Forty Rooms
Forty Rooms | Olga Grushin
The internationally acclaimed author of The Dream Life of Sukhanov now returns to gift us with Forty Rooms, which outshines even that prizewinning novel.Totally original in conception and magnificently executed, Forty Rooms is mysterious, withholding, and ultimately emotionally devastating. Olga Grushin is dealing with issues of womens identity, of womens choices, that no modern novel has explored so deeply. Forty rooms is a conceit: it proposes that a modern woman will inhabit forty rooms in her lifetime. They form her biography, from childhood to death. For our protagonist, the much-loved child of a late marriage, the first rooms she is aware of as she nears the age of five are those that make up her familys Moscow apartment. We follow this child as she reaches adolescence, leaves home to study in America, and slowly discovers sexual happiness and love. But her hunger for adventure and her longing to be a great poet conspire to kill the affair. She seems to have made her choice. But one day she runs into a college classmate. He is sure of his path through life, and he is protective of her. (He is also a great cook.) They drift into an affair and marriage. What follows are the decades of births and deaths, the celebrations, material accumulations, and home comfortsuntil one day, her children grown and gone, her husband absent, she finds herself alone except for the ghosts of her youth, who have come back to haunt and even taunt her. Compelling and complex, Forty Rooms is also profoundly affecting, its ending shattering but true. We know that Mrs. Caldwell (for that is the only name by which we know her) has died. Was it a life well lived? Quite likely. Was it a life complete? Does such a life ever really exist? Life is, after all, full of trade-offs and choices. Who is to say her path was not well taken? It is this ambiguity that is at the heart of this provocative novel.

Lovely, well-written, relatable, and poignant. This book is very much like many of the dialogues I have with myself as a woman and as an artist. Quietly beautiful and masterfully crafted - this is easily one of the best books I've read this year.

I‘m about halfway through and this book is amazing. It‘s really bringing home so much of the melancholy I‘ve been feeling of late. I don‘t have words to express myself really... I‘m going to need to own a copy. I‘ve had so much time to myself to read lately and it‘s been lovely but it doesn‘t satiate the desire to keep reading and to stay detached from my own wold... #seatosea @BookishTrish @FantasyChick @Andrea4

(She starts) #BackintheUSSR This book is about a woman who was raised in Moscow and comes to the U.S. in hopes of becoming a poet. What happens is not quite what she expects. Every decision she makes is a compromise of herself. The author, Olga, is a poet and takes several artistic liberties in this book. There are paragraphs that are run-on sentences and some events that happen have you questioning what's real. I loved it. #readslikeadream.

So, my book club is meeting and its one of my very favorite things. BUT . . . I haven't read the book. It's reasonably common that someone doesn't finish, but it's very rare that anyone comes without reading at all. Should I stay or should I go?!

RanaElizabeth Stay but don't pretend to have read it. I run a book club and always tell people to come anyway, everybody needs an excuse to get out of the house sometimes, right? 8y
readordierachel Go for it! Going to the meeting might give you some interesting insights for when you read the book later. If your book group is anything like the Litsy community, they'll forgive you :) 8y

Suzze Absolutely stay! The thing that bugged me the most when I ran a book group was when people didn't come because they hadn't read it. That doesn't mean you can't add to the discussion. 8y
Suzze @LindsayReads Yes! We all know, if for some reason we haven't finished, there WILL be spoilers! 8y
CocoReads We always tell our members to come anyway--if they don't mind spoilers we let it all out, if they do we try to be kind. Half the time lately hardly anyone has read the book--it's just an excuse to get out of the house. 8y
minkyb If you plan on reading the book would you want to hear the discussion first? 8y
rubyslippersreads You should go. In both my book clubs, there always someone who didn't read the book. It's just fun to get out of the house and talk books. 8y
LauraBeth Go to book club! 8y
AmyG Ha...we have one person who says she reads the book, yet is always clueless about a specific part of the story. We tolerate her because we are kind. We think she reads about the book on Amazon. ;) Be truthful and enjoy your night out. Sometimes...life interferes and one just can't get the book read. (edited) 8y
heatherkaz Yeah, in mine there's often someone who hasn't read it just because sometimes life gets crazy, but it's always nice to meet anyways for a night out with good company. As long as he/she isn't a repeat offender!😉 8y
readinginthedark In my former book group, there was always one of us who didn't finish. If they liked it enough that they were planning to continue, they'd leave the table for 10-15 minutes so we could have spoiler-y discussions and then come back. 😊 8y

I read this for book club. I like the premise of the forty rooms, the various spaces a person will inhabit in their lifetime physically and spiritually, but as the book went along I liked the main character less and less. She didn't know who she was, ever, so I didn't either.

Wow. It took me a few chapters to get into this, but once I did, it just got better and better. This book should end up on some award short lists. I love books that are unusual (but not weird) in structure. You might need to be over 35 or 40--and maybe a parent or caregiver?--to relate. Wow.
