I saw this question today on the Likewise app. The first book I read by Stephen King that made me a fan was Carrie but I haven‘t seen the movie.

It‘s Stephen King‘s birthday. There‘s also a sweepstakes going on and I entered for it. May the odds be in my favor! I‘ve read 6 books by Stephen King: IT, Misery, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, Carrie, Christine and I like what I‘ve read from him so far. I‘m looking forward to reading more. He has written a lot of books and he‘s still writing so I have a lot of books to read by him. I hope to read his entire backlist one day. That would be fun.

Cortg Yes! I grew up in New England for the most part. His writing feels like home. I‘m on vacay in RI and listening to a SK book. I‘ve chuckled quite a few times with this read and his NE jabs 😂 2y
BookDragonNotWorm 😂 I'm from Florida but my husband and I spent 8 years of our 30s living in New England - 5 of them quite near where SK lived (saw him at the grocery store a few times) and we said the same thing - there are definitely some creepy little towns and characters up there! 2y
Amiable @Cortg Where did you grow up? I know what you mean about his writing —there‘s a certain snark and attitude that makes me snicker at times because I can hear the voices of people I know in my head when I‘m reading it. 😀 2y
See All 11 Comments
Amiable @BookDragonNotWorm So funny —my husband and I are literally in Florida right now for a friend‘s wedding. On the drive from Orlando to Vero Beach through the central part of the state we said the same thing about creepy towns and eccentric characters! 😄 2y
Cortg I moved to Massachusetts when I was 7 and lived there for 5 years, then Connecticut where I graduated high school. I went away to college and never returned. My parents sold the CT house a couple of years ago after 30+ years. 2y
BookDragonNotWorm That's so funny - & true! 😂 I live beachside in south Brevard County - just north of Vero Beach. I know some of those places you drove by. The scariest of them didn't even exist 20 years ago. They were founded on poverty & meth (& maybe inbreeding 😳). Keep your windows up and the doors locked. Seriously - in the last few years there's been an influx of petty crimes. The more people who move down here, the worse it gets. We're getting the dregs. 2y
Amiable @Cortg I‘m a Connecticut native who moved to Massachusetts for college and lived there for 12 years, then moved back to CT for my husband‘s job. I went to North Haven High School and now live in East Lyme. Where did your parents live? (edited) 2y
Amiable @BookDragonNotWorm Honestly, I‘m not a huge fan of Florida — I prefer our creepy brand of SK characters in NE! That‘s interesting about the towns we passed —I didn‘t realize it was all so new. It did surprise me to hear that Vero Beach was founded less than 100 years ago, too. I‘m so used to New England where everything is so old. I have furniture from my grandmother that‘s older than Vero Beach! 😀 2y
Cortg We lived in Sandy Hook and I graduated from Newtown High School. My daughter is in college now in Massachusetts so I‘m up this way several times a year! I went to school in NC, eventually moved to NoVA, and we‘re in MD now, slowly making our way back up the east coast. 2y
Amiable @Cortg Ha ha! My youngest son went to UMD and lives in Baltimore now, so we‘re down there a few times a year! I‘ll probably pass you on I-95. 😀 2y
Cortg Excellent! I‘m just south of B‘More by Fort Meade/NSA! 2y

HAPPY 75th BIRTHDAY to my most favorite author…..Stephen King.

One of my most vivid memories of reading his books involved the coffee shop (I think a deli now) in this building in my NJ town. In the back of this shop was a book section where newly released books were rented for .25 cents a day. When a new King book was released I sent my Mom (my greatest supporter of my reading habit) there to rent me the new King book.

AmyG They were always big books and I needed to read them immediately. I couldn‘t wait for my library hold to come through because that could take months. I would usually read his books in about 3 days…weekend lieterally booked. I don‘t think I have ever enjoyed reading as much as I did. The Shining and The Stand will always be my favorites as they were read back in those days. (edited) 2y

https://www.mentalfloss.com/posts/stephen-king-author-facts. I had no idea one of his dreams was to write a Jason Voorhees novel, which makes me love him even more. His 75th birthday is tomorrow on the 21st and even though I know a lot of us have posted a lot about him maybe we can post a memory we have of reading him or a story of his that we love tomorrow. Thanks, Littens.

Addison_Reads Great idea. In my opinion, one can never post too much about Stephen King. 2y

Reggie @AmyG on the Talking Scared podcast he always asks the guest horror author who their biggest influence was or their gateway to horror and it‘s almost always King. Or Clive Barker. 2y
AmyG He wasn‘t my gateway to horror. When I was a kid there was a show on TV, Saturday nights, Creature Feature, that would show “monster” movies (what we called them). I never missed a show. King just introduced me to horror books. 2y
vivastory This was an interesting list! My 2 favorite facts that I was unaware of was him nearly collaborating with Spielberg on an adaptation 🤯 & the lost manuscript of the cannibals 2y

Broke out my Kindle for a recent flight, and I've been using it a bit since returning. This Stephen King short is available through humblebundle.com for a $5 minimum donation that goes to the ACLU. A seemingly crazy person claims to the police that there are body stealing aliens invading earth. Feels like a familiar story, but it was very short and entertaining.

These Omnibus editions are a thing of the past now but they‘re still going for a song second-hand. Worth picking up? Depends if you‘re happy settling down in your favourite chair with a ton weight in your lap, I guess. Bible-thin pages too. Carrie is the stuff of legend but I bailed on The Tommyknockers: King‘s worst ever, I reckon, despite a great premise. My other SK bails: Needful Things, Insomnia, Revival. So far. How about you?

Soubhiville I don‘t think I‘ve ever bailed on anything by him, but I haven‘t enjoyed him in a long time. I couldn‘t get enough of his books in the 90‘s, though. It‘s possible I might have bailed on some short story collections, but in general SS aren‘t my thing. 3y
llcoolnate Love some, hate some for sure. Bailed on Insomnia (ugh). I hated From a Buick 8 (has to be his worst), Under the Dome, and others I'm forgetting. Def a hit or miss guy 🤷🏻‍♂️ 3y
llcoolnate Oh god and Bag of Bones 🤮 3y
See All 12 Comments
Mistermandolin @Soubhiville I can understand that. Although I still enjoy him I don‘t get the thrill that I used to. He hasn‘t changed much - and maybe that‘s the problem. Many authors like to plough well-worked and familiar furrows but sometimes even the most constant of readers yearn for fresh fields. 3y
Prairiegirl_reading I also bailed on needful things. I took a long break from him after that one too. 3y
Reagan I have never tackled Insomnia but loved The Tommyknockers and Needful Things. Those omnibus editions 😳 I have a few Dean Koontz and John Saul -so heavy. 3y
LitStephanie I liked Insomnia a lot. Other than Carrie, which I remember liking, haven't read the others. 3y
Mistermandolin @Prairiegirl_reading Taking a break is a great idea. From all writers, I reckon. Even the best ones. 3y
Mistermandolin @Reagan I remember really wanting to like The Tommyknockers and enjoying it up to a point. I‘m going to give it another go this summer or whenever we get some decent outdoor reading weather. I‘m in the UK and this time round we‘re having the worst spring I can remember: rain, rain, rain. 3y
Mistermandolin @LitStephanie The early stuff‘s the best. Hits and misses thereafter. Some notable hits, though. Later, his latest, certainly has its moments. 3y
swynn Insomnia and It (unpopular opinion, for sure). I've wanted to bail at some point on most of the longer ones I tried. Haven't tried Neeedful Things or Tommyknockers yet. 3y
Mistermandolin @swynn I totally agree - his long ones can be a schlep. 3y

Just curious, what is everyone‘s favorite #stephenking book? I‘ve read more Stephen king than any other author. He is my moms favorite writer so I remember seeing her curled up on the couch, lost in a king book day after day and it made me want to read. Now I do the same thing with his books. My favorite is The Stand due to its in depth story with twists of emotion sprinkled all through it. #spookystories #horror #horrorbooks #thestand #scarybook

TrishB The Stand is my fave too. Honourable mentions for Needful Things, ‘Salem‘s Lot, Dr Sleep, the Bill Hodges trilogy. I‘m a massive fan 😁 3y
JakeRuble @TrishB Salem‘s Lot may be my runner up! I LOVED that book. I also really enjoyed the Bill Hodges trilogy, much to my surprise as it was different than any other books of his I had read up until that time. I‘ve still not read The Shining or Dr Sleep! 3y

Trying to get ready for #Scarathlon2020 and #October‘s #AuthoraMonth. Am on #TeamSlaughter with a focus on Mystery, Suspense and Detective books.

I‘m after some Stephen King recommendations, I don‘t particularly like heavy horror. So far read and loved The Dark Tower Series, 11.22.63 and Joyland.

Given all this what books of his would you recommend me to read?

Thanks in advance. 😍

DGRachel I really enjoyed Duma Key on audio. There‘s a whole atmosphere of menace that pervades the book, but I don‘t remember anything particularly graphic. 4y

Andrew65 @BooksCoffeeNurse Thanks I was wondering about the Institute and the Bill Hodges Trilogy (I do own the first one). Need to look at The Outsider because not aware of that one. Thanks 😍 4y

Andrew65 @BooksCoffeeNurse Thanks, will let you know how I go. 4y
BookwormAHN The Dead Zone 4y
Andrew65 @BookwormAHN Thanks, will check it out. 😍 4y
Bookwormjillk The Mr Mercedes series was really good. Also the Eye of the Dragon is a good fantasy, and The Dark Tower series is amazing. 4y
Bookish_AF The Green Mile. I also really liked Revival but that one gets....dark. Existential horror I think is how one would describe it! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I second the recommendations for Eye of the Dragon and The Green Mile. Also some of his novellas aren‘t horror themed, like The Body, it‘s the short that the movie Stand By Me is based off of. 4y
AmyG Not too supernatural...11/22/63, Hearts in Atlantis , The Institute, Misery (edited) 4y
Traci1 I think the Bill Hodges books or the Institute are both terrific choices. The Outsider has some major spoilers for the Bill Hodges series, so I'd wait on that one if you plan to read both. 4y
Andrew65 @Traci1 Thanks for that information. Bill Hodges and The Institute May be my first choice. 4y
Andrew65 @AmyG Need to check into Hearts in Atlantis and Misery. 4y
Andrew65 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I loved that film and do want to check out some of those novellas. The Green Mike is also popular. The Eye of the Dragon is one I don‘t know. (edited) 4y
Andrew65 @Bookish_AF Thanks for these recommendations, will check them out. 😊 4y
Andrew65 I loved The Dark Tower, quite unique. Will be researching The Eye of the Dragon. 4y
inthegreensandblues It has been years since I read them but I loved The Green Mile and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and don't remember them being too heavy on the horror, more suspense. 4y
DGRachel Eyes of the Dragon is my favorite King. The only reason I didn‘t mention it is because it is fantasy, not horror/mystery/suspense, so I‘m not sure it would count for your October team goals. 4y
Kimberlone 11/22/63 would be a good one! 4y
Lizpixie Fire starter and Cujo while scary aren‘t as heavy on the horror as a lot of his books. I also loved The Green Mile & The Dead Zone is also great. It‘s difficult to choose non-horror King! 4y
Bluebird I‘m not a horror reader either, but I really enjoyed The Stand. However, given the current state of the world, I‘m not sure if it would be a good choice. 🙄 4y
Clwojick Oh! Interested to see what you choose. I‘ve never been really into King either, as I‘m not big on horror or supernatural/sci-fi elements, which I know a lot of his books have. The only one I‘ve read was The Green Mile, which I did really enjoy. 4y
BookwormM Salem‘s Lot you have to visit the good Father in his original incarnation 4y

Welcome to the second edition of Which One Wednesday!!

1. Stephen King! Although in high school, it was Nicholas Sparks.

2. Definitely a morning person.

3. Salty!

Now play along! What are your answers?

BookishMe Still scared, uncomfortable with King's stories and have outgrown Sparks. I can't choose for the next two ;o I love the promises of mornings, and quiet of nights, salted caramel is a favourite flavour ;p 4y

1. Has absolutely got to be Stephen King. My frustrated mother gave up and let me read him when I was a little kid and that was the end, I loved him!
2. Including my wife's we have 4, and they arent big enough
3. Random but I do keep everything by the same author together
