Local Woman Missing (Original) | Mary Kubica
121 posts | 192 read | 1 reading | 76 to read
People don't just disappear without a trace... Shelby Tebow is the first to go missing. Not long after, Meredith Dickey and her six-year-old daughter, Delilah, vanish just blocks away from where Shelby was last seen, striking fear into their once-peaceful community. Are these incidents connected? After an elusive search that yields more questions than answers, the case eventually goes cold. Now, eleven years later, Delilah shockingly returns. Everyone wants to know what happened to her, but no one is prepared for what they'll find... In this smart and chilling thriller, master of suspense and New York Times bestselling author Mary Kubica takes domestic secrets to a whole new level, showing that some people will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried.

4.5⭐

This was mystery so well written that I didn't pick up on any clues whatsoever until the author was outright ready to make it known. And once the first piece fell into place the others followed suit with brilliant and seamless intention. Another thrilling read from Kubica! #audiobook

This is not my normal type of read because I‘m very sensitive to suspense/thriller/scary things. Luckily it‘s such a page-turner that you have to get through it quickly. Had me guessing all the way through!

I really, really liked the first 95% of this book…but I really, really hated the end of the book! It just had me saying “oh come ON”. This could have been a 5 star for me if not for that ending 😆. It‘s HIGHLY readable though and a page turner! (6)

I listened to this on audio. Overall, it was entertaining, and there was an interesting twist. My big complaint is that the author went out of her way to disparage education and health-care workers. These are two groups that receive enough grief.

It was a tough choice, but Local Woman Missing was my favorite of the month, but it cannot beat Lightbringer, which was so incredible and will be tough to beat for favorite of the year. #ReadingBracket2023

Wow, this is one twisty thriller. It opens with a woman going a run to cheat on her husband. Than a girl escaping captivity. How do these two events intersect? The story switches between POV‘s and timelines and gradually reveals the full story. This was excellent and a real surprise reveal. Moving to one of my favorite thrillers. 5⭐️

You‘ll be dizzy with all the twists and turns, although it does become predictable at a certain point. While there are many characters that are emotionally hurt in this book, my heart reached out to Leo. The little brother who is overshadowed by his sisters disappearance, a mom whose supposed suicide left him motherless at a age too young for him to remember her, and a father too grief stricken to be there for him. You‘ll breeze through this read!

I would have listened to this in one sitting if I had the time. I‘ve read enough thrillers to have guessed some parts of the ending, but I was entertained from start to finish. #thrillers

Excellent start to the book, really grabbed my attention. But soon started to flop.

The way the author wrote about trauma / victim care made no sense. It's 2023. There's research everywhere. Along with the unnecessary trauma dumping that had no relation to the plot. Not a great choice.

The ending was a bit far fetched and i only liked 1 character. Although, I did like the storyline and the short chapters.

Solid 2 stars for me.

My reading spot today 😍😍😍 a local spot just 10 minutes from my apartment. So peaceful.

Loving this book so far. Read half the book yesterday! 📖 Creepy and intriguing, with unreliable narrators. The only thing is I don't quite like the characters or some of the plotlines from the standpoint of victim rights... makes no sense to me.

But nonetheless I'm enjoying this!

Been reading in my car with the windows down the last 2 hours. My porch isn't set up yet and it is too beautiful of a day to be inside.

Not too weird of a place to read by any means, but where is the weirdest place you have read?

This book is creeepy so far yikes. But definitely a quick read that is keeping my interest.

RebL I appreciate the ingenuity, & I hope you get your porch set up soon. 2y

When Delilah was 6, she and her mother went missing. Now, 11 years later, Delilah has returned home, unable to explain what happened.

Perhaps because the shocking truth is too cruel to consider.

This tale begins with a scary, utterly intense nightmare scenario. It felt like I was reading the final act right at the start (so vivid it was almost like a movie!). After that, a compelling, slowly unraveling mystery kept me hooked to the very end.🪝📖

Read in one sitting! I waited weeks for this from my local library, worth every second of that wait. I enjoyed the book set up to go from the past to the present and the three narrators. I thought I had it figured out but didn‘t! First read by author, will read more! *POSSIBLE SPOILER* I wouldn‘t recommend if you are triggered by difficult birthing experiences, miscarriages, or bad OBGYN appointments. I felt some chapters were very graphic.

LoverOfLearning Agreed. They just were not necessary to the plot. It did not need to he added. I have no triggers like that and it was very difficult for me to read. 2y

I love discovering new authors and this was one of them! This was such a good book from start to finish. The only thing I “disliked” (and that word is still not the best to use) is the chapters from Leo‘s point of view. They didn‘t feel completely necessary. All they really achieved was the build up to tell us the first girl they found wasn‘t his sister. Nonetheless, this was overall a great book and well worth the read!

I loved the first 75% of this book and was so invested in the stories of the women. As the story developed, I was intrigued with the complexities of each character, along with the author touching on themes related to everyday challenges of women. I really thought this would be a 5 star rating for me, but sadly I couldn't get on board with the direction it took. It left me saying “oh come on!“ Sadly, this is a pass for me

Meh... this was an interesting little twisty story. I was thrown off a few times & didn't see the end coming. That being said, I thought all the "good" characters were syrupy sweet & so naively trusting of everyone else. Leo was the only character that felt even close to real to me.

I have yet to find a Mary Kubica book that I don't devour, this one didn't disappoint either. Missing women and a child, the child returns to the town they went missing from, nothing seems quite right and it isn't. I loved the multiple points of view and dual time lines, they kept me on edge and not able to put this book down easily.Twisty,it had me caught up in it from the very beginning until the last page and I am still thinking about it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

So many people love this book and this author so I guess I‘m the exception to the rule but storylines that rely entirely on people lying to themselves and everyone else are not “suspenseful” or “twisty” to me.

I found this book annoying, from start to finish.

There was a character named like my dog Delilah, though, so I guess I give it only 4 eyeball rolls for a rating instead 5. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

June 2, 2022 OMG its summer time Listers!!! I have been putting down and picking up this book at least 5 times (not that i want to) and i cannot stop reading it. IT IS THAT GOOD. Mary Kubica may be one of the best (because there are other mystery thriller writer) authors that I have read by. She keeps making the suspense suspenseful. I am not here to give away spoilers but let's just say that this book ends with a happy ending 🤐

A stellar mystery. Heart-breaking, but very well crafted. Kept me guessing til the end. I love when I can‘t guess the ending because there are so many potential outcomes. The author does a wonderful job of giving the reader many leads to figure out whodunnit. Overall, excellent.
