Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery | Brom
101 posts | 63 read | 2 reading | 54 to read
Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it. Connecticut, 1666. An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector. The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil. To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help. Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake. If it is a devil you seek, then it is a devil you shall have! This terrifying tale of bewitchery features more than two dozen of Broms haunting paintings, fully immersing readers in this wild and unforgiving world. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

1st book of 2026 down! This was a different type of story than I usually read but I enjoyed it so completely. Highly recommend.

“…And there was something about these people that horrified Abitha even worse than those whose faces were lined with cruelty. As at least cruelty was a thing that could be pointed out, confronted. But this belief, this absolute conviction that this evil they were doing was good, was God‘s work — how, she wondered, how could such a dark conviction ever be overcome?”

Though I loved The Wanderer, More Weight edged it out as my favorite read from October to December. The Hike then surpassed More Weight to advance—only to be defeated in the final matchup of the year by Slewfoot. A thoroughly deserving winner, Slewfoot earns my Book of the Year for 2025. 😊 #readingbracket #bookbracket #readingbracket2025 #bookbracket2025 #bookoftheyear #bookoftheyear2025

This book was good, I just didn‘t love it. Not my usual type of story. The MC Abitha is great. A woman full of rage and revenge in a town of Puritan men and woman makes for a kick butt character which is what makes this story. It took me a bit to get into it but once it gets going, it doesn‘t let up.

Slewfoot is masterful. Sinister, hypnotic, spooky, enraging, victorious. A delectable pairing of puritan culture and female RAGE, garnished with a primal dose of earthly power and folktale rapture. An absolute treasure for spooky season. Highly recommend reading a physical copy of the book with Brom's paintings of the characters. 10/10 reading experience and a lush tale I will return to.

My #MidYearRecap Part 1

Favorite - Slewfoot, but it was a close tie between it and Love and Other Words. ❤️

Worst - Stone Heart. I feel like this book needed to be longer. Everything happened so fast. Very insta-love. Katee Robert might not be for me.

Biggest Surprise - Venom & Lace. A coworker recommended this me. I didn't think I was going to like it, but I had such a fun time.

I've read some fantastic books this year, making it tough to choose a favorite! After much deliberation, my top read for March was Slewfoot by Brom, with Bad Badger by Maryrose Wood as a close runner-up. The decision was just as difficult when looking back at my January and March reads, but once again, Slewfoot claimed the top spot. #bookbracket #bookbracket2025 #readingbracket #readingbracket2025

A very slow burn of a book, but once it gets to the point of no going back. It‘s a heck of a ride. I adored the main likable characters and despised the awful people who thought better of themselves. If you enjoy people getting payback for horrific treatment caused by lies. You‘ll love this book. This book helped me through the toughest week of my life. In short. This book outlived my mom, by 4 days. Love you forever Momma Cat. 10/3/55 - 3/7/25

Just realized I never put up a review for Slewfoot which was my second book read for #AuldLangSpine I really loved it. Peak feminine rage. Would be a great read for spooky season.

I found 3 of January‘s #WickedWords in Slewfoot and the other 2 in How Not to Die Alone aka Something to Live For.

Just about 20% into Slewfoot and it‘s giving Myth side one / two vibes. I love it so much. I don‘t know if there are any littens here who are also fans of The Narcissist Cookbook but these albums just recently came out in December / January and it‘s a haunting combination of music and folklore style story telling and like this book so far, very eerie. #AuldLangSpine

In the running for my best book of the year. A beautiful dark folklorish tale. Very Grimm. Can vengeance equal justice? Maybe. But it sure makes for a satisfying read. Humans are always the scariest monsters. “If you walk with the beast you become the beast.” All the stars.

My #Recommendation for #HauntedShelf is Slewfoot. I read it last year for #Scarathlon & really enjoyed the dark tale of Abitha, who is fighting against the puritanical community she married into when she meets Samon/Slewfoot the newly awakened devil. Very atmospheric & perfect for the spooky season. 🍁🪄🌘

Loved this. Folklore, growing &changing is met with Christian concepts & corruption of man in colonial New England. Abitha was appropriately sassy without it feeling out of time with the setting. Highly atmospheric & eerie.

#LMPBC Round 20 - Group G (Gothic Horror)• 5 Stars

Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery is a haunting journey set in 1666 colonial New England. The story follows Abitha, a recently widowed woman who struggles against her husband's puritan community as religious fervor escalates into mob mentality. Abitha befriends a forest spirit known as Slewfoot, who awakens hungry and is egged on by other spirits to kill and feed.

I loved this book. Anything Brom writes or illustrates, I‘ll like it. In his latest book, here we have the story of a young woman who is struggling to survive while living within Puritan rule. The misogyny and greed of the powerful men around her ultimately take hold, but the Wild God and his demons provide a chance for revenge. The story makes you think of all the victims of centuries ago. What if there had been someone to come to their aid?⬇️

Thatbooknerd Someone to save their lives, take revenge on the wicked accusers around them? So what, if someone wanted to practice the old ways. Let them. I can‘t stand the thought of the Puritans. Shown: photos my husband and I took in the forest several years ago. What I was trying to show is pretty obvious. It was a lot of fun. 2y

I do not want your service or your soul, reverend man. I just want you to tell them, your breed of people, tell them what happened here. Tell them that the Devil, Slewfoot himself, burned down this church, killed them all…the men, the women, and the children. That he is wicked and cruel and shows no mercy. That he conjured demons and that they danced for him. Tell them to fear this forest, that Slewfoot waits for them there…awaits his chance⬇️
