since I have read the books with Holly in order, I like her a lot better. She is less weird, maybe? I'm looking forward to Holly when we get to it. 10mo

Bklover I did not get to The Outsider this month! So sorry! 10mo
5feet.of.fury This was one of my favorites for a few reasons. the premise has a backstory rooted in mythology, sometimes when King has a supernatural element it‘s never fully explained or even attempted to be explained (or the explanation is cuckoo). the wives were killing it, Jeannie was an awesome side character. & the whole thing was so creepy. It was really quotable too, the repeated “if I believe this, then there‘s no end to the universe” 10mo
5feet.of.fury @BookwormAHN I haven‘t read Holly yet either, this was my first read through of these but if I had not read Bill Hodges I def would not have understood the deal with Holly, which I am glad I did because I liked seeing her take control but also say “this is too crazy for me, lost pets & bail jumpers from now on” 🤣 10mo
5feet.of.fury Also I just looked up the cast for the HBO adaptation …I might need to watch this 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Bklover no worries!!! @5feet.of.fury yes! He did such a great job with this one. All of the history of the Outsider was so interesting and also a little nuts. I watched the movie when it came out but I don‘t remember much except that I liked the Holly in the Mr Mercedes series so much better. Maybe because I saw it first? I struggle with change 🤣 10mo
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead the actress in Mr Mercedes was a perfect casting. but I saw Jason Bateman as Coach T & I am intrigued 10mo
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury Jason Bateman 😍 10mo

In the running for being my favorite King. The premise & pacing was perfect, it was creepy. So creepy.

A heinous crime is investigated by Det. Ralph Anderson who concludes the perpetrator is an upstanding member in the community, only his alibi is as airtight as the evidence against him.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The one Holly Gibney dubs “The Outsider” brings hell and … eats sadness? Heinous crimes, but solid alibis force you to suspend belief, or rather believe in the wholly unexpected. Forensic trickery? Or the supernatural? Pretty disturbing story. I had a little trouble visualizing, but King always spins enthralling stories. Def could‘ve been shorter, though. Dude can be long winded.

Sigh. Well, first #Scarathlon book complete. I really enjoyed it…right up to the end. So much build up for an ending that felt shockingly easy. Bleh. I think I‘ll pass on the HBO television iteration but I will prob continue with the followup novel bc I‘d like to get to his latest, ‘Holly‘, who was an important character in this.

#Scarathlon Photo Challenge - Day 1 - Black

This is my first pick for the month, bc you can‘t go wrong with the King of Horror. So much traveling and walking today, so got a solid chunk done.

Also, this was apparently turned into a television series? Will have to check it out if I get the time….

#TeamWhoYaGonnaCall

FlynnDewey I really enjoyed the book. And read by Will Patton?! Nice! I love his work! He was great in The Punisher! (2004) I couldn't get into the series, myself. They made minor changes that seemed so unnecessary to me lol. I'm picky when it comes to adaptations. (Do *not* get me started on the Jason Bourne films.) 13mo
Melismatic @FlynnDewey I find it odd that so few King adaptations are faithful to his writing. Maybe bc they are typically so long? Who even knows. 😒 13mo
FlynnDewey @Melismatic I think it's also hard to faithfully bring his stuff to life as it doesn't usually translate. There was a 90s mini-series of The Shining (starring Steven Weber as Jack) that was closer to the book, but felt much campier. Also, he can't be left in charge. Or we get delicious disasters like Maximum Overdrive lol. 13mo
Melismatic @FlynnDewey so true 😂😂 13mo

Also what a book to binge listen to when you're 37weeks preggo 😜
While a twisted crime against a child (that is described) it is not overly dwelled upon in miniscule details meaning you can (probably) get past that.
Such a King novel so obviously Terry *can't* have done it, or consciously? Or...??? Read on!

I‘ve watched the show on HBO and liked it. I thought it was more unnerving than the book. El Cuco turns out to be an old legend but King puts his own twist on it. El Cuco isn‘t the Doppelgänger you‘re used to…it‘s something far worse.

I listened to the audio with the same narrator as for the Mr. Mercedes series, I believe. Holly Gibney from that series also makes an appearance in this one. This was really good. Things seemed like a done-deal on both sides, but almost right away, I figured it couldn‘t have been Terry. In any case, how in the world could there be such convincing evidence on both sides? It certainly had me wanting to know more
