What's the harm in a pseudonym? New York Times bestselling sensation Juniper Song is not who she says she is, she didn't write the book she claims she wrote, and she is most certainly not Asian American--in this chilling and hilariously cutting novel from R. F. Kuang in the vein of White Ivy and The Other Black Girl. Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena's a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn't even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena's death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena's just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I. So what if June edits Athena's novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song--complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? Doesn't this piece of history deserve to be told, whoever the teller? That's what June claims, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree. But June can't get away from Athena's shadow, and emerging evidence threatens to bring June's (stolen) success down around her. As June races to protect her secret, she discovers exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves. With its totally immersive first-person voice, Yellowface takes on questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation not only in the publishing industry but the persistent erasure of Asian-American voices and history by Western white society. R. F. Kuang's novel is timely, razor-sharp, and eminently readable.

This was like watching a car crash. I couldn‘t look away. Almost every character involved was self-serving and driven by an absolute narcissistic desire for success, but the author was so good and you are so invested in what happens next. The whole plot is really digging at a deeper issue of cultural history and authorship. The ever present threat of social media‘s ire gave it and added weight. Lived up to the hype for me.

Suzze Same. I really enjoyed it. 3d

I‘ve seen this book recommended in many forums, & have been wanting to read it. It drew me in from the start. If you‘ve read it, you know what I mean. I wish the entire book had been as good as the beginning. It‘s definitely a quick read. I can‘t say that any of the characters were likable, nor I don‘t think they were supposed to be.It‘s hard to believe that this is the same author that wrote Babel. The 2 books were so different.

Yellowface addresses many controversial topics of the publishing industry. Who has the right to tell minority stories? How thin is the line between inspired story telling and intellectual theft? Is cancel culture harmful and abusive or effective and just? It certainly made me question my own thoughts and opinions on the subjects! 4/5

This book reads like a dream, a thriller dream and it isn‘t. First chapter, main character‘s college friend dies “In a weird tragic way” who also was a successful writer. Then the “protagonist” who also is a writer, does the unthinkable. We will leave it at that. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Final thoughts!! Thank you all for participating!!

What do you think happens to June after the end of the story??

Have you read other books by this author? Do you plan to? Would you recommend this book??

#LitsyLove
#LitsyLoveReads

Roary47 I liked the book, it was hard not to put it down. I found that I was experiencing my own injustices when reading it, but seeing the other side of that argument was helpful. I think it could be controversial, but it was approached very well. I was seeing that we all kinda hated June and that was an interesting dynamic that our pov character was who we hated. That was new for me. 3w
Cupcake12 It took a while for me to get into. After half way I was hooked. It‘s my first book by the author and I‘d definitely read another. 3w
Teresereading I liked the layers within layers, a cleverly constructed narrative. 3w

REPollock I admit to a sick fascination with literary identity hoaxers—Nadijj, JT Leroy, people who adopt marginalized identities and are disgraced and their writings dismissed when their grift comes to light. What were they thinking would happen? So I was all in on the concept of this. When it became clear June was encouraged in the charade by her editor, the ethics became more complex and even though it reminded me of everything terrible about publishing, 3w
REPollock (Contd) I was hooked. I had already read another book by the author and it was very different and similarly engaging. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It took me a bit to get into and I wanted to dnf, but I didn‘t! I couldn‘t stand any of the characters and I w as bred to shake June! 3w

June falls into a negative spiral. Should authors avoid reading reviews of their books? Should readers tag authors in their negative reviews?

How much truth do you think is in Yellowface? The publishing industry?

What is your opinion of the title of this book? What do you think of the controversy??

#LitsyLove
#LitsyLoveReads

Roary47 I think reading/ writing reviews should be helpful. If you hated the book saying it wasn‘t for me because of xyz. The trolling of someone‘s hard work is just uncalled for. Constructive criticism should be used to tell the author what they can do to make it better, or how to reach a broader audience. 3w
Cupcake12 If you have a hard outer shell, reviews can be of great benefit. I see many authors ask on socials not to be tagged in negative reviews. It has opened my eyes to the publishing industry…is it that shallow? 3w
willaful @Cupcake12 I don't tend to pull punches in my reviews but I don't tag authors. They use social media in the same way others do, as people not just as authors, and if they choose to read negative reviews they want to have control over how and when. 3w

Do you think that either of the authors had the right to write about the Chinese Labor Corps? Should these stories only be written by someone with personal lived experiences with the issues? Were June‘s actions justified when she found out how people felt about her not having any Chinese heritage?

#LitsyLove
#LitsyLoveReads

Roary47 I think that anyone should be able to write a story that has not been told. There are nations that might not have the ability to write, and can provide insight. There are others that have the story, but not the words to express the events that should be documented. However, neither of these girls put in the work with the people from my understanding. My understanding was it was a work of fiction based on true events. 3w
Cupcake12 Anyone can write a story but if it‘s based on a true event than I think it should be only those who have lived and breathe it. As June had no Chinese heritage but it was implied that she shad, I can understood why people turned against her. 3w
LapReader Anyone should be able to tell a story from their point of view or in fiction if they are honest about their bias. June‘s problem was she thought she had. 3w
See All 6 Comments
Maggie4483 I think it‘s dangerous to say that authors should only write about things they personally have experienced, or about groups that they are members of. Then there would be no historical fiction or diversity within stories, and that hurts the literary world. But authors have an obligation to do extensive research and seek out input from members of those groups. June not accepting the sensitivity reader is more proof of her arrogance. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Maggie4483 I totally agree with you! 3w

How do you feel about June changing her name? Was this unethical, deceitful?

#LitsyLove
#LitsyLoveReads

Roary47 Having a pen name was fine. A lot of authors do that, but it she changed her name for this book. Throughout the book we saw that misconception in the people that had her speak about the book, and yeah, they assumed. 3w
Cupcake12 Authors change their name but I felt this was to sell more books based on the target audience. It was deceitful as it made people think she had shared experiences or hardships. 3w
LapReader Hard to not be influenced by the possibility of more sales. She didn‘t come up with this idea just went along with it so I gave her a bit of grace. I liked the sound of it. 3w
See All 7 Comments
Maggie4483 It‘s all the circumstances of the name change combined that makes it problematic. It wouldn‘t have been such an issue if she had published her first book as Juniper Song, or if Song wasn‘t such a common Chinese name, or if the subject matter of the book wasn‘t so deeply rooted in Chinese history. But all those factors together make the motivation behind the name change real suspicious and almost impossible to deny. 3w
Teresereading It was the point of no return 3w
REPollock It‘s a tough one because the pseudonym was suggested by her editor. It was craven and deceptive, but she was so desperate for publication and attention from anyone in the industry at that point. Not making an excuse for her but it‘s not solely her fuckup. 3w

Did June plagiarize Athena‘s work by publishing “The Last Front?” What about the second story? Should there be legal repercussions??

#LitsyLove
#LitsyLoveReads

Roary47 This is that warning we hear about intellectual rights of the author. Where is says something about sections or portions of this are the authors property. I think she stole both of them because of this, even with her changes it was still the story originally created. 3w
Cupcake12 At the end of the day without Athena‘s work there would be no book. The story had already been created. 3w
Maggie4483 Yes to all. Again, she could have credited Athena (claiming co-authorship of the book and saying the short story was inspired by Athena) and avoided most of the mess she got into. 3w
REPollock I don‘t feel like I can judge whether either one is plagiarism without reading the (nonexistent) texts, but it‘s all ethically questionable at best and intellectual theft at worst. 3w

How do you feel about June? At any point did you agree with her choices or feel sympathy for her?

What are your thoughts of Athena? Did your opinion of her change over the course of the book?

#LitsyLove
#LitsyLoveReads

Zuhkeeyah I could almost see some of June‘s justifications, but she was just so unlikeable that I couldn‘t ever see her in another light. 3w
Roary47 At first I agreeing with her, but then it was justifying everything she did. In the end it consumed her and she was ready to hurt another to get the life she wanted. I started hating her somewhere in the middle and was so appalled by her decisions I couldn‘t turn away. 3w
Cupcake12 At times I felt sorry for June as she wanted the fame and fortune so bad, she was just desperate. Athena seemed to revel in her fame, I really didn‘t like her but I didn‘t have a reason as to why! 3w
See All 7 Comments
Maggie4483 While it was hard not to feel sorry for her when she was at her lowest points, she was really unlikable and just so incredibly stupid. She told so many lies that I think she started to believe them, & then she got really arrogant. Even if she had achieved all her success on her own, her attitude was just so cringey (do the kids still say “cringey”?). Like Kanye calling himself a genius. I have a hard time respecting people who lack humility. 3w
REPollock June reminded me of insufferable classmates in grad school (creative writing MFA). I hated her on many levels but she‘s a definite type. Dozens of Junes at my school and probably many others. 3w
Teresereading June‘s decisions were poor and her judgement was lacking. However Athena was flawed and the more we found out about her, the less likeable? What nationality was she? There were multiple backstories 3w
REPollock Because everything the reader knows about Athena is filtered through June‘s POV, I didn‘t form an opinion of her. I wondered how she would tell her side of some of these scenes. 3w

Were June and Athena ever really friends? Did either have any real friends??

#LitsyLove
#LitsyLoveReads

Zuhkeeyah I think their semi-friendship was the most either could manage. Athena could not read a room and June was too embittered about her lack of success to be fun. 3w
Roary47 I think they may have tried too hard to be friends. They were very different and forcing a friendship. 3w
Cupcake12 I don‘t think they were ‘real friends‘ even though at times the opportunity arose. I feel it was a forced relationship and very awkward. 3w
See All 8 Comments
LapReader No depth there at all or to their lives in general. Hard to be friends with competitive perfectionists. 3w
JessieKB At face value, it seemed to be a mutually opportunistic friendship. It served as a great reminder though that you should always consider your source. 3w
Maggie4483 They were frenemies at best. It was definitely about what they got from the other (June got admission into Athena‘s literary inner circle, and Athena had someone to feel superior to). There was never any genuine affection. 3w
Teresereading Towards the end June seemed to be remembering some good things about their friendship but the first betrayal altered their relationship (edited) 3w
REPollock I think they were both too self-obsessed yet insecure to have any actual friends. Also they both were invested in intellectual pretensions such that it would be difficult for either of them to be open or vulnerable to anyone else. 3w

What was going through June‘s head when she stole Athena‘s work??

Were you screaming at her?! 😱 📣

#LitsyLoveReads
#LitsyLove

Gissy I read this book last year August 2023. Unlikable characters. June was always justifying her behavior🙄For me this was okay. I think this part of June‘s constant behavior what she would do not, was repetitive 🤦🏽‍♀️3/3.5 ⭐️For me. 3w
Zuhkeeyah Not really surprised considering her intense jealousy of Athena‘s success. (@gissy I also did not like any of the characters. I‘m with you on the low rating.) 3w
Roary47 She was a character that I loved to hate because of this. At first yes, I saw that she was trying to make a way for herself, but still that was someone else‘s work! 3w
See All 11 Comments
Cupcake12 I can see how deep jealousy took a hold of June. She tried to excuse her behaviour at every opportunity. But theft is theft. 3w
Maggie4483 I don't think any though whatsoever was involved in the decision to take the actual manuscript. She was acting on pure impulse.
Her decisions after that were just a downward spiral of stupidity.
I kept thinking of two other books while reading this. The first was the Confessions of a Shopaholic series. Because like Rebecca Bloom, I think 99% of June's problems could have been solved if she would just STOP. LYING.
The other was-(continued)
3w
Maggie4483 When Michelle McNamara died suddenly in the middle of writing I'll Be Gone In The Dark, and Billy Jensen, Paul Haynes, and McNamara's husband Patton Oswalt all stepped in to help finish it. I think Jensen & Haynes had already been working with Michelle before her death, and they are not listed as authors of the book. But both received some acclaim after the fact, and Jensen went on to have a brief but very successful stint in (continued) 3w
Maggie4483 ...True Crime media (until he had his own scandal and got canceled).
I think June could have told a smaller lie and gotten away with it. She could have easily convinced people that she and Athena were working on the book together, and I think she would have avoided a lot of the fallout (both the race stuff and the plagiarism). Yes, she would have had to share a lot of credit with Athena, but I think it would have been a lot better for her.
3w
LapReader She had to make a quick decision if she was going to steal it as it‘s not like she could have come back and got it later. She definitely didn‘t think it through and continued to make further bad decisions. 3w
JessieKB All of this!!! @Maggie4483 yes🤣🤣 Shopaholic. She acted on impulse but in my opinion knew exactly what she was doing once it was done. She is definitely one of those “can‘t make a good decision (or tell the truth) to save your life” type people. 3w
Teresereading It was so random, and then she kept digging herself in deeper. It was weird when started thinking it was her work. 3w
REPollock Stealing it in the moment when she was super drunk and has just watched helplessly as Athena died, okay, she wasn‘t thinking clearly. When she decided to revise the draft and pass it off as her own instead of giving it to Athena‘s family, she chose the shitty path. 3w

Zuhkeeyah Haha same! I was extra careful chewing mine last week. 3w
Roary47 I haven‘t eaten pancakes since this book. 😅 It did seem like she just stood there. It was probably the shock of it all, or maybe disbelief, but man. 3w
Cupcake12 I think in her heart she wanted to save her but her head took over and saw an opportunity to be taken. 3w
See All 8 Comments
Maggie4483 It's hard to fault June for not doing more. Some people just freeze in those kind of situations. I'm first aid and CPR certified because of my jobs, but I pray I never have to use it...I know I would be terrified of doing it wrong and making things worse. 3w
LapReader Also trained in cpr and never want to have to use it. My poor brother in law did it twice last year and both people died despite his best efforts. The first a neighbour after a hit and run by a drunk driver, the second a mate who fell down a flight of stairs after a buck‘s party. Poor bugger. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Of course being a nurse I‘m trained in cpr and I‘ve had to perform it countless times. So it‘s easy for me to think that she could have done more, but I know she was in shock. I‘ll think of this book every time I eat pancakes 🥞 3w
REPollock Also they had been drinking all night. I‘ve been certified in CPR/1st aid for my job too but if I‘d been drinking all night, I know I wouldn‘t even feel confident about a Heimlich maneuver, much less further 1st aid. 3w
Teresereading When I did a first aid course recently, pretty sure they told us Heimlich wasn‘t recommended for amateurs. Slap them on the back and call 000! I was frustrated that she took so long to call for help 3w

When your book matches your mimosa. Can‘t say I‘m loving this, too millennial. With no ballet for a while yet and being made to rest I have been having some restful weekends. Yesterday it was tea in bed before a cooked breakfast, a book in the bath then a lay in the hammock, an arvo nap followed by dinner and a show with my cousin. Today it was a pot of tea and the papers in bed. Some white wine and Gardening Australia later then early to bed.

CatLass007 I found this book to be mediocre also. It was a Goodreads favorite last year and I don‘t understand all the hype. Maybe it‘s that Goodreads isn‘t all it‘s cracked up to be either. 1mo

Like many others, I loved this book that gives an inside look at the ruthless world of publishing. Unpopular opinion: I loved the main character. 4✨ I‘m not sure how to feel about this book because of the racial back and forth that happens in it. It‘s unfortunate that it‘s a thing. That we judge other people‘s work and ideas because of the color of their skin. Stealing is wrong no matter how it gets twisted. This book gave a different dimension on theft, and the main character who we should hate or love has layers and it‘s hard to hate her or love her because she is getting injustice too.⬇️

Roary47 I like that this made me think. #LitsyLoveReads @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 2mo

Such an interesting topic, super thought-provoking and was a perfect pick for book club. It‘s hard to hate your narrator/main character but it‘s so well written you manage to hate June but still enjoy the book!

A book about flaws of twitter discourse and publishing industry. It's different and bizarre. For something being called as one of the best books of 2023 - I had really high expectations, but maybe too high :)

There were some slow parts, especially in the beginning, but otherwise I liked this.

Thank you for the gift of this book @CarolynM It was such a wild ride and kept me horrified in the best kind of way.. This book is a vehicle for Kuang to explore a variety of terrible behaviors. Beyond the protagonist‘s actions to the way in which an industry can pay lip service to and build PR around diversity while the real power and money still funnels through the existing channels. (The meeting with the Hollywood guys 🤯) ⬇️

Centique Spoiler comment below! 2mo
Centique The one honest moment in the book was when June met the labour camp survivor. There is the story that never got told and the voice that didnt get heard - and even June felt the power of the truth. Its great to have a book that captures so much of the current reality of online bullying and the rewriting of events to appease twitter etc. The new manuscript that June starts writing which will change the accepted narrative - could even be this one? 2mo
Reggie Ohhh June, crazy, you want to feel bad for her but can‘t, crazy, crazy, June. Great review! And every time I eat pancakes, I think of this book. 2mo
Ruthiella @Reggie Make sure you chew thoroughly before swallowing! 🫣😂 2mo
Centique @Reggie thank you Reggie! Yes, she kept trying to get my sympathy and failing because she was TERRIBLE 😱😂😂 2mo

I‘m a little blown away by how much I liked this! I mean, I hate the main character and find nothing redeeming about her AND we spend A LOT of time in her head. It‘s dark and funny and full of microaggressions, self-delusion and green-eyed jealousy. I devoured it.

Reggie I kept thinking, awww maybe I can feel bad for her and then she would say something and I‘d be like oh yeah, that‘s why we don‘t like her. 2mo
marleed I‘m always impressed when I like a book but don‘t like the MC. 2mo
LazyLimaLife @Reggie me too! Every time I thought, okay! Here‘s the redemption moment! And then it was, ugh! I hate her more! 2mo

I listened to this on audio. The narrator was fantastic. The book - not for me. #unpopularopinion It was fast paced, but the voice is so incredibly unlikable. I understand that this is the point, but it just wasn‘t for me. It is also a scathing look at the publishing industry. It hits you so hard over the head making its point, it wasn‘t enjoyable or funny. It was a truly interesting idea for a story, that just didn‘t work for me. ⭐️.5 /5 ❤️📚

Elizabeth2 @dabbe omgosh, thank you! I was so nervous to post because I know how popular this book is. 😂 You‘ve made me feel better. 💕 2mo
dabbe @Elizabeth2 We need ALL voices for the books we read. All books are not for everybody. Plus, life's too short, and there are way too many books out there to read! Thank you for posting! 💚💙💚 2mo
BookNerd9906 I agree. I also did not care for this book. I find it difficult to like any book where I hate the main character. 2mo

June Hayward witnesses the death of her college "friend" Athenea Liu, a very successful American-Asian author. She decides to steal her manuscript on Chinese Labourers during WWI and finally gets the success she always dreamed of, but also the hate of many people that think is cultural appropriation and those who think doubt she is the author.
The book is told from the perspective of a white woman who "is not racist but" and Kuang strikes gold⬇️

nanuska_153 with all the racist comments/attitudes from her characters that no doubt she had to suffer in real life. Some dark humour mixed with interesting insight into the publishing business, white privilege satire and a commentary in how vicious social media can get and how affects our lives. It's an interesting read, it deflated a bit in my opinion, but I'd still recommend it. 2mo
Jas16 Really want to read this one soon. 2mo
nanuska_153 @Jas16 I had heard such good things from it that it joined my wishlist very early on. I'm glad I read it 2mo
