Far from the Light of Heaven
Far from the Light of Heaven | Tade Thompson
11 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
Tense and thrilling, Far from the Light of Heaven is an unforgettable vision of humanity's future in the chilling emptiness of space by Arthur C. Clarke Award winner Tade Thompson. The colony ship Ragtime docks in the Lagos system, having traveled light-years from home to bring thousands of sleeping souls to safety among the stars. Some of the sleepers, however, will never wake. As a profound and sinister mystery unfolds aboard the gigantic vessel, its skeleton crew makes decisions that will have repercussions for all of humanity's settlementsfrom the scheming politics on Lagos station to the colony planet of Bloodroot, to other far-flung systems, and indeed Earth itself. A soft pick, since it's a good story with a lot of research done. Thompson knows how to tell a story and to keep the reader entertained. But to me it was a bit too much of everything and the scenes change too fast and too often, so I got lost while reading. The story could've used a little more pace as well.
I loved the new way sci-fi is going and Tade Thompson for sure is an important writer for this new path. I'm curious to read more by him.

The audiobook for this one is a little difficult to follow so I had to check out the e-book, too, to make sure I was catching the details. I enjoyed the first half more than the second, and the ending is unsatisfying to me, but overall I found this book to be a very interesting take on both a mystery and a space/sci-fi novel.

An incredible locked-room sci-fi mystery set on a spaceship. When second-in-command Shell Campion wakes from 10 years of hypersleep, she discovers the ship's AI captain has malfunctioned and 30-odd passengers are dead. Who killed them? And why? The first half is tighter than the second but still an overall excellent read.

The book was really great . I disliked the narrator a lot and I almost quit because of it. I found him monotonous. Get the book, skip the audiobook. The story is a great mystery/science fiction combo

What a ride this was! Short chapters, multiple povs, with a plot that moved along at breakneck speed made it hard to put this down! While the ending was a little abrupt, there is room for a sequel, though this books story arc is complete at the end. Though there were a few plot points that were confusing/unnecessary, I enjoyed reading this too much to truly care. The world is fascinating and I enjoyed the characters, particularly Shell and Salvo.

It‘s finally my weekend! I‘m hoping to finish the tagged book at the very least and make some progress on one of my #bookspin/doublespin options. I‘m not going to be super ambitious because I‘m getting my booster shot tomorrow and I got really ill with the 2nd dose. Fingers crossed I don‘t get nearly as sick this time and can get some reading in. @Andrew65

Ahhh!! What can I say? This was a phenomenal book. Shell was a beautifully written character and I hope there is a sequel. If you‘re interested in space travel, this is the one! #freyarecommends #reader #farfromthelightofheaven

Though I tend to gravitate more to the fantasy side over science fiction, I have heard good things about Thompson‘s writing & I really can‘t resist a locked room mystery! This futuristic space-scape hooks the reader right away with originality, strong characters & enough commentary on the landscape of today to make this a great discussion starter without seeming like it‘s being shouted from a soapbox. I‘m eager to checkout the Rosewater trilogy!

Mel Excited to read this one - glad to see you liked it! 3y
