A great feminist utopian short story set in India. I found this gem on #SerialReader

For reading some of the early “feminist” stories from women of European heritage, I found this short story written in 1905 by a Muslim woman reversing the gender roles very interesting.

* Recommended if you enjoyed Angel Island by Inez Haynes Irwin or Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Bookwomble It's also collected in the tagged book, an anthology of Victorian/Edwardian sci-fi stories by women authors. I'd recommended it and it's companion volumes, The Darker Sex (horror/macabre), and Sisters in Crime (detective).

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookwomble I‘m definitely interesting in finding more from other POV‘s. This one and Woman at Point Zero are two that I‘ve stumbled across so far. Both polar opposites too, but great women fiction.

I really enjoyed this YA book about 16 year old Sophia who goes back in time from 2013 to 1857. She settles into a family that live on a prairie in Kansas and it delves into slavery, religion and the treatment of Native Americans. Great story and characters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #booked2019 #muslimmc

A bit slow in places but overcome by the powerful portrait of the relationship between the parents and children in a religious Muslim family. Questions of how much responsibility parents have for who their children become. The father‘s evolution brought me to tears. I also learned a lot about the practice of Islam. Looking forward to discussing this at family bookclub. #muslimmc #familybookclub

Once I let go of the idea of the Pride and Prejudice remix pitch, I totally enjoyed the story the writer was showing us. Yes, there are element of Austen‘s novel. Still once I stopped trying to figure out who was who and took this journey of two people growing up both within and outside their familial circle, their faith and finding a companion with each other as it was not as it was promoted. I couldn‘t stop reading. #netgalley #booked2019

writerlibrarian @Cinfhen the editor says it's YA but I find that label a bit narrow, I think teenagers might enjoy it, but it's more a 20 something and adult story. It was really interesting to feel and « see » the story through both the leads eyes and heart. It made me realized a few obvious things that are really, really annoying that I might have done before that I will not do ever again. Like asking Where are your from assuming that the person is new in here. 5y

Melissa_J @cinfhen that‘s interesting that the editor calls it YA. The book has been out here for over a year, and it wasn‘t marketed as YA. You can find it in the regular fiction section of any bookstore. 5y

writerlibrarian @Melissa_J I know. It's coming out in the US on the 4th of June. I found it through Netgalley newsletter for librarians I'm in Quebec and I hadn't seen it I'm really hoping it will be translated in French so I can add it to the collection of my library. (edited) 5y

Melissa_J Are a lot of English works translated into French? Since the author is Canadian I‘m a bit surprised it hasn‘t been. Maybe it will get picked up by a French (France) publisher. 5y

writerlibrarian @Melissa_J Amazingly, not a lot of english Canadian books get translated in the year they are published. We mostly get them one, two sometimes 5 years later if a French editors picks them up. Two solitudes is still alive and well I'm afraid and disappointed to say. 5y

Usually, books that languish on my shelves end up with a big 👎👎 from me when I do finally read it. I‘m glad this little gem bucked the trend! Published in 1989, I overlooked the fact that this was not an Own Voices book, because it was clear the author did her research and spent time in the culture she was writing about. I loved Shabanu, and esp her relationship with her family‘s 🐫 🐫🐫.

A Woman Is No Man: A Novel | Etaf Rum

This story of three generations of Palestinian women was really rough to read at times, however I do love books that give me a peek into a culture different from my own. It was moving and heartbreaking and definitely not a light read.

A Place for Us shows us what it means to belong but, more importantly, what can happen when we feel we don‘t. The author‘s examination of how families deal with anger, sadness, shame, and guilt was so realistic, which made it all the more moving. All the feels and all the stars.

JennyM @Cinfhen I found it really slow at the start and nearly didn‘t continue reading. But it is such a rich, human story, it was a beautiful read . I would have used it for the same prompt too, but I‘m saving that one for The Kite Runner. I think you will both love @TrishB. I also think you would really enjoy from a psych perspective @Kalalalatja (if you‘ve not already read) 6y
