Wow, this ended up being quite the saga. While I really enjoyed the journey of Sitara and I found some of the passages truly exquisite, I thought this book could have been whittled down a bit. There was A LOT going on, which did make for a thrilling read. And yes, tears were shed.
The audio narration was very good. Excellent choice for #ReadingAsia21 #Afghanistan #Pop21 #MuslimAuthor #Booked21 #DoctorMC
Book publishes March 2 ~ Pick it up!!!

Cinfhen Thanks @Moray_Reads @Kalalalatja I just saw an article that said having fresh flowers around helps with depression xx I think that‘s true (edited) 3y

BarbaraBB That might be quite fun I realize, all three of us making a bingo card especially for you. It‘d give you 75 more books to read 😉😀 3y
Cinfhen Hahah that‘s hilarious @BarbaraBB 💕💕💕I‘ve literally been on lockdown since I returned from the States....I think we had 3 weeks where stores were open since November 😫 3y

I appreciate Dr Qanta Ahmed‘s honesty in calling out the discrimination, contradictions, inconsistencies and biases that are rampant throughout the Kingdom and the Muslim world. Color of skin is judged harshly in the Kingdom and the women tend to label or stigmatized other women by their skin color and ethnicity. Upon first meeting most women assume Dr. Ahmed is a maid & therefore inferior because she is of Pakistani descent. #LiveAndLearn

Kalalalatja It is baffling how people treat other people just because they look different 🙄 3y

BarbaraBB I guess I need to read this one too 💚 3y
Cinfhen I do have to state that this book published in 2008 so I feel like a lot of the information may no longer by relevant but it‘s still fascinating to learn about these countries that most “outsiders” wouldn‘t have access too @Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I‘m still amazed by the whole society and all of the double standards (edited) 3y
Librarybelle I did see that this is a 2008 publication, but as you mentioned in the comments, for those of us who do not live in the country, it‘s a view into life and society. Also hope that things have gotten better. 3y

Librarybelle This sounds fascinating 3y
Cinfhen There‘s a lot of information being shared @Librarybelle but not much yet about her life as a doctor. Still it‘s a very interesting look into the lives of Saudi women (edited) 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Curious for your final review—I bought this ages ago but still haven‘t read it! 3y

A great feminist utopian short story set in India. I found this gem on #SerialReader

For reading some of the early “feminist” stories from women of European heritage, I found this short story written in 1905 by a Muslim woman reversing the gender roles very interesting.

* Recommended if you enjoyed Angel Island by Inez Haynes Irwin or Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds interesting! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage It was, and only 2 issues. 5y

Bookwomble It's also collected in the tagged book, an anthology of Victorian/Edwardian sci-fi stories by women authors. I'd recommended it and it's companion volumes, The Darker Sex (horror/macabre), and Sisters in Crime (detective). 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookwomble That sounds excellent! I‘ll definitely look for it! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I bet @BarbaraTheBibliophage would be interested in that book to. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookwomble I‘m definitely interesting in finding more from other POV‘s. This one and Woman at Point Zero are two that I‘ve stumbled across so far. Both polar opposites too, but great women fiction. 5y
