For readers of Atonement, a powerful and haunting story of three sisters and their friend who grow up on the outskirts of their parents' glamorous bohemian lifestyle. On her first day at a new school, Lily befriends one of the daughters of infamous avant-garde painter Evan Trentham. Lily has never experienced anything like the Trenthams' home, where Evan and his wife have created a wild, makeshift family of like-minded artists, all living and working together to escape the stifling conservatism of 1930's Australia. An only child accustomed to loneliness, Lily soon becomes infatuated with the creative chaos of the Trenthams and aches to fully belong. Despite the Trenthams' glamorous allure, the artists' real lives are shaped by dire Faustian bargains and spectacular falls from grace. As the girls find themselves drawn closer to the white-hot flame of creativity, emotions and art collide with explosive consequences--and Evan's own daughters may be forced to pay a dangerous price for his choices.

A question about the tagged book featured in an awesome Book Nerd Quiz I attended with my book club pals last night. It was so fun & we came third 🥉.
A bunch of young, gorgeous librarians on the adjacent table won. There is hope for the future book nerds! 🙏😆🤓.

Avant-garde artist Evan Trentham, his wife Helena and their daughters live a bohemian life in 1930s Melbourne. They start an art colony, inviting upcoming artists to live and work with them. Narrator Lily is the bff of daughter Eva and lives there too for a while. Through her eyes the story unravels as the community and the family fall apart around her. Decades later she reconnects with this past life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I selected this at random from my shelves and very much enjoyed it. The description says it‘s for fans of Atonement and I tend to agree. It‘s about growing up and being put into adult situations at a young age. I think the writing is very good and I loved the complexity of the relationships that also felt very real. I‘ll be watching out for anything else from this author!

I have been doing a ruthless cull of my library over the last few days and getting rid of books that I bought YEARS ago (and now have little interest in reading ... isn‘t it strange how that works?).

This one has only been waiting for 6 or 7 years 😆 and survived the cut. I‘m about 30 pages in and enjoying it.

CarolynM I've been thinking I need to do that too, but it's so hard to get rid of any book I've ever thought I might like to read. It's only the ones I don't remember fondly that I happily part with. I'll be interested to see what you think of The Strays. I gave my copy away so that tells you what I thought😆 4y

LeahBergen @CarolynM Oh oh! 😆 Yes, I hear you. I seemed to more easily part with the ones I‘d bought at big charity sales. When I shop at those, I‘m always more apt to just add a book to the box to give it a try. 4y
Tamra Yes, it‘s funny that something I really wanted to read ages ago is now “meh.” 4y

Lily is an only child who meets Eve on her first day at a new school when she‘s 8. Eve has two sisters and her parents are avant- grade artists who want to create a Modern Art society in Melbourne. Eventually their home becomes a commune of artists. Set in the thirties, in Melbourne, you experience the strange dynamics of this group and how each influence the other. #Australia

Curiouser_and_curiouser Melbourne is my home town! I must add it! Great review, thanks!! 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Curiouser_and_curiouser oh that‘s so cool!! I had friends who lived in Melbourne, but they‘ve passed on...Stan and Maria, cannot remember their last name but pretty sure it started with a K...Greek last name. I‘m sure Melbourne is huge, but you never know!! 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘ve always wanted to go to Australia, and I should‘ve gone for my 40th bday, but I didn‘t. Maybe one day!!! 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Hi @JanuarieTimewalker13 Nope, Unfortunately it doesn't ring a bell. Whereabouts in Melbourne did they live? I'm in the western suburbs. Originally Essendon, now in Keilor/Sunshine area. I do drive around Melbourne and beyond for my job though, I'm a face painte/balloon twister, I may have been at their house once for a party, never know!? 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 All I know is they have a son named Teddie, and both Stan and Maria had Beta Thalassemia Major...I‘d have to search an old phone book to know where in Melbourne they lived. I may not even have that, but I may have a photo of them when they came stateside for their honeymoon. @Curiouser_and_curiouser I think you‘re Italian, so you may be familiar with the genetic condition. Litlady @Joanne1 - So glad to hear! I‘ve only just started but I can tell it‘s going to be brilliant! Do you have other Aussie author recommendations? 😊📚🇦🇺 (edited) 6y
Joanne1 @Litlady so many. I‘ll share just a few of my favourites. Geraldine Brooks (start with Year of Wonders), Chloe Hooper (non-fiction author); Sofia Laguna; Markus Zusak (his latest novel, bridge of clay, blew me away); Helen Garner (fiction and non-fiction, some really interesting true crime); Hannah Kent; Charlotte Wood; Rosalie Ham (the dressmaker especially, but her others are good too). I could go on but that will do for now. 6y
Litlady @Joanne1 Thanks so much! I‘ve read March by G. Brooks and Hannah Kent is on my radar for Burial Rites and The Good People. So many wonderful selections here and feeling my TBR exploding but it‘s already at that point anyway ... there are worse problems - Lol! 🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 6y

I LOVE Joni Mitchell madly..... and happened upon this bookriot article a few years ago, suggesting books to go along with this album.

It lead me to my favorite book of 2017 (tagged)

Emily Bitto paints a picture of #LaVieBoheme with her story of Lily, who befriends Eva and Eva‘s sisters. Eva‘s father is an Australian painter, and the whole family lives a very different life from Lily‘s unremarkable working-class life.

This is the second book I have read this year that involved art and again I found myself searching up artworks and artists on google. I loved the story, the characters and especially the writing:
‘It was windy, and men held their hats by the brim as if greeting everyone they passed. Women clasped their flapping coats around them, pulling children behind them like fallen kites.‘

Friendship, art, family, I was drawn into the Trentham‘s world. Evan is a famous artist pushing against conventions in the Australian art world in the 1940s. He and his wife form an artists‘ commune and Lily, as a teen, lives with them due to her friendship with their daughter Eva. She captures the vividness and destructiveness that ensues as this chosen family reveals its faults. Art by Ande Kempnich an Australian artist and my uncle‘s partner.

Today‘s song gives me ANOTHER excuse to recommend my favorite book I read last year!
I love this story of female friendship, art and parental narcissism, set in 1930‘s Australia.
Lily is a loner until she meets the vibrant daughters of well-known artist Evan Trentham. When the Trenthams open their home as an artists commune, their daughters and Lily bear the brunt of their neglectful parenting to devastating effect.

I was a little intimidated going into this book, because I was afraid it was going to be artsy and high brow. Instead, it ended up being utterly brilliant and thought provoking. Lily, now a middle-aged woman, reminisces about her childhood friendship with Eva and her infatuation with Eva‘s bohemian parents.

Lily loved being one of the strays in the Trentham‘s artist commune in Australia during the 1930s. As a child, she looked up to Eva‘s glamorous mother and desperately wished to be included in the family. Unfortunately, their creative utopia eventually soured.

The descriptive writing drew me in.

Reading through my lunch hour. Found an old bookmark my elementary school teacher had given me. 💛
