Welcome to the #LosersClub open discussion for #TheRunningMan!

Please be mindful of spoilers. We have new readers to King who haven‘t read all of his books. When referencing his other work, please keep this in mind for our new-to-King friends. Don‘t forget to tag each other in the comments so your friends can see your reply. Have fun!

BookwormAHN I listened to the audio version and in the intro King was clearly not happy about the movie version. I was wondering if anyone has seen it and what were their thoughts on it. I really enjoyed the book. 5y
DGRachel @BookwormAHN I didn‘t even realize there was a movie based on the book. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m also curious if King has liked any of the adaptations. I know he hated a lot of the earlier films, especially The Shining. 5y
Karkar @BookwormAHN I did not realize it was a movie either. 😮 5y
Readingismyescape @BookwormAHN I watched the movie after I read the book. It‘s completely different. In the movie Richards was a soldier who disobeyed orders, escaped prison, then was recaptured and “encouraged “ (read: forced) into being part of the game. Also, the hunters looking for him were cartoonish characters with gimmicks that he easily “got rid of” (read: killed). 5y
Readingismyescape I listened to the audio version and was annoyed that the intro revealed the end of the book. ☹️ 5y
Readingismyescape Also, in the movie there are three other contestants running at the same time. That Schwarzenegger has to save (when he can). 5y
Readingismyescape I enjoyed the book. I can see a similar premise in many of the popular ya dystopian books of the past couple of years. The book‘s ending was quite abrupt which I had forgotten about. It‘s kind of jarring. 5y
BookwormAHN @Readingismyescape I was also annoyed that the ending was revealed and how abrupt it was. 5y
Readingismyescape @BookwormAHN Right? Why reveal the ending in the prologue. At least include a spoiler warning. 🙄 5y

Hey #losersclub! Just a reminder that next month we have TWO books on the schedule: a graphic novel and the first book in The Dark Tower series! I‘ll do a separate discussion post for each, but both will be on the same day (unless I drop the ball again, because I suck 🤷🏻‍♀️ ). So, beg, borrow, or buy your copies and get ready to read these two next month!

JulAnna 😊I mixed up the months. I read this one already and am waiting for my copy of Cujo to come in the mail! Duh! 😂 5y

DGRachel @JulAnna No worries! You‘re all set to comment when we have discussion and you can always go back to the Cujo discussion at any time! 5y
SconsinBookyBadger A couple weeks late, but I finally made it to the library to check it out! 😄 5y
SexyCajun Wait March 18th for discussion? 5y
SexyCajun Oh it says it started in February. Whoops 5y
DGRachel @SexyCajun Yes - each book has a month to be read before I post the discussion thread. I know it can be a bit confusing, but I don‘t know how else to phrase the posts and I‘m using the template developed by the original host. We‘ll discuss this one next week and reading starts for a graphic novel & The Gunslinger 3/19. I give a reminder for the following month‘s read in case people need time to obtain a copy. 5y
SexyCajun @DGRachel The Bachman Books. I'm confused on why some explanations say it's someone else's work. 5y
DGRachel @SexyCajun Whose explanations say they‘re someone else‘s work? My understanding is that Richard Bachman was a pen name used by Stephen King. They‘ve even republished a lot of those books with King‘s name on the cover to sell more copies. Now, I‘m going to have to go Google...😂 5y
SexyCajun @DGRachel ok I must've misunderstood or just flat out didn't know!!! Actually I did NOT know that he ever used a pen name!! Son that explains it😳😳😳 5y

BookwormAHN I didn't really like this one. The whole thing seemed like an ad for the rabies vaccine. 5y
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures I thought it was a good book. I‘m a vet tech and liked the perspective on how rabies can affect everyone surrounding Cujo‘s family and how easily it can be spread. It is basically an ad for rabies, as @BookwormAHN said, but being in the veterinary community I thought that was a good thing, showing why you should vaccinate 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Karkar Can someone please explain how the thing in the closet is important, I really feel like that could have been left out 5y
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures @Karkar I think the monster in the closet is supposed to be the ghost of Frank Dodd, who was the serial killer mentioned at the beginning. The idea, to me, was a parallel between people not realising Dodd was a killer and Cujo starting as such a good dog. Maybe even a play on reincarnation of sorts to explain the horror of what happened, since he added in “The monster never dies. It came to Castle Rock again....” 5y
Bklover I like this one, but is definitely not one of my favorites. 5y
SconsinBookyBadger I‘ve read Cujo once back in HS. Oof much harder to get through this time around. The ending had me hugging my doggo nieces and nephews a bit more. 5y
Readingismyescape @Karkar I feel like the monster in the closet is the spirit of evil. Cujo takes place in Castle Rock, like some other King stories. So many awful and unexplained things happen there. It‘s a cursed place. When I think about all the coincidences that occurred in order for Donna and Tad to end up alone in that car at Cujo‘s house, it seems like something manipulated events to make it happen. 5y

My final King post for the day, I promise. Here‘s an easier to read schedule just for #LosersClub2019. Please refer to this when I slack and forget to post. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I will mostly be #ghosthosting not reading along, but I‘ll probably join in for at least a couple of these. Note that March includes a novel and a graphic novel.

LauraJ Thank you for #ghosthosting! 5y
BookwormAHN Thanks 🖤 5y
BookBabe Sweet! Love me some King. I‘m on a bit of a King kick lately. I‘ve only read 2 on that entire list though! Very tempted to join in on this in February and onward. 5y
Karkar Yes! This year is going to be great!!! 5y
DGRachel @Readingismyescape Here‘s the schedule for the rest of this year. 5y
DGRachel @BookBabe Would you like me to add you to the list for discussion posts? You don‘t have to join in every month, just read the ones you‘re interested in. I think there‘s only two or three that I will read and one of those is a reread (Eyes of the Dragon is my favorite King). 5y
BookBabe @DGRachel yes please! Sorry if it‘s a lot to ask, but please wait until the second book. The January selection is an epic trigger for me. Thank you! 5y
DGRachel @BookBabe I totally understand. I‘ll make a special note on my saved list to add you in later. I‘m not reading January‘s book, either. 😘 5y
SconsinBookyBadger Thank you for your hard work and ghost hosting this epic King read along! 5y
BookBabe 😘🤗❤️ 5y
Bklover Thanks!❤️❤️😊 5y
Readingismyescape @DGRachel Thanks again. I just started listening to Pet Sematary, which I borrowed from the library. So I will probably just go ahead and finish it. I do want to reread Cujo but I probably won‘t finish in time. I‘ll participate when I can. 5y
DGRachel @teainthelibrary Here‘s the schedule for this year. 🤩 Again - it‘s super casual. Read the ones you want to, join the discussion if you feel like it, and just have fun. 😘 5y
