Mistborn: The Final Empire
Mistborn: The Final Empire | Samar Dana
12 posts | 18 read | 5 to read
From Publishers Weekly Sanderson's eerie second fantasy (after 2005's Elantris), set in a mist-haunted, ash-ridden world, pits Kelsier, "the Survivor of Hathsin," against the immortal Lord Ruler's 1,000-year domination of both the Great Houses and their serflike "skaa." Through Allomancy acquired in the Ruler's most hellish prison, Kelsier can "burn" 10 metals internally, fueling superhuman powers he uses to assemble rebels in a loose plan to destroy the nobility, the empire and the Lord Ruler himself. Kelsier uses Vin, a street urchin with the same Mistborn powers Kelsier possesses, to infiltrate the Great Houses' society, where she falls in love with philosopher prince Elend Venture. This mystico-metallurgical fantasy combines Vin's coming-of-age-in-magic and its well-worn theme of revolt against oppression with copious mutilations, a large-scale cast of thieves, cutthroats, conniving nobles and exotic mutants. The fast-paced action scenes temper Vin's interminable ballroom intrigues, while the characters, though not profoundly drawn, have a raw stereotypic appeal. (July) Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From The Sliver of Infinity, the Lord Ruler, is the locus of religious and temporal order in a world in which the skaa are slaves or worse. Half-skaa erstwhile thief Kelsior is the only person to survive and escape the Lord Ruler's most brutal prison, in which, however, he discovered he has the powers of the Mistborn, which are based on the internal "burning" of certain metals, all of which the Mistborn can use, while most others can burn only one. Now Kelsior plans his most daring raid ever, into the center of the palace to discover the secret of the Lord Ruler's power. Beforehand, his band finds the half-skaa orphan Vin in another thieving crew, where she's useful because she brings good luck. She is also Mistborn and, if she can master and learn to trust her powers, will enable Kelsior's crew to infiltrate the nobility and possibly overthrow the status quo. Intrigue, politics, and conspiracies mesh complexly in a world Sanderson realizes in satisfying depth and peoples with impressive characters. Regina Schroeder Copyright American Library Association. This is the first book I read from Brandon Sanderson and just wow. The World building is flawless and the characters full of flaws, like real people. It‘s hard to not care about the characters. This book was such a ride. I would recommend this book for anyone who would like to go on an adventure in a fantastical world.

Day 4: #20days20series @Andrew65
I also include the Wax & Wayne series here, because it's the same planet it plays on just a different time (I think Sanderson calls it the second epoch)

Andrew65 These look very interesting. 4y

I‘m actually kind of mad about how good this was, because it was 630-odd pages, and the other books are longer, and I don‘t have time for this!! 🤣😜 #howjessreadsin2019

tina_b.ooks This has been on my TBR-List forever, maybe I should finally get to it 6y
RainyDayReading I loved this book so much! 6y
rretzler It has also been on my TBR list forever, but I‘m now reading several series at 600+ pages, so I think I‘m still going to put it off for awhile. One can only take so many chunksters!😝 6y
BooknerdsLife Oh this one been on my TBR for years too!!! 😂😅 But I just started a 880 pages book #oops so this one will have to wait...again 😆 6y

I‘ve heard nothing but amazing things about Brandon Sanderson‘s books such as the Mistborn world and my most favorite booktuber PeruseProject kept on raving about the mistborn trilogy and I‘m like I‘m really going to give this a try and I did,and well I really loved the first half kinda and when they wanted to overthrow the lord ruler.I really loved Kelsier but this book wasn‘t for me I won‘t be continuing on because we all have opinions. 💕

Here are the last sets of questions for The Final Empire! As always take your time answering them, and make sure to mark any spoilers!

cobwebmoth I do think that the Lord Ruler was keeping something in check. I'm very curious about the history of their world. I'm hoping that my questions will be answered as I continue the series. 6y

LittleBug 7. I think both! It was his hubris that made him do what he did and believe it was because he was a god. The way society shaped itself around him and his believes, turned him into a type of protector. A deadly, evil protector, but still… What I think he didn‘t realise until the end, was that Kel had tried to provide the people with something new to believe in… But then there‘s the Deepness... (edited) 6y
LittleBug 8. Some people need to believe in something, especially those who have been raised without any alternative ways of thinking. In that way I understand why Kell did what he did. But then, the Lord Ruler was also convinced that what he did was for the good of the people… The big difference between the Lord Ruler and Kell, was that Kell sacrificed himself for the his cause, instead of placing himself in an active role at the middle of those believes.. 6y
LittleBug 9. I didn‘t get much further than that it must have been some kind of cataclysmic, or even apocalyptic event. I had the impression that maybe it was caused by previously powerful people, but then I started wondering if that might be a story the Lord Ruler created, because his Ascension had somehow caused the changes… 6y
InLibrisVeritas @LittleBug I agree about the religion, and certainly didnt expect Kell to lay the groundwork he did. I think initially it kind of freaked me out a bit because it felt like manipulation, but people often need to feel as if they are part of something greater in order to take the first steps to bettering their own lives. 6y
LittleBug @InLibrisVeritas I felt the same. It‘s the kind of thing I can‘t approve of, but can understand... 6y

Optimistically I was aiming for 50 this year. But I‘m already behind 🤦🏻‍♂️🤨 I‘ll persevere though. What‘s your target and have you got any good tips for reaching it?

RadicalReader @DannyHattan I enjoyed discovering audiobooks make the book seem to fly by and be more entertaining because of it being read to you. I also love discovering other books my favorite authors have written to make accomplishing a reading goal much easier and more fun 6y
Reviewsbylola I only recently started listening to audiobooks so probably 20-25 for me. 6y
StephanieP1 Probably 30 or so. I‘m already at 13 I think. But I have lots of physical books I‘d like to read this year too. I‘ve got three sons 4 and under so I listen to lots of audiobooks while doing laundry, dishes, cooking and etc. 6y
Kaye I honestly have an audiobook playing almost continually. When I drive , cook, do laundry, shop , falll asleep ( and while I‘m sleeping ) , cleaning , dishes , walking , at the gym. They‘re just so handy. 6y
