If we understand how the tree works, how the trunk and roots are where the power lies, and how gravity is on our side, we can attack it, each of us with small axes, and change the face of the forest. So let‘s learn all there is to know about the tree of racism. The root. The fruit. The sap and trunk. The nests built over time, the changing leaves. That way, your generation can finally, actively chop it down.

SqueakyChu This is a book I definitely want to read. I‘ve read two other of Kendi‘s books which left a big impression on me. I‘ll tell you about this when I see you. Do you have this book to BookCross to me perhaps? 🤞 2y
KateKintail @SqueakyChu I think I would like to keep it for my permanent collection. But if you want to borrow it for some time, absolutely! I will bring it to you at a meet-up! This was my second time reading it, and I still feel like there is a lot more to process. 2y
SqueakyChu I‘d love to borrow it and return it. I‘ve read two other of Kendi‘s books and found both of them valuable. 2y

Great book. Read it with my teenagers. Lots of history you won't learn in school. Don't just be not-racist, be anti-racist!

I read this book after a colleague of mine had her class read it in U.S. History. Written for a young audience and so much history in 240 pages, left me wanting more, which is the point! I can see my middle school niece loving it.

This one has been on my to-read list for awhile. I‘m so glad @JackOBotts had it on the #nywd22 #newyearwhodis list prompting me to finally pick it up.

All the praise for this one is well deserved. Some of this I knew, some of it was new to me and all of it was written with passion and humor. I will likely be purchasing a copy for my own shelves and I‘ve told my son he should read this as well.

Tagged is one of my current reads which I‘m loving so far.

lostinwords Although I‘ve owned the book shortly after it was released, my new found love of audiobooks has inspired me to get going with meeting my 2022 reading goals and read some that I‘ve owned forever. America, us, people are still waking up and facing more of our ugly despicable history that has impacted our ugly truthful present. Where does one stand-even now. I can only see them as friends if I really see them. I can only see them if I can see me. (edited) 3y

There is soooo much that I wasn‘t taught in history classes, textbooks. So much. There‘s been a massive cover up, and it‘s all exposed now. Shameful, that any of it ever happened. But what‘s more shameful, is now the powerful leaders don‘t want us to know or talk about it. Highly recommend this one! More on banned books: https://www.npr.org/2021/09/30/1041610286/during-banned-books-week-readers-explo...

Chrissyreadit Do you go to or work at Marshall? I‘m glad they make a statement about not banning books. WV is full of contradictions. 3y
JenniferEgnor @Chrissyreadit I don‘t, I‘m in SC. I was looking for a screenshot about this book being banned, and there were so many spots to choose from. It‘s alarming, that we are seeing this happen. ‘Selective storytelling incidents‘…isn‘t that how American history is taught? Stamped, stamped, and stamped again. 3y
Chrissyreadit @JenniferEgnor the only thing I‘m ok with about book banning is it typically gets more people to read the book and because of the internet people are foolish to ban information- although I realize it works both ways with false info too. 3y
JenniferEgnor @Chrissyreadit you‘re absolutely right. Banning only gives it more attention. And yes, it does work both ways. But I think a line should be drawn when information causes real harm. All it takes, is one lie. 3y
Chrissyreadit @JenniferEgnor I completely agree! There must be regulations against purposefully spreading lies dangerously! 3y

Turned out, freedom in America was like quicksand. It looked solid until a Black person tried to stand on it. Then it became clear it was a sinkhole.

This book is awesome. It is clear and concise, but also funny and just a little cheeky. I can see kids really enjoying this book. Kendi and Reynolds make it very clear that the belief that any group is better or worse is racist. This is not racist against anyone. It mentions white people who hold antiracist views throughout history and black people who hold racist and assimilationist views throughout history. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics It also mentions how this is all made worse by sexism and homophobia. It‘s really the trifecta of what conservatives fear. That‘s the only thing they‘re objecting to. I imagine their kids don‘t mind the book at all. It‘s the parents with the problem. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics The claim that the book contains “selective storytelling incidents” is absurd. If that‘s all it takes to ban a history book (or not a history book in this case), then every single history book on the planet, most especially K12 textbooks need to be banned too. There would be nothing for historians to study in graduate school because they ALL do that. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics No, this doesn‘t go into great depth about racism against other people, but that‘s not its scope, and it‘s honest about that. Rather than banning this book, if this is the true objection, encourage the writing of another book for indigenous people, another for Asian people, another for Hispanic people, etc. so experts in those fields can tell those stories. No one book is going to cover everything, nor should it try. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 3y

GingerAntics I‘d love to know which “public statements of the author” people are upset about. The only ones I‘ve heard boil down to “racism is bad, let‘s work together to stop being racist.” If you have a problem with that, if you have a problem with your child learning that, the problem is not this book, the author, or his public statements. #Stamped #IbramXKendi #JasonReynolds #audiobook #BannedBooksWeek 3y
kspenmoll Great book for students. 3y

Brilliant adaptation of Kendi‘s Stamped from the Beginning. Reynolds does a fantastic job taking Kendi‘s text and making it digestible for younger readers without sacrificing impact. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m sure you all are sick of me posting about this book, but you guys! 😯 It has so much history in it that we never learned in school. I‘m learning more important things about the presidents and who they were and what their policies were and how those things affected other things with this book than I ever did in school. Possibly, I am older and more interested and this is more meaningful to me now as an adult. However, this is still ⬇️

katy4peas Something that we barely touched on in school. We spent maybe a week on MLK and I can‘t name all of the presidents. 🤷‍♀️ 4y
katy4peas I am learning from a new perspective about presidents and these things will stick with me and help me remember these so-called leaders. It is unfortunate in a way that the first thing I am learning about these people is about their racist policies. On the other hand... our leaders have always been racist and we need to work on fixing that. 💪🏽 This book is so interesting to me😯🤔😡😢🥰 and gives me tons of feels. 4y
Come-read-with-me I thought this was an amazing book. Glad you‘re finding so many life lessons in it! 4y

“Barry Goldwater, a senator from AZ, was also running (for president). Goldwater was ushering in a new kind of conservatism. His platform was that government assistance, which White people had been receiving for a long time, was bad for human beings, that it turned people into animals. Of course, this racist epiphany hit Goldwater once Black people started receiving government assistance too. Funny how that happens, yet not funny at all. “

I really enjoyed this book, learning some new truths of our country‘s history and exploring how racism has been perpetuated over time to look different but to remain in place to support those in power. I really wanted to delve in more to many of the topics but thought this was a great short and easy read that covered so much in an enjoyable and informative way!

I received this book as an ARC but it got lost in the shuffle and I'm ashamed to have only just now read it. I'm a proud American but I sure was reaffirmed how little we have learned from our own history by reading this, definitely adding the initial book to my TBR list.

If I could pick anyone as my writing instructor, I'd pick Jason Reynolds. Right of the bat, he says this is not a history book. He's right; unlike many history books, Stamped is neither dry nor bores the reader with trivial information. Instead, Reynolds manages to present Ibram X Kendi‘s longer work in a conversational style that is easily digestible by the YA audience.
