Fall of Marigolds
Fall of Marigolds | Susan Meissner
A beautiful scarf, passed down through the generations, connects two women who learn that the weight of the world is made bearable by the love we give away.... September 1911. On Ellis Island in New York Harbor, nurse Clara Wood cannot face returning to Manhattan, where the man she loved fell to his death in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Then, while caring for a fevered immigrant whose own loss mirrors hers, she becomes intrigued by a name embroidered onto the scarf he carries and finds herself caught in a dilemma that compels her to confront the truth about the assumptions she s made. Will what she learns devastate her or free her? September 2011. On Manhattan s Upper West Side, widow Taryn Michaels has convinced herself that she is living fully, working in a charming specialty fabric store and raising her daughter alone. Then a long-lost photograph appears in a national magazine, and she is forced to relive the terrible day her husband died in the collapse of the World Trade Towers the same day a stranger reached out and saved her. Will a chance reconnection and a century-old scarf open Taryn s eyes to the larger forces at work in her life?"

If I remember correctly, this was a #buddyread awhile back. Or I read it for my book club. I know I enjoyed this dual timeline novel very much.

A dual timeline historical fiction following two women struggling with grief after losing loved ones in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and 9/11, respectively. The earlier heroine‘s story features more prominently, and we learn a lot about the hospital on Ellis Island. Meissner‘s character development is very well done, and I love her writing style. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (50-in-50)

New York City. Two women, a century apart, processing and grieving their losses due to tragedy. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in 1911, and September 11, 2001. A beautiful scarf, strewn with marigolds, connects them. What a story! Sad, but ultimately hopeful, about the time we spend in the “in-between place” between paralyzing grief and normal daily living. I loved this book.

Book 35

I listened to A Fall of Marigolds, a historical fiction novel about a scarf set in New York during the triangle shirtwaist fire in the early 1900s and September 11. It was a longer than necessary and a little misleading. My least favorite Meissner so far, but worth reading, overall. ⭐⭐⭐.5

Told in the POV of two traumatized women a century apart.Clara witnesses a loved one‘s death in the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, while Taryn witnesses 9/11 & loses her husband when a tower collapses.Their lives parallel, then intersect by a scarf.Clara grieves by immersing herself in nursing on Ellis Island, while Taryn folds her grief in upon herself& retreats to her fabric store. Both confront their trauma & grief with the help of the scarf.

4⭐️ I quite enjoyed it. I first heard about the book through the Currently Reading podcast, where it was mentioned by one of the cohosts. I particularly enjoyed the historical aspect of the book, with the more contemporary portion was a bit of a disappointment. Overall it was a fairly good read. #bookstagram #historicalfiction #fiction #2020 #bookreview #contemporary #911

I loved this book! It is exactly the kind of book I love to read. It takes you to another place and time and tells a beautiful story. Then it ties you to today and completes that story. I loved how it all came together at the end. It brought tears to my eyes. I will remember this story for a long time.

This is a perfect September read. The 2 historic fiction stories set in NYC revolve around 2 women 100 years apart. There is a beautiful scarf connection. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, Ellis Island, 9/11, etc. It would also make a nice vacation read.

8/10 I enjoyed the book, but went away feeling a little disappointed. The characters are well written, but almost come across as flat. The end of the book ties everything together in a neat package, but the story feels unfinished. There is both too much and not enough information. Worth the read, may try to read again at a later date.

I do enjoy a book where an object connects the present with the past, incorporating two storylines. In this case, it‘s two tragic days in #NYC, #911 and the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.

@squirrelbrain have you read this one? 😉

Thanks for letting me celebrate with you! It was tough to choose my favorite book from 2017 but I ended up narrowing it down to the tagged book and The Book That Matters Most. I ended up choosing this one because it was so unexpected. I expected to love TBTMM but I almost didn‘t read A Fall of Marigolds because of a lackluster back cover description. I am so happy I did- this book exceeded anything I could have hoped for!

This book was chosen for my irl book club. I almost didn‘t read it because the description on the back didn‘t sound very appealing to me but I decided to go for at the last minute to expand my horizons. I am so glad I did! I loved this story and had a hard time putting it down once I got rolling. This may be my favorite pick from this book club in the last year. Highly recommended.

thebluestocking I love book club surprises like that! This one sounds great. 6y

#TBRtemptation post 4! A scarf ties 2 women together 100 years apart. In 1911, Clara witnesses her lover's death in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire & grieves by caring for the sick on Ellis Island, where she meets an ill mourning widower & his scarf. 100 years later, Taryn's life parallels Clara's. Her husband died in the WTC, & she recedes to her fabric shop job & daughter. Her pain is confronted by a certain scarf. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

It's a wonderful book about true love, loss and overcoming grief. The story and characters are very classy and full of history not to mention a hint of poetry. The take away is fulfilled expectations not being as satisfying as the dream of them.

Enjoyed this easy read. A light historical fiction set in New York City and Ellis island. The story follows two characters, one from the past, and one from the present as they both come to terms with love lost after a tragic event. Both women are connected by the same scarf. The author does a good job of weaving the story together between the two women.
